The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire Friday afternoon at 3:40 on Route H about 1½ miles from Salem. According to their report, the property was owned by Vernon Miller and all structures were considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Missouri State Fire Marshall’s Office. The Dent County Fie Protection District was assisted by the Jadwin Fire Department as they sent two personnel and a tanker, and by the Lenox Fire Department who sent four personnel and a tanker. There were seventeen Dent County Fire Protection District personnel at the scene along with seven trucks. Firefighters were on the scene about four hours and fifteen minutes. The fire district wanted to thank KFC for providing refreshments for all the fire personnel at the scene.
The Salem Police Department released their reports for November 10th through the 20th involving disorderly conduct, an ex-parte violation, and assault. On November 10th at 1:07 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 100 block of East Third in reference to a disturbance that led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On November 11th at 1:30 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station by a 23-year old female in reference to an ex-parte violation of a 27-year old Salem male. The report is under investigation. On November 14th at 12:22 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 100 block of East Third in reference to a domestic assault. The report revealed a 19-year old Salem male had assaulted a 17-year old Salem female. The report is under investigation. On November 20th at 3:31 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 400 block of North Jackson in reference to an assault. The report revealed that a 24-year old Salem male had assaulted a 17-year old Salem female. He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court and released.
The Salem Area Community Betterment Association with financial support from the City of Salem and Dent County is conducting a Community Need Assessment Survey, and your participation is critical in the success of this survey. The survey will be distributed as an insert in the Salem News tomorrow. The Salem Area Community Betterment Association wants to know what people think about many issues in our community. The survey will serve as one way to voice your opinion. Previous surveys have been very useful in community planning and we hope you will participate. Surveys can be completed for a household or additional copies of the survey are available for individual responses. Replies will be confidential and only used in an overall summary. Completed surveys will be accepted through Friday, December 8th, 2006 at the Visitor Center, The Salem News, or in the outside book return at the Salem Public Library at 102 North Jackson in Salem. Completed surveys can also be mailed to the Salem Area Community Betterment Association office at P O Box 732, Salem, MO 65560. A survey similar to this was done back in 1994 by SACBA and developed into a five-year plan to guide the direction of the SACBA. Then a ten-year plan was developed with assistance of the MRPC in 1997 for the community with updates to the plan being done as some of the needs were addressed in 2000. The results of this survey will be shared with the community after they are compiled as they will assist with long-term planning and help the SACBA better meet the needs of the community in the future.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will be at Fatima tonight to face the Lady Comets with JV action starting at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. The Lady Tigers are 1-0 on the year.
The Missouri Basketball Tigers moved to 6-0 on the year with an 85-56 win over Stephen Austin Saturday night at the Mizzou Arena. Kalen Grimes scored 14 points to lead Missouri followed by Stefhon Hannah with 12 and Keon Lawrence with 11. Missouri will host Coppin State tonight at 6:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Chase Daniel threw for 356 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Missouri Tigers past the Kansas Jayhawks, 42-17, in a Big 12 Conference showdown at Faurot Field. Chase completed 26-of-38 pass attempts as the Tigers (8-4, 4-4 Big 12) snapped a three-game losing streak. Kansas (6-6, 3-5) quarterback Kerry Meier completed 8-of-15 passes for 99 yards with a touchdown. Jon Cornish had 126 yards and a touchdown as the Jayhawks saw their three-game winning streak come to its conclusion. Missouri racked up 493 total yards of offense while the Jayhawks had 322 total yards. Kansas struggled on third down as they converted on just 1-of-11 opportunities in the contest.
Marc Bulger and Kevin Curtis hooked up for a five-yard touchdown pass with 27 seconds remaining to lift the St. Louis Rams over the San Francisco 49ers, 20-17, at the Edward Jones Dome. Steven Jackson provided most of the offense, racking up 121 yards and a touchdown on the ground with nine catches for an additional 71 yards for the Rams (5-6), who snapped a five-game losing streak. Bulger ended 23-of-34 for 201 yards with a TD and an interception, while Isaac Bruce had six grabs for 63 yards.
Curtis Joseph stopped 25 shots to help the Phoenix Coyotes to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center Saturday night. Yanic Perreault and Owen Nolan each scored a goal for the Coyotes, who have won two of their last three games. Dan Hinote tallied the only goal and Curtis Sanford made 22 saves for the Blues, who failed in their bid to tally a season-high three-game winning streak. The Blues will face San Jose on Tuesday night at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

Funeral services for Yewul V. Wisdom, Sr. of Licking, formerly of Bunker, age 82 will be held this morning at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Corridon/Reynolds Cemetery.
Funeral services for Lloyd O. Cook of Salem, age 80, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Care Center.
Funeral services for Fern James of Vandalia, formerly of Salem, age 82, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Hepsoda Cemetery in rural Dent County.
Funeral services for Carolyn Sue Graves of Hillsboro are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
Funeral services for Geneva Jackson of St. Louis, age 92, are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
