The Missouri Department of Transportation public meeting tonight concerning the work on Route J in Salem and Dent County in 2014 has been postponed. The public meeting will now be held on Tuesday, December 10^th from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Salem High School Cafeteria at 1400 Tiger Pride Drive. The project is scheduled to begin in 2014. No formal presentation will be made but the public may speak with staff from MoDOT and provide their input any time between 4:00 and 6:00. Displays and project information presented at the meeting will be available at www.modot.org/central on Wednesday. The meeting facility is accessible to people with disabilities. Due to the expected inclement weather today, the Salem R-80 School District and the rural schools will dismiss early. Students at the Lower Elementary and rural school will dismiss students at 11:55, the Upper Elementary will dismiss students at 12:05 and the High School students will be dismissed at 12:12. 

A ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the Route V improvement project in Phelps County will be held this morning at 9:30 in the parking lot of the old Briggs and Stratton Building, 3701 Hypoint Boulevard, Rolla. The public is invited to attend the ceremony. The $477,877 project included adding five turn lanes to the Route V interchange at Interstate 44, as well as installing new signals at the interchange. The additional lanes and signals will improve traffic flow in the area. The project was funded through a cost-sharing agreement between the Missouri Department of Transportation and the City of Rolla. Lamke Trenching and Excavating, Inc. of Marthasville, Mo., was the contractor on the project. Three Rivers Hospice will be sponsoring the Tuesday, December 10th Salem Area Chamber of Commerce members’ luncheon meeting at the Southwest Baptist University Salem Campus at 501 South Grand. There is no cost for lunch, but please RSVP by Friday, December 6^th, to chamber@salemmo.com or call 729-6900.  The program will discuss how hospice relates to the family and the patient.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded several mid-Missouri transportation improvement projects on Tuesday. Rolla Asphalt, LLC had the low bid of $1,399,574 for resurfacing more than 14 miles of Route 72 between Rolla and Salem, which will take place during the 2014 construction season. 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports eight people died during this year’s Thanksgiving holiday counting period ran from 6:00 pm Wednesday, November 27^th through 11:59 pm Sunday, December 1^st. Troopers investigated 299 traffic crashes, which included 140 injuries. In addition, troopers arrested 139 people for driving while intoxicated. The Highway Patrol investigated seven of the fatalities. The St. Louis Police Department investigated the remaining fatality. During the 2012 Thanksgiving holiday, troopers investigated 350 traffic crashes, which included 140 injuries. There were six fatalities over the 2012 Thanksgiving weekend. Troopers arrested 140 people for driving while intoxicated that same weekend in 2012. Five of the fatalities occurred in the Troop F, Jefferson City area. One fatality occurred in the Troop C, Weldon Spring area, Troop G, Willow Springs area, and Troop I, Rolla area. There were no boating incidents, boating while intoxicated arrests, or drownings reported during the 2013 Thanksgiving holiday counting period. Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announced that during the month of December, officers assigned to Troop I will be involved in two special enforcement operations. These include a sobriety checkpoint in Laclede County and DWI saturation in Crawford County. Officers will also be participating in the statewide 2013 Holiday DWI Enforcement Campaign in an effort to stop people from driving while impaired this holiday season. The Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.

Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings is pleased to announce the award of an additional grant to support the South Central Missouri Computer Crime Task Force. The Sheriff’s Office was awarded $39,749.12 from the State Cyber Crime Grant (SCCG) program through the Missouri Department of Public Safety. This grant, which is retroactive from June 1, 2013 and runs through May 31, 2014, will fund the salary of a Special Investigator located at the digital forensic lab in Salem. Dent County is the recipient of the grant and administers it for the task force agencies. The South Central Missouri Computer Crime Task Force provides investigations, technical support, computer forensic examinations, officer training in identifying and seizing electronic evidence, and Internet Safety presentations to schools in the region. The South Central Missouri Computer Crime Task Force is comprised of investigators from various agencies and provides services to Dent, Pulaski, Phelps, Crawford, Iron, Reynolds, Shannon, Texas, and Washington Counties. The Task Force provides expertise to assist law enforcement in South Central Missouri in the investigation and prosecution of cases where digital evidence may be involved, particularly crimes against children.

For the first time in its 50 years of operation, The Doe Run Company’s (Doe Run) Southeast Missouri Mining & Milling Division (SEMO) in Viburnum, Mo., reached three million safe work hours without a lost-time injury on October 27^th this year. Prior to this accomplishment, SEMO’s highest achievement on record was 1.25 million safe hours. More than 870 people work within SEMO’s six mines and four mills in Missouri.
