The Dent County Commissioner held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 516, 517, 622, 623, 630B, and 673, and gravel would be hauled to the crusher. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done in the Lecoma area on Dent County Roads 202, 202A and 203. Tune also said that grading would be done in the Boss area on Dent County Roads 533, 533A and 534, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 214. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Susan Cunningham of Spatial Data Research would be here on Monday to update the Commission on Rural Addressing, and if anyone has questions about rural addressing, they can call the toll free number 1-877-784-5075 and a representative from Spatial Data Research will answer their question. Skiles also wanted to remind everyone of the Animal Agriculture Emergency Planning and Response Meeting that will be Tuesday night at the Commons starting at 6:00 pm. To make your reservation, call the Dent County Extension Office at 729-3196. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that all voter registration cards have been mailed out. If you did not receive one, you need to contact the clerks office at 729-4144. Curley also said that the last day to register to vote for the 2008 February Primary Election is January 9
th. Commissioner Simpson also wanted to report that District 1 crew members would be doing inventory on road signs, because new ones will be put up after the rural addressing is complete. The Commission agreed that the new signs will have the initial DC for Dent County and then be followed by a four-digit road number. At the previous meeting, Dent County Prosecuting Attorney Jessica Sparks came by to discuss her budget for the remainder of this year and the projected 2008 year. She inquired about transferring money from one line item to another for salary. The County Clerk and Commission both agreed that there was no need, due to the fact that she had not exceeded that particular line item. The Commission also stated that Sparks can no longer use her part-time help effective December 1
st, due to funding problems. The next meeting if the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
An accident occurred Wednesday afternoon at 3:53 in Phelps County on Phelps County Road #2170, at the north outer service road. According to the highway patrol report, a 1991 Ford Ranger, driven by 54-year old Clay Hahn of St. James, was traveling southbound when he lost control of the vehicle as he was approaching the intersection of Phelps County Road 2170 and the north outer road. The vehicle traveled through the intersection and struck an embankment. The vehicle then traveled onto I-44 and then back toward the outer road, crossed the outer road and traveled off the road and into a field. Hahn suffered serious injuries in the accident and was transported by Phelps County ambulance to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The vehicle had minor damage and was left at the scene..
A Dent County native is being honored in the 2007-2008 Edition of the Missouri Official Manual or “Blue Book”. Charles Elliot Gill, a photographer of the early 20th century who documented life in the Ozarks, will be the subject of an article in the book. Selections of his collection will also be included as a feature. Gill lived in the 16th Senatorial District until his death in 1962. His son, Salem resident Ed Gill, has donated his father’s collection, consisting of 722 glass plate negatives and some original prints, to the Missouri State Archives. Gill’s collection highlights life in the Ozarks from the Industrial Revolution through early Modern America, spanning the 1890’s through the 1930’s.
The Bonebrake Center will also be hosting their 15th annual “Cookie Walk’ from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Everyone is invited to come and fill your basket with a variety of homemade cookies. Delivery is also possible if you are unable to come out Sunday. For more information contact the Center at 729-3400. The City of Salem girls and boys basketball sign-ups will be held this afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Salem TCRC. These sign-ups are for boys and girls, in 1st through 6th grades. Sign-ups will also be held on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and on December 13th and 14th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There is a fee of $15 per child. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers defeated the Lady Bears of Ava in the Cabool Tournament semi-final by the score of 44-39. Salem was led by Natalie Howard with 19 points followed by Hannah Kettner with nine points. Salem improves to 3-0 on the year with the win which puts them in the tournament championship game Saturday night at 7:00 at Cabool.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will travel to Owensville tonight to face the Dutchmen. The 9th graders will start things out at 5:00 followed by the JV at about 6:25 and the varsity contest at about 7:45. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio. Salem enters the game with a 4-1 record.
Andy Flett of the Salem Tigers Football Team was named to the All State- Class 3 Missouri Football Coaches Association 3rd Team. Seven Salem Tigers were also named to the Class District 9 team and they included Flett, C.J. Smith, Jordan Thompson, Brady Adams, Landie Oliver, Max Ball and Vincent Jackson. Congratulations Tigers!
The Missouri Tiger Basketball team will host Purdue tomorrow at 2:30. Missouri enters the game with a 5-3 record. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
The St. Louis Blues will travel to Edmonton to face the Oilers tonight starting at 8:00. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem Tiger Basketball. The Blues will also travel to Colorado to face the Avalanche on Sunday at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Missouri Quarterback Chase Daniels is one of four finalists for the Heisman Trophy for the best college player in the nation this year. That announcement will be made Saturday night.
