The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the Salem TCRC. Alderman Jim McDaniels was not present due to illness. At the meeting, the board approved the high bids on four Crown Victoria Police Cars and one Jeep. Welcome Motors from Chicago had the high bid on the 1999 Crown Vic of $888 and the high bid on the Jeep at $2,888. Grace Quality Used Cars from Morrisville, PA was the high bidder on the three 2002 Crown Vics at $2,656, $2,556 and $2,256 respectively. The city netted $11,244 from the sealed bids. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs discussed the new website and showed the alderman the new prototype. Mayor Gray Brown will be meeting with City Attorney Mark Weaver to go over a proposal by Archer Engineering for the soccer field layout today. He also said that on December 12
th at the Holiday Inn, a number of city employees would be attending a Bridge Maintenance and Replacement Training in preparation to replace the bridge on Second Street. He also reported that the surplus city equipment auction held Saturday netted the city $11,558.00. He said that he wanted to appoint the new airport board, but will wait until Alderman McDaniels is present at the next meeting. The board then voted to vacate the undeveloped alley in Block “A” of Grover’s Addition by a 3-0 vote. City Clerk Mary Happel discussed with the aldermen that they may want to consider an ordinance that deals with cell phone and Internet harassment as many cities are doing so. The board agreed and City Attorney Mark Weaver will draw up a proposed ordinance for the next meeting. The board also reviewed the user fees for the city hall and the Salem Freedom Activity Center and agreed to create set fees for usage. The fees will be based on hours used and the proposed rate is $125 for one to four hours, $175 for over four hours to ten hours, and $300 for over 10 hours up to 24 hours. This fee includes the maintenance costs. Another ordinance will be drawn up for the next meeting for the board to review on the fees. After paying the bills, the board adjourned.
The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 409, 415, 552A, 625A, 635 and 649. The rest of the District 1 crew members would be patching chip and seal on various roads throughout the district. Simpson also reported that he attended the Montauk Fire Station Open House on Sunday; he said the fire station has been expanded and updated, and looks very nice. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 236, 440 and 526 and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 213A and 214. Tune also said that two crew members would be taking a dump truck to Jefferson City for repairs. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles received a letter from Ramaker & Associates; who are contract engineers for Crossroads Wireless, and were wondering what planning and zoning permits they needed before they started construction on a cell phone tower. No permits will be needed because Dent County does not require any. Skiles wanted to remind everyone that the deadline to apply for a Delta Regional Authority Grant, which is used for public and transportation infrastructure, is January 8th. Skiles also reported that the counties sales tax revenue is down $13,000 from this time last year. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that voter registration cards will be sent out at the end of this week and if you have had an address change, please notify the clerks office. At 11:00 the Commission went into closed session to continue the discussion from Thursdays closed session of real estate issues. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The weather was windy and a bit cool but other than that, not bad this year for the 2007 Christmas parade entitled, “It’s A Wonderful Life” that was held Saturday night in downtown Salem. Winners for the 2007 Christmas parade in the commercial category were in 1st place, Progressive Ozark with their float and 2nd place went to Larson Collision Center. In the non-commercial category the 1st place winner was the Girl Scout float and 2nd place went to Wes and Mary Pfeifer. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all those who helped out and participated in the parade this year, as well as those who came out for the parade.
The Salvation Army Dent County Service Unit would like to announce a change in their Red Christmas Kettle locations. The corporate headquarters of Dollar General Stores will no longer allow the familiar red kettle to be placed at their locations. Salvation Army Chairman, Jim Boulware, would like to thank the local manager, Sandy Stoner, and staff for always being willing to help with the kettle campaign. Boulware stated that with the loss of such a busy kettle location, the need for the continued generosity of the Dent County citizens is greater this year than ever before. He also requests that the local citizens continue to support the annual toy drive that the local Dollar General store conducts for needy children in our community. Volunteer bell ringers will continue to be seen at Country Mart and Wal-Mart until December 24th. Natalie Howard scored 23 points and Allison Jones added nine more as the Salem Lady Tigers slipped past Bradleyville last night in Cabool, 49-41. Salem is 2-0 on the year and they will face Ava Thursday night at 7:30.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will host the Waynesville Tigers tonight at the Salem High School Gym. Salem comes into the game with a 4-0 record. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO starting at about 7:15 with Tiger Talk and Coach Travis Wrightsman.
The St. Louis Blues will be in Calgary tonight starting at 8:00. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem Basketball. The Blues have won four of their last five games.

Funeral services for Ronald R. Cox of Lecoma, age 68, will be Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Null & Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Mt. Herman in Rural Dent County. Memorials are suggested to the St. Robert Church of God, building fund.
A celebration of life for Benjamin Franklin Jurjens of Salem, formerly of Montello, Nebraska, age 97, will be Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Salem United Methodist Church or VFW Post 99.
Funeral services for Eugene H Hornberger Jr. of Rolla, age 66, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Philadelphia Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Deck Hall of Salem, are incomplete at this time, but under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services for Brenda Faye Welker of Rolla, age 48, are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Merle Frank Gifford of Rolla, formerly of Pennsylvania, age 97, are undetermined at this time but under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Fort Palmer Cemetery in New Florence, PA. Memorials are suggested to the Great Commission Fund of the Christian Missionary Alliance.
