The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Parade of Lights will be held this Saturday starting at 5:30 at the corner of McArthur and Franklin in Salem and will end up at the Dent County Courthouse. The theme this year is “Toyland Christmas” and everyone is invited enjoy.
A quick reminder that the Dent County Collector’s Office in the Dent County Courthouse will be open from 8:00 AM until noon this Saturday for those who would like to pay their personal property and real estate taxes. If you have any questions, feel free to call 729-3911.
The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell was not in attendance due to a prior commitment. In the road report, Rusty Chamberlain gave the District 1 report for Purcell and said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4122 and 4124, while rock would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 5615. He also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5630. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2120, 3040, 3080 and 5300. He reported that materials would be added to Dent County Roads 2140 and 3170. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he checked on the 9-1-1 procedures on a call from Sligo that Gary Fritzinger brought to the commissioners attention at the last meeting. Skiles found that the original 9-1-1 call was made at 7:22 in the morning and it went to Steelville where the call was transferred to the Quad County Ambulance District. They discovered the call was not in their area and called the Dent County Sheriff’ Department’s dispatch who then called the Salem Memorial District Hospital at 7:28. The ambulance left the hospital at 7:30 and arrived at the residence in Sligo at 7:57. Skiles also said that he and Commissioner Larson attended the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District Annual Meeting and Recognition Dinner Tuesday at the MRPC. Dent County Deputy Wayne Becker came in and asked the commission to put out for bid a three-year lease/purchase for the new $26,000 pickup for the Sheriff’s Department. The commission approved the request and the bids will be opened on December 13th at 10:00 AM. The Commissioners opened sealed bids from five different vendors that included 11 different vehicles for a 1999-2006 pickup truck for the Road and Bridge Department. No decision was made on the truck at the meeting. At the last meeting, the commissioners voted unanimously to close for the whole day on Monday, December 24th for Christmas Eve. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Board of Aldermen held a special meeting Thursday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Gary Brown read a letter of resignation from Alderman Gerald Randell effective immediately. The letter was dated November 23rd and was received at the city administrative offices on November 26th. The Board of Aldermen unanimously accepted the resignation, 3-0. The board then set the Municipal Election for April 2nd where two East Ward Alderman and one West Ward Alderman will be elected. One East Ward Alderman will be elected for a one-year term while the other East Ward Alderman will be elected for a two-year term. The West Ward Aldermanic position will be for a two-year term. To be a candidate for alderman, you must be at least 21 years of age, be a US Citizen and you must be a city resident for at least one year in the ward you intend to serve. The filing fee is $25.00 and filing will be held from December 11th through January 15th at the City Administrative offices at 400 North Iron Street from 8:00 to 5:00, Monday through Friday except for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The board then started reviewing a draft of the revised book of ordinance codes as prepared by Sullivan Publications. After some of the revised ordinance sections didn’t match up with the draft, City Administrator Clayton Lucas suggested that he get in touch with Sullivan Publications and get them to correct the draft so that it would correspond with the revised ordinances. The meeting was then adjourned. The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting Monday night at 6:00.
Healthy Dent County is proud to announce that it has been chosen to receive a $100,000 grant from the Department of Natural Resources Recreational Trails grant program. This grant is to build a hiking/biking trail around the land at the Salem Upper Elementary School. The school sits on 41.6 acres of land and the trail would be built around the outside perimeter to allow for local citizens to use the trail as well as student and teachers to use part of the trail as an outside classroom area. The trail will be 1.5 miles in length, eight foot wide, and will include both wooded and open areas. The awarding of this grant was made possible by the numerous in-kind pledges that Healthy Dent County received to build this trail. The Salem R-80 School District has been instrumental by donating the use of the school land to build a community trail. In-kind donations totaled $163,781 and came from local businesses, groups, and organizations. The money from the grant will be used to pay for the trail to be built while the in-kind donations will be for upkeep of the trail. Construction is expected to begin in early 2013 with completion later in the year.

The Sullivan Lady Eagles jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they beat the Salem Lady Tigers on Thursday, 73-39. Cortney Putman scored 10 points for Salem, who is now 1-1 on the year. The Lady Tigers will play in the Cabool Tournament starting on Monday.
The Salem Tiger boys’ basketball team will be back in action tonight, as they will be on the road to face Pacific. Salem is 1-0 on the year and you can hear the game at 7:00 on KSMO and ksmoradio.com.
The 16th ranked Missouri Tiger basketball team will host Appalachian State on Saturday. Missouri is 5-1 on the year and you’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio at 1:30.
The St. Louis Rams will be hosting division rival San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, while the Kansas City Chiefs will be hosting the Carolina Panthers. The Rams are 4-6-1 and the Chiefs are 1-10. Kickoff for both games is at noon.
The Kansas City Royals and pitcher Felipe Paulino agreed to a one-year contract Thursday, avoiding arbitration. Paulino, 29, went 3-1 with a 1.67 earned run average over seven starts last season before surgery ended his campaign.

Graveside service for Charles Heuer Jr. of Rolla, age 93, will be held Tuesday at 3:00 at the Steelville Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Junior Ray Boyer of Rolla, age 48, will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family of Junior Boyer. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
