As the state of Missouri is a leading agricultural producer and an important link in the nation’s food supply chain, the Missouri Department of Agriculture (MDA) is taking steps to help farmers and ranchers prepare for potential agricultural emergencies, including livestock disease outbreak. The MDA is pleased to announce that it will be holding Animal Agriculture Emergency Planning & Response meetings across the state. The MDA, working with Emergency Management Agencies, University of Missouri Extension and trade groups, will be holding meetings to discuss proactive planning, roles and responsibilities and impact related to a livestock outbreak or other agricultural emergencies. A meeting in Dent County is scheduled for Tuesday, December 11
th from 6:00 to 8:30 at The Commons. A meal will be served at the meeting and RSVP’s are appreciated. To RSVP call 1-800-897-1163, EXT 35 or call the Dent County Extension Office in Salem at 729-3196. All livestock producers and others involved with Missouri agriculture are welcome to attend.
Senator Frank Barnitz announced that the Department of Economic Development has approved a project in the 16th District. Rightway Remanufacturing, LLC in Salem has been approved for $56,657 in Enhanced Enterprise Zone Tax Credits. Rightway Remanufacturing will use the credit for a new manufacturing facility that will help with the creation of 25 new jobs for residents in Salem and surrounding communities. The new facility will require an investment of $500,000. Enhanced Enterprise Zones are specified geographic areas designated by local governments and certified by the Department of Economic Development. Zone designation is based on certain demographic criteria, the potential to create sustainable jobs in a targeted industry, and a demonstrated impact on local industry cluster development.
An accident occurred Monday morning at 10:23 on Highway 32 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a red 2005 Hyundai Elantra driven by David Paul of Salem was traveling westbound on Highway 32. Paul failed to observe a red 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 driven by Jeffery Kirker of Salem which was also westbound on Highway 32 approaching Jennifer Street, was slowing to stop when contact was made with the Dodge. No injuries were reported. The Hyundai sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The Dodge sustained moderate damage.
The Northwood R-IV and Oak Hill R-I, Parents as Teachers programs are having their Christmas get-together this evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Northwood Early Childhood Center. Santa will be there, so don’t forget your camera! They will be making Christmas ornaments, and decorating sugar cookies. The Spring Creek Artisans will hold their Christmas Fest this Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 and Saturday from 8:00 to 1:00 at the Bonebrake Center of nature and History in Salem. As an added attraction this Saturday, Santa Claus will be present Saturday morning for the children at the Christmas Fest. “Sometimes Tuesday” will perform Christmas music Friday night on the dulcimer.

The City of Salem girls and boys basketball sign-ups will be held this afternoon and tomorrow from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Salem TCRC. These sign-ups are for boys and girls, in 1st through 6th grades. Sign-ups will also be held on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and on December 13th and 14th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There is a fee of $15 per child. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will travel to Cabool to face the Ava Lady Bears in the semi-finals of the Cabool Tournament tonight starting at 7:30. The winner will play in the championship game Saturday at 7:00 and the loser will play in the third place game on Saturday at 5:30.
The St. Louis Cardinals released outfielder So Taguchi on Wednesday. With Major League Baseball's Rule 5 draft slated to take place on Thursday, the Cardinals' 40-man roster now stands at 39. The Cardinals declined Taguchi’s option for next season but had the chance to go to arbitration with him. However, Taguchi’s agent requested his client's release earlier in the week. Taguchi appeared in 130 games this season for the Cardinals and hit .290 mostly in a reserve role, while scoring 46 runs and knocking in 30. He also belted three home runs. The 38-year-old native of Japan has spent his entire six-year major league career with the Cardinals. His best year came in 2005 when he batted .288 and set career-highs with eight home runs and 53 RBI.
Outfielder Jose Guillen, who Kansas City just signed to a three-year deal, may face a suspension from Major League Baseball for his alleged involvement in the purchase of steroids and human growth hormone. Guillen, who according to ESPN.com could be facing between a 10 and 15 game ban, appeared in headlines in early November following a report in the San Francisco Chronicle that said he purchased steroids and human growth hormone from a Florida anti-aging clinic. The deal is expected to be finalized once Guillen passes a physical.
St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger, still recovering from a concussion, passed a neuropsych exam and was cleared for practice Wednesday, meaning he will likely be available for the Rams' game Sunday with the Cincinnati Bengals

Funeral services for Eugene H. Hornberger Jr. of Rolla, age 66, will be held today at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Philadelphia Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Deck Hall of Salem will be held today at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Anutt Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Young Community Building.
Funeral services for Clifford Leo Wilkins of Bixby, age 81, will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. this evening at the Chapel.
Funeral services Nelda Marie Pyatt of Steelville, age 83, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in Martin Cemetery in Cherryville.
Funeral services for Merle Frank Gifford of Rolla, formerly of Pennsylvania, age 97, are undetermined at this time but under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Fort Palmer Cemetery in New Florence, PA.
Funeral services for Brenda Faye Welker of Rolla, age 48, are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
