On Tuesday, December 4th at 8:57 pm, deputies with the Dent County Sheriff’s Office, the Salem Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and South Central Drug Task force executed a search warrant at 3000 block of North Highway 68 in Dent County. The search warrant was for methamphetamine, chemicals, and paraphernalia used in the production in methamphetamine. A search of the residence revealed a plastic corner baggie with a white crystalline substance. The crystalline substance and the spoon were later field-tested and were positive for methamphetamine. A search of a black Chevrolet truck that attempted to flee from the scene revealed a glass jar with a clear chemical liquid. The jar was sealed with a plastic baggie, and electrical tape. The liquid was field tested for methamphetamine. The liquid inside the jar also field-tested positive for methamphetamine. The liquid meth inside the jar weighs in excess of 90 grams. Arrested and held in the Dent County Jail on a 24-hour hold were: 34-year old Keith W. Griffin and 29-year old Shenna L. Henry of Salem. Both were held for a Class A Felony of trafficking in the 1st degree in a motor vehicle and a Class D Felony of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. Also arrested and held in the Dent County Jail on a 24-hour hold was 29-year old Roni R. Smith of Salem. Smith was held for two Class C Felony of possession of a controlled substance and one Class D Felony of tampering with evidence.
Hunters checked 15,136 deer during Missouri’s antler less deer season November 21st through December 2nd. This year’s antler less harvest increased by 697 deer, a gain of 5% over last year. Top harvest counties for the 12-day antler less season were Camden with 553 deer checked, Benton with 518, and Callaway with 491. Two portions of Missouri’s firearms deer season remain. The alternative-methods portion runs from December 15th through December 25th, and the late youth portion is December 29th and 30th. Besides increasing hunting opportunities, the antler less season gives hunters and landowners a way of regulating local deer numbers. Those who want more deer can choose not to participate in the antler less season, while those who want fewer deer can use the season to remove female deer from the population. Missouri’s annual harvest of approximately 300,000 deer by firearms and archery hunters yields more than 10 million pounds of venison. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission will improve two roadways in Crawford and Dent counties next year following the award of a contract at its December 5
th meeting. Rolla Asphalt, LLC of Rolla, was awarded a contract to resurface 23.5 miles of Route 19 between Cherryville and Salem in Crawford and Dent counties. Under the same project, nearly 11 miles of Route 32 between the Salem city limits and Route 72 in Dent County will be resurfaced. The project also includes constructing two-foot-wide shoulders along the resurfaced areas. The low bid for the work was $3.7 million. The construction will take place in 2013. The St. Louis Cardinals made their first major move of the offseason on Wednesday, agreeing to terms with veteran relief pitcher Randy Choate on a three-year contract. Choate has been one of the game's more effective lefty specialists during his 12-year big league career, having held left-handed hitters to a .201 average over that time. The 37-year-old limited southpaws to a mere .158 average over a combined 80 games last season, which he split between the Miami Marlins and L.A. Dodgers. The journeyman hurler also posted a 3.03 earned run average in 2012 and owns an 11-11 record with a 4.02 ERA over 476 lifetime appearances, all of which have come in relief.
Kansas City slugger Billy Butler has been selected as the winner of the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter award. In balloting among club beat writers, broadcasters and American League public relations departments, Butler received 80 first-place votes out of a possible 84 to beat Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion. Butler batted .313 with 32 doubles, 29 home runs, 107 RBI and 72 runs scored in 161 games for the Royals this past season. Butler becomes the second Royals player to be named the league's top DH, joining three-time winner Hal McCrae, who won the award in 1976, 1980, and 1982.
David Yost has resigned his position as University of Missouri assistant head football coach, after spending the past 12 seasons on Head Coach Gary Pinkel's staff at Mizzou. Yost cited personal reasons for his decision, which is effective immediately. The departure will end a 17-season association between Pinkel and Yost. He joined Pinkel's staff at Toledo in 1996, and from 1997-2000, was Pinkel's quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator.
