The Salem Boys Basketball Varsity Tigers opened their season Saturday afternoon with a 77-59 win over Northwest High School at Rolla. Leading 33-28 at halftime, the Tigers pulled away led by Cody Whitaker with 34 points and Marshall Cramer added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Salem will host Pacific this Friday night starting with the JV contest at 6:00 followed by the varsity game at about 7:30. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio.
The Salem Varsity Lady Basketball Tigers lost their opening game against Northwest High School Saturday by the score of 65-61 in overtime. Salem trailed 15-5 after the 1st quarter, but battled back and tied the game with just seconds left to force overtime with the score tied at 50-50. Fouls and injuries forced the Lady Tigers to play with four girls in the overtime period and they were outscored 15-5 in the extra session. Salem was led in scoring by Cortney Putman who finished with 12 points followed by Peyton Curley who netted 11 points and Kari Hatridge who added 10 more. The Lady Tigers will open their home season Thursday night against the Sullivan Lady Eagles.
Henry Josey scampered for a go-ahead 57-yard TD run with 3:34 remaining and 5th ranked Missouri clinched the SEC East with a 28-21 triumph over 19th ranked Texas A&M. The Tigers (11-1, 7-1 SEC) advance to the conference championship next Saturday to take on Auburn.
Earnest Ross was one of three players to score 20 points for Missouri as the Tigers handled Nevada, 83-70. Missouri will host West Virginia on Thursday in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.
Brent Burns netted his first-career hat trick to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues from SAP Center. The Blues will be in L.A. tonight to face the Kings and you can hear it on KSMO starting at 9:00.
The San Francisco 49ers rode an efficient performance from Colin Kaepernick and a stifling defensive display to a 23-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams at Candlestick Park. The Rams will play the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
Four of Peyton Manning's five touchdown passes went to Eric Decker and the Denver Broncos held on to beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-28, on Sunday for first place in the AFC West. The Chiefs will play the Redskins on Sunday.
