There will only be two sign-ups for the Christmas Toy Drive sponsored by the Dent County Fire Protection District and the first will be held today from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Fire Station at the corner of Highway 19 and Center Streets. The second sign-up date will be Tuesday, December 4th from 4:00 to 7:00. Your child MUST be signed up to receive toys at the Christmas Toy Drive giveaways and they will be held on Thursday, December 20th from 2:00 to 7:00 and Friday, December 21st from 10:00 until 2:00. The Dent County Fire Protection District is accepting toy donations again this year and the 2007 Christmas Toy Drive drop off locations are the Dent County Fire Station, the Salem Police Station, Dollar General and the KSMO Radio Station lobby.

The University of Missouri Extension Telecenter will be offering a program to help small business owners and entrepreneurs write a successful effective business plan. The classes will be held at the Salem TCRC on three consecutive Mondays, starting December 3rd, 10th and 17th from 8:00 to 10:00 am. President/CEO of the Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce, Ken Parrett, will conduct the training. A business plan is the most important means you can use as a business owner to set and achieve goals, outline strategies, provide background information, secure funding and ensure the success of your business. The City of Salem is having a Surplus Sale on Saturday, December 1st at the City of Salem’s Electric Department located at 1201 South Wines and it starts at 10:00 am. Items to be auctioned off include three vehicles, equipment including a Murray Riding Lawn Mower, and an electric band saw, also wire and poles, some copper tubing and other miscellaneous items. It is the responsibility of the buyer to remove those items purchased. For a complete list of the items to be auctioned off at the City of Salem Surplus Sale, pick up your list at the Salem City Hall, get the insert in Your World Today (Wednesday, November 28th edition), or check for the list in the Salem News.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Auxiliary is sponsoring a “Holiday Home Tour” on Sunday, December 2nd from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Homes on the Tour include Jack and Christy Kerr, Roger and Joey Crossgrove, Jim and Christina Steelman, Sean and Angie Curley and Bryan and Melanie Wisdom. Also included on the Tour is the “Trees and Trains” display at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center and refreshments will be served at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room. Tickets are $6 each and are available at the Salem Memorial District Hospital, Edward Jones and all area banks or they may even be purchased at the individual homes. Brad Boyes scored with 57.5 seconds left in regulation, as the Blues came away with a 4-3 victory over Buffalo and continued their domination of the Sabres. Martin Rucinsky, Paul Kariya and Mike Johnson also had goals for the Blues, who are unbeaten against the Sabres in the last 12 meetings. Bryce Salvador and Keith Tkachuk each had two assists for St. Louis, which also extended its overall winning streak to three and has won seven of its last eight games. Manny Legace made 20 saves for the Blues, who are unbeaten in eight games all- time at HSBC Arena. The Sabres haven't defeated St. Louis in Buffalo since a 5-2 win at The Aud on October 22, 1995.

Charles Thomas put forth 21 points and eight rebounds as the Arkansas Razorbacks held off the Missouri Tigers, 94-91, in a non-conference battle at Bud Walton Arena. Stefhon Hannah led Missouri (5-2) and all scorers with 28 points and five assists. Keon Lawrence logged 17 points and eight boards, and Matt Lawrence finished with 12 points and six rebounds. DeMarre Carroll had 11 points for the Tigers, who had their two-game win streak snapped.

The Kansas City Royals signed right-handed reliever Yasuhiko Yabuta to a two-year contract Wednesday. The deal for the 34-year-old includes a club option for 2010. Yabuta has spent his entire 12-year career with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan's Pacific League, with a career mark of 44-59 with nine saves and a 4.03 earned run average.

Chiefs quarterback Brodie Croyle did not practice Wednesday with a back injury, and may not be recovered in time for Kansas City's game against the Chargers on Sunday. The Ram's Mark Bulger also missed practice still suffering from the effects of a concussion on Sunday.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa pleaded guilty to driving under the influence Wednesday. Cardinals chairman William Dewitt said, "We have been satisfied with Tony's responsible approach to this issue and we respect his decision. With today's news, our ball club considers the matter closed."

Funeral services for William ‘Bud” Shaw of Salem, age 63, will be this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Edgar Cemetery in Anutt with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth McDonough of Salem, age 67, will be held this at 11:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the New Harmony Church.

Funeral services for Rosella Munzer of Anutt, age 95, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Anutt United Methodist Church in Anutt. Interment will be in the Victor Cemetery in Anutt. Memorials are suggested to the Anutt United Methodist Church. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem.

Visitation for William Kenneth (Bill) Haase of Salem, age 74, will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. 

Funeral services for Mary Birdsong, of Salem, age 70, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Elmer Bryant of Salem, age 90, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Memorials may be made to the Seville Care Center Resident Fund.

Funeral services for Helen M. Wienert of Pittsburg, Mo. formerly of Rolla, age 75, will be held Monday, December 3 at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. 

Funeral services Evelyn Hilgedick of Marshfield, formerly of Salem, age 88, will be Tuesday, December 4th at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Monday, December 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter.
