The City of Salem Board of Aldermen met for the regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, Alderman McDaniels asked about the asphalting and Mayor Gary Brown stated that South Hickory was finished, that South Pershing was paved between Franklin and Highway 32, and that a small part on Tower Street was done. Alderman Nash asked about Boyce Lane being maintained by the city and City Attorney Nancy Wisdom will have to review the easement to see if it includes street maintenance. Nash also asked about an employee handbook and the mayor told him that a handbook was completed, but it needs to be reviewed by the city attorney before it is finalized. Nash also complained about a trailer home that was placed over a home site that had been burnt out on South Jackson as it was unsightly. He proposed creating an ordinance to prohibit this from happening in the future and the city attorney would see if one can be drawn up. Mayor Brown then read that a new state statute would go into effect on January 1^st requiring retail business owners to fill out Form 4379A that states that they do not owe sales or state taxes or their local business license would be revoked or not allowed. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs spoke on the work of the Tourism Committee in proposing doing a direct mail marketing piece to people who have already visited Salem. She said that a ¼ page ad is going to be in the Rural Magazine for the Road Rally in February. She also said that the group discussed redoing the signs in the city with a common header. She said this would be a collaborative effort of a number of groups. She also mentioned that the students from Missouri Science & Technology would be at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room tonight at  6:00 to go over their projects they have done for the city. The board then approved allowing city workers to have off Christmas day and the Friday after instead of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The board approved Resolution 5-2008 in order to apply for grant funds of $75,000 from the Department of Natural Resources, Land and Water Conservation Fund. The grant is a 45/55 match. The board also approved the purchase of new tables to replace the 15 tables that were stolen from the Salem Freedom Activity Center for $1,056 from Lowes. The money would be moved over from the Christmas Decoration fund that was not used this year. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.

An accident happened around 8:25 Sunday night in Dent County on Route H about 9 miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report a 2005 Dodge pickup driven by 25-year old Ashley Roberts of Salem, was attempting to pass on a snow covered bridge when she lost control and struck the back of a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 41-year old Pamela McElvy of Edgar Springs. McElvy then lost control and traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned. Roberts ran off the right side of the roadway. McElvy suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Salem Memorial Hospital. Everyone was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Jeep was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem. The Dodge had minor damage and was driven from the scene.

An accident happened around 5:45 Sunday evening in Taney County on Highway 248 about a mile northwest of Branson. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Hundai driven by 24-year old Amanda Faulkner of Branson, rounded and curve too fast, skidded across the centerline and hit head-on a 2005 Mercury driven by 33-year old Sandra Roberts of Alamogordo, New Mexico. Faulkner suffered serious injuries and was taken to Skaggs Hospital in Branson. Passengers in the Hyundai, 16-year old Steven Stewart and 17-year old Ashley Stone of Branson both suffered moderate injuries. A passenger in the Mercury, 7-year old Faith Roberts of Salem, suffered minor injuries. Everyone was taken to the Skaggs Hospital in Branson. The Hundai was totaled and removed from the scene by Ozark Mountain Towing of Branson. The Jeep Cherokee had extensive damage and was removed by the owner.

The Salem R-80 schools will be dismissed early Wednesday, December 3rd due to a teacher In-service. William Lynch will dismiss at 11:15, Salem Upper Elementary at 11:20 and Salem Junior and Senior High Schools will dismiss at 11:30, and the rural schools, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV will dismiss at 11:45 am.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers battled Monday night with Cape Notre Dame to a half time deadlock of 44-44, but Cape Notre dame outscored Salem in the third quarter, 21-8 and cruised to a 88-63 victory over Salem. Cody Wofford scored 17 points to lead the Tigers and C.J. Smith notched 15 more for Salem. Dex West added 10 more for Salem whose record drops to 1-1 on the year. The Tiger will play Oakville Thursday night in the Farmington tournament.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff tonight at 7:00. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 6:30. Missouri is 5-1 on the year.
