With the arrival of wintery weather to Salem, it is important to remember that the city has designated “Emergency Snow Routes.” The following streets shall have priority over other streets for the clearing of snow, ice or other debris: Third Street west from Highway 19 to Dilworth Lane, and Third Street east from Pershing Avenue to MacArthur Avenue; Fourth Street from Pershing Avenue to MacArthur Avenue; Sixth Street from MacArthur Avenue to Pershing Avenue; Jackson Street north from Sixth Street (Rolla Road) to the dead end; Tenth Street from Highway 19 to Walnut Hill Drive;  Pershing Avenue from Tenth Street to Highway 32/72; Center Street from Highway 19 to Craig Industrial Drive; Carty Street from Highway 32-72 to Center Street; Craig Industrial Drive from Highway 32/72 to Iron Mountain Road; Babb Lane from Highway 32/72 to Roosevelt Street; Doss Road from the city limits to Highway 32/72; Roosevelt Street east from Highway 19 to Babb Lane and west from Highway 19 to Wines Street; Wines Street from Roosevelt Street to Highway 32/72; Missouri Avenue from Highway 32/72 to Sixth Street (Rolla Road); Franklin Street west from MacArthur Avenue to Highway 72 and east from Highway 19 to Pershing Avenue; Dilworth Lane from Route J to Highway 32-72, and Center Street from Dilworth Lane to Missouri Avenue. Remember to remove your vehicle from these routes when an accumulation of ice and snow is expected so that the route can be cleared or it could be towed at your expense, or you could be sited for a parking violation.

An accident occurred Tuesday afternoon at 12:33 in Salem at the intersection of Highways 32 and 72. According to the Salem Police report, a green 1993 Ford Mustang driven by Gary Johns Jr. of Salem, was traveling east on Highway 32. The Ford was making a left turn onto Highway 72 and failed to see a white 1999 Subaru Outback driven by Judith Dudley of Rolla, and contact was made between the two vehicles. A passenger in the Ford Mustang, 31-year old Charles Johns, suffered head injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred Wednesday morning at 1:50 in Dent County on Route YY about nine miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Jeep Cherokee driven by 25-year old Lena Copenace of Salem was traveling northbound on Route YY. Copenace failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the centerline, then ran off the left side of the roadway before she returned to the roadway and overturned. Copenace suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Jeep was totaled and was towed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem.

The Dent County R-80 school district will dismiss schools early on Friday, December 1st, due to a teacher in-service. Dismissal times are: William Lynch will dismiss at 11:15 am, Salem R-80 Upper Elementary will dismiss at 11:20 am, the Salem R-80 Jr. and Sr. High Schools will dismiss at 11:30 am, and the rural schools of Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV will dismiss at 11:45 am.

Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded eight traffic fatalities during the month of October 2006.  This is the same amount of fatalities as October 2005. The total amount of fatalities for 2006 is 41 as compared to 55 for the same time period last year. For October in Crawford County, there were 38 accidents with nine injuries and one fatality; in Dent County, there were 21 accidents with nine injuries and one fatality; and in Phelps County, there were 94 accidents with 45 injuries.

The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will hold two of its traditional holiday events soon. Their 14th annual “Cookie Walk” will be held Sunday from 11:00 to 3:00, and their “Children’s Old Fashioned Christmas” will be held on Monday from 6:30 to 8:00 for kids through the 6th grade. The Jackson Indians came out flying and grabbed a 27-14 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 92-56 win over Salem in the first round of the Farmington Tournament. Salem closed to within nine points early in the third quarter only to have Jackson take advantage of a couple of Tiger turnovers and blow open to the game. Salem was led in scoring by Taylor Sirois with 16 points and seven rebounds, and Solomon McNeal who netted 11 more. Salem is 1-1 and is scheduled to play today at 5:00 at the Farmington Civic Center. The Salem Lady Tigers are scheduled to play St. James tonight at 6:00 with the JV action first followed by the varsity contest. The Lady Tigers are 2-0 on the year.

The St. Louis Blues will try to stop a two-game losing streak as they host the Nashville Predators tonight starting at 7:00. You can hear the 1st period on KSMO Radio.

The Blues have sent down defensemen Jeff Wowitka to make room on the roster for the return of defensemen Jay McGhee who is returning from a broken finger suffered in his first shift after missing the first ten games with an injury.

The Missouri Tigers will face the Arkansas Razorbacks tonight starting at 8:00 at the Mizzou Arena. Missouri enters the game with a perfect 7-0 record. You can hear the game on KSMO.

A Memorial service for Mary Ann Cooley of St. James, age 54, will be held at the VFW Hall in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Family of Mary Ann Cooley. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Graveside services for Herbert Buil Deese of Salem, age 87, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield. Visitation will be held tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel.
