During the evening of December 2nd, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Matt Pappert discovered the body of a Salem man that had suffered a gunshot wound at a residence off Dent County Road 230. Dent County Coroner Eddie Wilson pronounced 21-year old Jacob Shea Cummings dead at 8:55 that evening from the result of an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound at the residence.
According to the Coroner’s report, the gunshot residue will be sent to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The body was taken from the scene by the coroner and later released to the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
An accident occurred Monday afternoon at 1:45 in Dent County on Highway 72 at Lake Spring. According to the highway patrol report, a 1991 Ford pickup driven by 62-year old James Tucker of Bunker was traveling westbound on Highway 72. Tucker met an oncoming tractor-trailer unit and a large piece of ice fell from the tractor-trailer unit and penetrated the windshield of the pickup causing head injuries to Tucker. The unidentified tractor-trailer unit then continued east on Highway 72 from the accident and did not stop. Tucker suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem Ambulance. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford pickup sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Knight Towing of Salem.
The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the Salem TCRC Monday evening. Alderman Jim McDaniels was not present as he had a doctor’s appointment in Springfield. Under bids, none were available as the city is waiting on Sho-Me Power to give them the specs they need for the laptop to be used to run diagnostics. The items will be heard at the next meeting. After the consent agenda that showed a decrease in the sales tax revenues for the city for the month of October compared to last year, the board did not hear from the Planning and Zoning Board as they did not have a quorum to hold a meeting. They will try to meet before the next board meeting on December 18th. Alderman Mike Whitley reported that he received a lot of good comments on how fast the city cleared off many of the streets, especially the main routes. City of Salem Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs reminds everyone to get their community wide assessment survey completed and turned in by December 8th. Mayor Gary Brown reported that there were 87 electric cutoffs at the end of November for non-payment, but all were back on when the cold weather hit. He said that city received a Local Law Enforcement Block Grant in the amount of $4,770 and Chief Clifford Jadwin said that money would go toward a new camera for a patrol car. Brown also reported that the handicapped access to the ball fields was completed as required for the grant at the city park, and they need to get a picture sent off to DNR. Brown also reported that he spoke with Doug Stump about traffic count locations and they will set that up sometime in 2007. The board then postponed any decision on Bill #3088 that vacates and undeveloped portion of Beezley Street until they have a full board. After approving the bills, the board went into closed session where they discussed real estate, but no decisions were made. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Lady Tigers destroyed Cabool last night in the Lady Bulldog Classic by the score of 61 to 12. Salem was led by Kirsten Stephens with 17 points followed by Natalie Howard with 14. Allison Jones and Hannah Kettner contributed 11 points each as Salem is now 3-0 and they will face Mountain Grove Thursday night at 6:00 in the semi-final game.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will be on the road as they will be at Waynesville tonight to face the Tigers. Salem is 1-1 on the season. JV action will start things out at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. You can hear the varsity contest on KSMO Radio.
The St. Louis Blues will face the Detroit Red Wings tonight at 7:00 at the Scottrade Center and tonight they will retire Brett Hull’s Jersey with #16 to the rafters. KSMO will air the beginning of the game tonight at 7:00, and air the conclusion of the game after Salem Tiger basketball.
The Missouri Tigers have accepted the invitation to go to the Sun Bowl to face Oregon State on December 29th. Missouri goes into the game with an 8-4 record and Oregon State enters the contest with a 9-4 record. KSMO will air the game on the 29th.
St. Louis Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter has signed a five-year contract extension and will keep him with the club through the 2011 season. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal includes a club option for 2012. Carpenter won the Cy Young Award in 2005 as the National League's top pitcher and last year finished third in the voting while helping the Cardinals win the World Series title. Carpenter owns a record of 51-18 with a 3.10 earned run average in three seasons with the Cardinals. He was 15-8 with a 3.09 ERA during the 2006 season and combined for a mark of 3-1 with a 2.78 ERA in five postseason starts.
The St. Louis Cardinals will face the Cleveland Indians in the first-ever Civil Rights Game, Major League Baseball announced at its Winter Meetings on Monday. The inaugural contest is scheduled for March 31, 2007 at AutoZone Park in Memphis, home of the Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate. Memphis was chosen because the National Civil Rights Museum, built on the site where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, is in close proximity to the park.

Graveside services for Chance J. Ilges of St. James, age two months, will be held Wednesday morning at 9:00 at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery in Rosati. Memorials may be made to the Chance Ilges family.
Funeral services for Belva “Belle” Lewis of Steelville, age 85, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be this evening from 4:30 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
A memorial services for Jacob Shea Cummings of Salem, age 21, will be held Wednesday night at 8:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. A memorial tribute will be held from 6:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Jacob Cummings family.
A private interment will be held at a later date for Jacqueline A. Hampton of Salem, age 64. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Dry Fork Management in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
Memorial services for W. Ray Vickery of Salem, age 67, will be held Monday, December 11th at noon at the Salem United Methodist Church. Interment will be held in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Museum or Dent County Animal Shelter. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
