The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. Commissioner Bobby Simpson was not in attendance; he is on vacation this week. Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done in the Boss area and in the White River Trace area on Dent County Roads 254, 255 and 256. Tune said that grading would also be done on Dent County Road 318 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 314. The rest of District 2 would be inspecting snow equipment and hauling rock to the crusher. Presiding Commissioner Jim Biggs reported that representatives from the State Auditor’s office would be at the courthouse this morning at 9:30 to meet with the Commissioner’s to discuss the draft version of the counties audit. Dent County Clerk Janet Inman reported that Linda Roos would be transferring from the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to the Dent County Clerk’s Office, Mary Ann Curley was hired in the Dent County Collector’s Office through December 31st to help out with tax collection, and Michael Letchworth was hired by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Fire Protection District is hosting the Dent County Fire 2006 Toy Drive. This is the same toy drive that has been held for years by the Salem Lions’ Club. New or slightly used toys are being collected and you can drop your donations at the large drop boxes for the Toy Drive at the Dent County Fire Station, the Salem Police Department, the KSMO lobby, Dollar General and Country Mart. The last day to make donations for the Dent County Fire 2006 Toy Drive is December 17th. Monetary donations will be accepted in person at the Dent County Fire Department located at #2 South Main Street in Salem.
The Salem FFA Chapter is having their Poinsettia Sale this week. The sale will feature an 8-inch pot with plants from 10-14 inches tall for $8.00 each. And they also have a 10-inch pot with three colors of Poinsettias, the pink/red/white for $15.00 each. The best times to come and check out the greenhouse deals is while the class is going on and that is from 10:00 to 10:45 every morning, Monday through Friday and the in the afternoons from 2:15 to 4:00 pm. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports 11 people died during this year’s Thanksgiving holiday counting period from 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2006 through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, November 26, 2006. The Highway Patrol investigated 10 of the fatalities and the Florissant Police Department investigated one fatality. This year, the Patrol investigated 327 traffic crashes that included 153 injuries. Troopers also arrested 156 people for driving while intoxicated. In 2005, troopers investigated 397 traffic crashes including 180 injuries. There were 139 people arrested for driving while intoxicated in 2005. (Statewide, there were 19 people killed in Missouri during the 2005 Thanksgiving holiday.) Of the 10 fatalities investigated by troopers, four occurred in the Troop H St. Joseph area; two occurred in the Troop E Poplar Bluff area; and one fatality each occurred in the Troop B Macon area, Troop C St. Louis area, Troop D Springfield area, and Troop G Willow Springs area.

The Missouri Tigers defeated Coppin State last night by the score of 98-77 to move to 7-0 on the year. The Tigers were led by Marshall Brown with 21 points, Matt Lawrence with 20, Kalen Grimes with 19 and Stefhon Hannah with 12. Missouri will face the Arkansas Razorbacks on Thursday night at 8:00. You can hear the game on KSMO after the St. Louis Blues hockey game.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they will face Jackson in the first round of the Farmington Tournament. You can hear the game on KSMO. Salem enters the game with a 1-0 record.
The St. Louis Blues will be back in action tonight as they host the San Jose Sharks. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 7:00.

Two-time Most Valuable Player Cal Ripken Jr., eight-time batting champion Tony Gwynn and home run champion Mark McGwire are among the 17 first-year candidates on the 2007 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot, announced Monday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen and former MVPs Ken Caminiti and Jose Canseco are also eligible for the first time. The voting results for the Class of 2007 will be announced on January 9, 2007. While Ripken and Gwynn appear to be locks for induction, McGwire could face some uncertainty. McGwire hit 583 home runs during his 16-year career with Oakland and St. Louis and became the first player to break the single-season home run record of 61 when he bashed 70 in 1998. However, McGwire set his big numbers during baseball's steroids era and his reticence to "talk about the past" during Congress' hearings on performance-enhancing drugs in sports left many questions unanswered. McGwire's home run total ranks seventh in baseball history and he led each league in homers twice.

Funeral services for Lloyd O. Cook of Salem, age 80, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Care Center.
Funeral services for Geneva Jackson of St. Louis, formerly of Howes Mill, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Funeral services for Fern James of Vandalia, formerly of Salem, age 82, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Hepsoda Cemetery in rural Dent County.
A graveside service for Carolyn Sue Graves of O’Fallon, age 59, will follow after visitation today from noon to 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Foundation.
Funeral services for Charles Freeman Lint of Steelville, age 85, will be held Wednesday at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Skaggs Cemetery in Steelville.
