The Salem Police Department released their reports for November 12th through the 17th involving thefts and property damage. On November 12th at 2:23 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 600 block of North Pershing in reference to a theft. The report revealed that person(s) unknown took from the yard of a residence four cast iron chairs displayed as yard ornaments. The chairs are valued at $100. The report is under investigation. On November 13th at 7:00 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown damaged the mailbox belonging to the State School on South Warfel. The value of the damage is $50 and the report is under investigation. On November 14th at 4:50 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Salem City Park in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown tore a transition ramp from the short skateboard ramp. Damage is valued at $100 and the report is under investigation. On November 15th at 5:08 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that person(s) unknown took two tool boxes with hand tools in them from the back of a Chevrolet Blazer which was parked in the driveway of a residence in the 1000 block of East Pace. The tools are valued at $50 and the report in under investigation. On November 17th at 7:55 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 500 block of North Jackson in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown had deflated the tires on the passenger side of a blue and silver 1997 Dodge truck by cutting the valve stems. The damage is valued at $12 and report is still under investigation. Captain Randy Becker, Commanding Officer of Troop I, Rolla, announced the traffic and crash results for Troop I during the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend and the results of the Troop I Combined Accident Reduction Effort (CARE), which ran during that same period. During the four-day period, which began at 6:00PM on Wednesday, November 22 and ended on Sunday, November 26 at midnight, troopers assigned to the six county Troop I area investigated 21 accidents that resulted in 10 injuries. Compared to the same period last year, these accident totals reflect 14 fewer accidents and five less injuries. Captain Becker was also pleased to announce that this year, like last, there were no traffic fatalities during the holiday period in the Troop I area. In an effort to reduce traffic crashes, troopers throughout the state once again participated in the C.A.R.E. program. As a part of this program, Troop I Officers issued 375 citations for speeding, ticketed 77 individuals for failure to a wear a seat belt, five for not having a child under age eight properly secured in a booster or child safety seat and made seven arrests for driving while intoxicated. During the holiday period Troop I Officers also rendered assistance to 107motorists. The Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend is traditionally one of the busiest times on our highways. However, Christmas and New Year’s Day are rapidly approaching, and they too will mean more traffic on our roads. Captain Becker wants to encourage everyone to do their part in helping make our roads as safe as possible, by slowing down, buckling-up and making the wise decision to not drink and drive.
Winter weather is fast approaching, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will use the same priority system for clearing the roadway of any ice and snow it has employed in past seasons. To accomplish this, employees will work in shifts around the clock putting to use a fleet of equipment and materials to get the job done in an efficient and effective manner. Priority 1 routes will be cleared first and receive continuous treatment throughout a storm. These routes have the highest volume of traffic traveling on them and include interstates and other major routes. Priority 2 will be assigned to the heaviest-traveled sections of state numbered and letter routes. Lower volume, lettered or numbered routes will be assigned a priority 3 with special consideration given to routes traveled by school buses and commuters. During regular work hours, MoDOT crews will clear shoulders, bridge areas and interchanges of accumulation, which is considered priority 4. Monday night, the Salem Lady Basketball Tigers defeated Fatima by the score of 48 to 35. Salem was led in scoring by Kirsten Stephens with 17 points followed by Natalie Howard with 11 points. Salem is now 2-0 on the year. They will participate in the Cabool Tournament next week where they are seeded 1st. The Lady Tigers will play Cabool in the first round Monday night at 6:00
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will face Jackson today at 5:00 at the Farmington High School. Salem is 1-0 on the season. You can hear the game today on KSMO starting at 4:45 with Tiger Talk and Coach Travis Wrightsman.
Vesa Toskala made 29 saves to post his second shutout of the season as the San Jose Sharks upended the St. Louis Blues, 2-0, at Scottrade Center. Ryane Clowe and Joe Pavelski each had a goal for the Sharks, who have won three straight and five of their last seven. Manny Legace stopped 25 shots for the Blues, who have dropped their past two games. The Blues will face Nashville Thursday night at 7:00 on KSMO.
The St. Louis Cardinals made a number of moves on Tuesday, most importantly is the signing of second baseman Adam Kennedy to a three-year contract. Kennedy hit .273 with four homers and 55 runs batted in for the LA Angels of Anaheim last season. The 30-year old returns to St. Louis where he played 33 games in 1999 before being sent to Anaheim in the Jim Edmonds trade. St. Louis also signed pitcher Kip Wells, who struggled to stay healthy last season with a blood clot in his right shoulder. Wells, 29, split time with Pittsburgh and Texas in 2005, compiling a 2-5 record with a 6.50 earned run average in nine starts. Backup catcher Gary Bennett re-signed with the Cardinals on a one-year dealand the Cardinals also signed 33-year-old utilityman Eli Marrero to a minor-league contract. Marrero, who began his career with St. Louis, is a career .243 hitter with 66 homers and 261 RBI in 10 seasons.
Kansas City Chiefs running back Priest Holmes will not return to the team this season. Tuesday was the last day the Chiefs could have activated Holmes. There was some good news, however. Chiefs’ general manager Carl Peterson said that recent medical tests have been encouraging and Holmes hopes to play in 2007.

Funeral services for Charles Freeman Lint of Steelville, age 85, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Interment will be in the Skaggs Cemetery in Steelville.
