The Salem High School National Honor Society will be hosting the 2013 Dent County Toy Drive. The mission for this project is to provide gifts for needy children in Dent County. They are now collecting toys from everyone who would like to donate through December 18th at the Salem High School, the Dent County Fire Station, the Salem Police Department, the KSMO front lobby and Dollar General. Please make sure all toys are either new or just slightly used. If donating used toys, please make sure the items are clean and in good working order. Those parents wishing to register their children to receive toys this Christmas need at be at the Dent County Fire Department today from 3:30 to 6:30 or Wednesday, December 11th from 3:30 to 6:30 pm. Eligible parents will be able to pick up the toys for their children on Friday, December 20th from 9:00 am to 6:00. Those families that will be receiving toys will be asked to schedule a time they would like to pickup the toys at registration. To be eligible, parents must bring proof of residency (such as an electric bill or postmarked mail); proof of children in the home (such as a tax return, Division of Family Services printout, or a letter from school); and proof of their children’s date of birth (such as a birth certificate or a DFS printout). The Salem Police Department has released several reports. On Monday, November 18th at 5:45 in the evening, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1000 block of South Pershing in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered the residence by force and took items valued at $360 and caused about $50 in property damage. On Wednesday, November 20th at 9:12 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of South Carty in reference to a stolen vehicle. That investigation revealed that someone took a black 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe, valued at $10,000, parked near the owner’s residence. Later that afternoon at 1:00, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Third in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that someone entered a vacant residence and damaged the property inside. The value of the damage is undetermined at this time. A little later that afternoon at 2:00, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a series of forgeries. The investigation revealed that a 25-year old of Salem had stolen numerous checks and forged them, amounting to $1,232.01. Later that evening at 9:07, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 39-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $187.83. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was also found to have an active fugitive warrant from Maries County. He was then incarcerated pending extradition. On Thursday, November 21st at 7:19 in the evening, an officer was detailed to a traffic accident at Walmart. The investigation led to the arrest of 41-year old Salem female on an active fugitive warrant from Wright County. She was given a new court date and released after posting bond. On Saturday, November 23rd at 11:07 at night, an officer transported a 35-year old Salem female to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla in lieu of a mental commitment order. With the first wintry weather expected to arrive, here is a list of streets within the city designated as emergency “snow routes” that will be cleared of snow, ice or other debris: Third Street west from Highway 19 to Dilworth Lane, and Third Street east from Pershing Avenue to Iron Mountain Road; Fourth Street from Pershing Avenue to McArthur Avenue; Sixth Street (Rolla Road) from McArthur Avenue to Pershing Avenue; Jackson Street north from Sixth Street (Rolla Road) to the dead end; Tenth Street from Highway 19 to Walnut Hill Drive;  Pershing Avenue from Tenth Street to Highway 32/72; Center Street from Highway 19 to Craig Industrial Drive; Carty Street from Highway 32/72 to Center Street; Craig Industrial Drive from Highway 32/72 to Iron Mountain Road; Babb Lane from Highway 32/72 to Roosevelt Street; Doss Road south from Highway 32/72 to the city limits; Roosevelt Street east from Highway 19 to Babb Lane and west from Highway 19 to Wines Street; Wines Street from Roosevelt Street to Highway 32/72; Missouri Avenue from Highway 32/72 to Third Street; Park Street from Highway 32/72 to Sixth Street (Rolla Road); Franklin Street west from McArthur Avenue to Highway 72 and east from Highway 19 to Pershing Avenue; Dilworth Lane from Route J to Highway 32 West; and Center Street west from Missouri Avenue to Dilworth Lane. Remember to remove your vehicle from these routes when an accumulation of ice and snow is expected so that the route can be cleared or it could be towed at your expense, or you could be sited for a parking violation.

The Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters in the Central Region have selected their All-District Teams for football. Making the All-District 1st team from the Salem Tigers are running back junior Zane Kyzer who rushed for 1,432 yards and 17 touchdowns, and senior lineman Cordell Tatom. Named to the All-District 2nd Team was Defensive Back Eli Floyd who had seven interceptions on the year including returning one for a touchdown. Congratulations to these players on an outstanding season!!!

The St. Louis Cardinals failed to offer pitcher John Axford a contract by midnight Monday allowing him to become a free agent. Axford, the former closer for the Milwaukee Brewers, was acquired by St. Louis in August.

The Kansas City Royals announced on Monday that they would not tender a contract to infielder Chris Getz. In 449 career games with the White Sox and Royals, Getz has hit .251 with three home runs and 111 RBI.

Funeral services for Inez Saladin of St. James, age 97, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Virginia (Bray) Karr of Rolla, age 94, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Garden. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps Regional Hospice.

Marcus G. Flatt of Salem, age 91, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Mt. Herman Cemetery.

Funeral services for Randy Dean Asher of Cherryville, age 54, will be held Saturday morning at 1100 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 Friday.

Funeral services for Floyd (Kenneth) Hudgens of Rolla, age 87, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Garden. Memorials are suggested to the Vichy Campground Church of God or Newburg Church of God.
