The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Parade of Lights will be held Saturday starting at 5:30 from the near the old fairgrounds at Grand and Franklin to the Dent County Courthouse. A total of 38 entries will be in this year’s parade. To provide a safe environment along the parade route, the Salem Police will be closing off 4th Street from McArthur to Iron Street at 1:00 to prevent any parking on 4th Street. For all parade events, whether you are a spectator or participant, you must use own judgment as to your own safety regardless of whether or not the parade is cancelled. Every effort will be made to hold the event, as temperature will not stop the parade. Cancellation is at the sole discretion of the Salem Area of Commerce Board of Directors. If the parade is cancelled, the chamber will make the announcement by 3:00 Saturday on KSMO Radio, at ksmoradio.com and on the KSMO Radio Facebook page. 

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Due to illness, Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was unable to attend. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley appointed Gary Larson as acting Presiding Commissioner. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that the Road and Bridge Department was prepared for the upcoming storm and ready to apply sand or salt and plow snow as needed. Purcell encouraged folks to stay at home until the road conditions improve. He went on to remind people of the upcoming meeting with the Park Service personnel on Wednesday December the 11th at the Salem City Hall from 10:00 until noon.  Purcell reminded citizens to attend and let their feelings be known about the Park Service Management Plan proposals. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson echoed Purcell’s remarks about preparedness for the storm. He went on to note that on Tuesday he attended the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District Annual Awards Banquet. At the banquet it was noted that the District would be re-doing the waste plan with a total cost of $21,000 and a cost to the district of $6,000, part of which would be covered by a USDA Grant. Larson went on to say that Wednesday he attended the Salem Area Community Betterment Association Recognition Banquet  saluting the city of Salem for winning the Gene Speichinger Community of the Year Award over 28 other communities. Executive Director Jan Simon from MCB presented SACBA with a new metal road sign honoring them as the 2013 grand prize winner during the presentation at the Ozarks Natural and Cultural Resource Center. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported the results of the Courthouse propane phone bids. Two of the four local vendors responded with MFA Oil’s low bid of $1.69 being accepted, while the Ferrell Gas bid was $2.09. On Tuesday Curley attended the South Central County Clerks Meeting at the Houston Justice Center. Numerous topics were addressed and two election vendors demonstrated their new equipment. Curley went on to say that she balanced with the Collectors’ and Assessors’ November collections, abatements and add-ons. She also presented the Salem TCRC report from the Dent County Rural Addressing. In 2012 there were 555 phone calls, 197 walk-ins, and 261 miles were driven.  To date for 2013 there have been 296 phone calls, 190 walk-ins, and 410 miles have been driven. Rick LaBrash was by representing the Sons of the American Legion to share information about the Missouri Veterans Home Assistance League Adopt a Vet Program.  LaBrash stated that the program cost is $50 per veteran and that people can drop off donations at the post or contact him at 573-729-1394.  he deadline to donate is Friday, December 13th.  The Commissioners then voted to pay the bills. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners is Monday at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Tiger basketball game with Sullivan Thursday was postponed due to the weather and no make up date has yet been set.

The Lady Tigers will begin the Cabool Tournament on Monday, December 9th as the third seed. The Lady Tigers will face the 6th seeded Ava Lady Bears at 8:30 PM in Cabool. With a win Salem will play the winner of second seeded Mountain Grove Lady Panthers and the 7th seeded Willow Springs Lady Bears on Tuesday, December 10th at 7:30. An opening round loss will mean a game against the loser of that game on Thursday, December 12th at 7:30.

The Salem Tiger boys basketball team will host Pacific tonight in their first home game of the year, weather permitting. Salem is 1-0 on the year and JV will start things off at 6:00 with the varsity to follow. If played, you’ll be able to hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio 1340 AM and online at ksmoradio.com.

Jordan Clarkson finished with 25 points to lead the Missouri Tigers over the West Virginia Mountaineers, 80-71, at Mizzou Arena as part of the inaugural Big 12/SEC Challenge. Missouri will host 18th ranked UCLA Saturday and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 11:00 in the morning.

Jay Bouwmeester had one goal and one assist to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 5-1 win over the New York Islanders. Derek Roy, David Backes, Magnus Paajarvi and Brenden Morrow also scored. The Blues will play the Anaheim Ducks Saturday and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:30.

The Missouri Football Tigers will face Auburn Saturday afternoon for the SEC Championship game in Atlanta. Kickoff time is set for 3:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio with the pre-game show beginning at 2:00.

The St. Louis Rams will be in Arizona to face the Cardinals Sunday afternoon at 3:25. The Kansas City Chiefs will be in Washington to play the Redskins on Sunday at noon. The Rams are 5-7 on the year and the Chiefs are 9-3.

The Kansas City Royals acquired outfielder Norichika Aoki from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for left- handed pitcher Will Smith on Thursday. Aoki, 31, batted .286 with eight home runs, 37 RBI and 20 stolen bases for Milwaukee in 2013. He ranked second in the majors with 40 infield hits and led the NL in singles.

Funeral services for Randy Dean Asher of Cherryville, age 54, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 today.

Funeral services for Floyd (Kenneth) Hudgens of Rolla, age 87, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Garden. Memorials are suggested to the Vichy Campground Church of God or Newburg Church of God.

Funeral services for Lou Helen Givens of Salem, age 85, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday night from 5:00 until 7:00. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Crawford County. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Funeral services for Mary E. Simpson of Salem, age 85, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Jadwin Cemetery.

Funeral services for Dorleska Johns of Salem, age 95, will be Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mildred M. "Millie" Thompson of Ballwin, MO, age 83, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 in the morning until service time on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Miner Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Funeral services for Kelly Pryor of Boss, age 53, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00 until 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem and from 11:00 until service time at the church. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
