The Salem Police has released several reports. On Friday, November 16th at 11:45 in the morning, an officer was contacted by a probation officer in reference to a 23-year old Salem male who had violated the terms of his probation by using controlled substances. He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that evening at 9:31, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of an intoxicated 32-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $20.95. He was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Saturday, November 17th at 12:45 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1200 block of South Washington in reference to a domestic disturbance. That investigation revealed that a 28-year old Salem male assaulted a 33-year old Salem female. He was arrested and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that afternoon at 12:38, an officer located a 35-year old Salem male who had an active warrant from Newburg in the 1500 block of South Main. He was taken into custody and later released with a court date after posting bond. On Tuesday, November 20th at 12:20 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a passenger, a 22-year old Salem female, on an active warrant from Dent County. She was incarcerated pending a court appearance. That same morning at 1:43, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 27-year old St. James female passenger on an active warrant from the Bell Police Department. She was released with a court date after posting bond. Later that same day at 4:00 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Phelps County to pick up a 35-year old Salem male who was being held on two warrants from the City of Salem. He was transported to the Dent County Jail where he was incarcerated pending a court appearance. That evening at 6:16, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of North Washington in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a Toshiba satellite lap top computer valued at $500. Anyone with any information regarding the theft report, which is still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports one person died during this year’s Thanksgiving holiday counting period that began at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, November 21st and ran through 11:59 pm on Sunday, November 25th. Troopers investigated 350 traffic crashes, which included 140 injuries. In addition, troopers arrested 140 people for driving while intoxicated. The Highway Patrol investigated the fatal traffic crash. During the 2011 Thanksgiving holiday, troopers investigated 365 traffic crashes, which included 125 injuries. Statewide, there were four fatalities over the 2011 Thanksgiving weekend. Troopers arrested 126 people for driving while intoxicated in 2011. The fatal traffic crash occurred on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, in the Troop D, Springfield area. There were no boating incidents reported during the 2012 Thanksgiving holiday counting period.
The Salem TCRC will host a hands-on workshop titled “Using QuickBooks Pro 2012 Software”. This workshop will be held on Tuesday, December 4th, from 12:00 (noon) to 5:00 pm. Chester “Ed” Pratt, local CPA with Pratt, Mitchell & Company, will be the instructor. You will learn how to get quick solutions to problems and questions, discover amazing tips and tricks, learn to use QuickBooks® the right way, and master tricky transactions. Students will have hands on instruction in the Salem TCRC Computer Lab. Each participant will have a computer workstation. Class size is limited to 10 students. The Salem TCRC is located in the Salem Freedom Activity Center at 1200 W. Rolla Road in Salem. The cost for this workshop is $100 and the price includes student handouts. Pat Todd, teacher of the Salem Adult Education and Literacy class, has dreamed of improving her classroom to make it more comfortable for her students for several years. Recently her dreams became reality with a grant from the Judson Young Foundation. The South Central Missouri Literacy Council recently received a grant from the Judson Young Foundation that made it possible for them to purchase much-needed tables and chairs for the Salem class. Seven tables and 24 new chairs will make a big change in the comfort level for students in the classroom. An additional four new chairs will help those students who have physical limitations to sit comfortably while in class. In addition to the tables and chairs, two heaters were purchased to add warmth to the basement class site during the winter months. MoDOT has added a text alert option to its popular “E-update” email subscription system. This means travelers can get urgent road information sent straight to their mobile device. Just visit www.modot.org/eupdates to sign up for the service. You don’t even need a smartphone, just one that can receive text messages. If you already have an E-update account, just login and add your provider information and cellphone number. If you’re new to E-updates, create an account and choose which counties, routes, and regions you want to know about. Current E-update subscribers just need to go to the sign-in page and supply their cellphone number and provider name. Their subscriptions will carry over. When there’s trouble on a road or region you’ve added, whether it’s weather-related or an incident, MoDOT’s staff will send notifications to everyone who’s signed up. You’ll get a short message telling you what’s going on, and if you want to opt out of the service later, just log in to your account and remove your cellphone information. A MoDOT E-update account is required and data charges may apply depending on your cellphone package. Even if you don’t opt in for the text alert option, E-updates can keep you informed of road conditions, project information and other transportation-related info through email. MoDOT reminds everyone that distracted driving is a major contributor to traffic crashes and this feature should NEVER be used while driving.

The National Hockey League and the NHL Players' Association have agreed to the inclusion of federal mediation in ongoing negotiations towards a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Mediation by a third party was also done during the 2004-05 lockout. The hope is an objective party will help get the negotiating process on track. The current work stoppage, which started on September 16th, has cancelled games up top December 14th, which includes 422 regular-season games, as well as the Winter Classic and All-Star Weekend.

Funeral services for Samuel C. Oliver of Rolla, age 91, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Col. Herbert (Jerry) Hines of Salem, age 96, will be Friday at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00 to 11:00. Special service will be a Full Military Honors at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. All arrangemnets are under the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
