The City of Salem Board of Alderman will be conducting a Special Meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington tonight beginning at 6:00 pm. The Board will review the recommended changes to the City of Salem’s Municipal Code as provided by Sullivan Publications. The Board will call for a Municipal Election, address a letter of resignation and then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.
Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded zero traffic fatalities during the month of October of 2012. This is six less than for October of 2011. There were 183 accidents with 58 injuries and no fatalities for October 2012, compared to 201 accidents with 77 injuries and six fatalities for October 2011. The total fatalities for 2012 now stand at 34, which is four more than last year. In October, there were 21 accidents with 11 injuries reported in Crawford County; 14 accidents with 8 injuries reported in Dent County and in Laclede County, there were 40 accidents with 15 injuries recorded. In Maries County, there were 11 accidents and four injuries reported, Phelps County had 52 accidents with 10 injuries recorded and I n Pulaski County, there were 45 accidents with 10 injuries reported.
The Salem Police Department has released several reports. On Thursday, November 22nd at 4:30 in the afternoon, a vehicle was stopped for an investigation involving narcotics. The investigation led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem female for possession of a controlled substance. She was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. On Saturday, November 24th at 5:25 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. The investigation revealed that someone entered a residence in the 1400 block of Scenic Rivers Boulevard and assaulted a 21-year old Salem male. Later that same morning at 11:41, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter who had fled the scene with merchandise. While in route to Walmart, the officer located the suspect’s vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The stop led to the arrest of a passenger, a 26-year old Salem male, for stealing items valued at $8.26 and for trespassing. He was issued two summonses to appear in court and was released. Then on Sunday, November 25th at 12:11 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the Casey’s General Store on South Main in reference to theft of fuel. The investigation revealed that an unidentified driver of a white Chrysler passenger car pumped $37.27 in fuel and left without paying. Later that evening at 7:49, an officer responded to the Casey’s General Store on South Macarthur in reference to theft of fuel. That investigation revealed the driver of a gray 1998 Chevrolet truck pumped $62.60 in fuel and left without paying. A report of suspicious activity was made to the Rolla Police Department Tuesday evening at about 7:30 in Rolla at the small strip mall at the corner of Highway 63 and 72 inside the old Quiznos, where law enforcement officers located four individuals under the age of 21 inside the building and found what they termed “a potentially explosive device” in a vehicle. The investigation by the police found alcoholic beverages and a plastic pipe that contained what appeared to be gunpowder in the vehicle driven to the building. Police evacuated area businesses for safety purposes and the Missouri State Highway Patrol Bomb Squad was then notified. The investigation discovered that there was no detonating device or fuse. The bomb was disassembled and the area was made safe. The four individuals found in the building were questioned and were then released pending further investigation.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will continue to perform roadwork in our area this week. In Phelps County, crews will be installing a guard rail and rumble strips along the roadway and striping the road in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 44 between mile markers 179 and 185. Work will take place between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Occasional eastbound lane closures are possible through the work area. The project is scheduled for completion in December. In Texas County, Route MM from Highway 60 to Route 38 will be reduced to one lane while crews cut brush and trim trees. Approach work on ramps and various overpasses will take place on Highway 60 from Highway 181 in Texas County to Highway 5 in Wright County. In Shannon County, Highway 19 from Highway 60 in Winona to Route A will be reduced to one lane while crews cut brush and trim trees. The Missouri Department of Agriculture is giving 30 high school students representing 4-H clubs and FFA chapters throughout Missouri the opportunity to explore careers in agriculture through the 2013 Missouri Agribusiness Academy, a competitive program for sophomores interested in pursuing agriculture-related college degrees and careers. The 2013 Missouri Agribusiness Academy will be held June 3rd through 7th and marks the program’s 26th year. This year, the students selected have the opportunity to learn about the many unique opportunities for careers in southwestern Missouri. The group will kick off the Academy at College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia, then head southwest to spend the week in the Springfield area, visiting with industry leaders and agribusinesses specializing in animal health, communication, sales and financial management. Applications for students interested in becoming part of the 2013 class are available online at mda.mo.gov and are due no later than February 1, 2013. The Salem Lady Tiger basketball squad will be in Sullivan tonight to face the Lady Eagles. Salem is 1-0 on the year and the JV will start things off at 6:00 with the varsity to follow.
St. Louis Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins was recognized as the NFC's Defensive Player of the Week for week 12. Jenkins returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the Rams' 31-17 win at Arizona. He is the first player in franchise history to return two interceptions for a touchdown in a regular season game.

Funeral services for Col. Herbert (Jerry) Hines of Salem, age 96, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 9:00 until time of service at the church. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Pauline Davis of Salem, age 86, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Davis Family.
Funeral services for Samuel C. Oliver of Rolla, age 91, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
