The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Monday night at the district administrative offices boardroom. After approval of the agenda, Superintendent Steve Carvajal stated that Parent Teacher Conferences were held across the district the week of October 13^th and the district held a professional development day for certified staff on October 31^st. Teachers received professional development on teaching literacy across the content area and on the 8 mathematical practice standards. During the reports from the principals at the respective building, William Lynch Elementary reported that they held their 4^th PBS celebration of the year. The Salem Upper Elementary also celebrated PBS and had a total of 137 parents and students attend the Science Fair on November 4^th. The Salem Middle School congratulated their girl’s basketball teams for completing a highly successful season, and the 7^th grade boy’s basketball team for taking 3^rd place in the Cabool tournament. The Salem High School choir took 2^nd place at the SCA Festival in Willow Springs, and students named to the All-District Concert Choir were: Robert Gale, Austin Naber, and Trystan Welch. Students named to the All District Honor Choir were: Josiah Beckett, Natalie Leathers, Gabe Morton, Josh Sirois and Sydney Wood. There were four successful students this year with Mo Options and will graduate at the end of the year, and the Varsity Quiz Bowl finished 4^th in the Invitational Tournament. Matt James, CPA, was in attendance with the auditor’s report, which the Board did approve. The Board then approved setting the election filing dates beginning December 16^th and ending January 20, 2015, set graduation for May 22, 2015 at 7:00 pm, approved several policy changes based on state statutes and federal law changes and also approved the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan, known as CSIP. In old business, the Board approved the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s teacher evaluation model for certified staff. The Board then accepted the resignation of Amy Leach, junior high cheerleader sponsor and then voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel.

The counting period for the 2014 Thanksgiving holiday weekend is from 6:00 pm tonight until 11:59 pm on Sunday, November 30th. During the 2013 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, 11 people were killed and another 455 were injured in 1,195 traffic crashes. That means traffic crashes killed or injured one person every 13.3 minutes in Missouri over last year's Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The long Thanksgiving weekend allows Missourians to travel to see family, enjoy a mini vacation, or begin shopping for the upcoming holiday season. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds motorists that these activities may change traffic patterns, requiring everyone to be courteous, safe drivers. If you will be traveling this holiday, please make sure your car is in good condition before beginning your trip. It is also important that you are well rested before you start driving. Remember to buckle up, seat belts save lives! The Patrol will participate in Operation C.A.R.E (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during this Thanksgiving holiday weekend. As part of this operation, all available officers will be assigned to Missouri’s roadways to enforce traffic laws, especially those related to drunk driving, speeding, and seat belt/child restraint use. Troopers will also be assisting motorists as needed. Over the past several years, the Patrol has used special traffic enforcement projects to further their efforts to decrease traffic crashes and fatalities. This Thanksgiving weekend will include such an enforcement project, a 20-Mile Trooper operation, on November 26th and November 30th. Troopers will be assigned at 20-mile intervals along Interstates 29, 44, 55, and 70, as well as U.S. Highways 60 and 61.

The Salem Tiger basketball team opened up their season with a 29 point victory as they topped Desoto on Monday, 66-37. Kobe Mead led the Tigers in scoring with 18 points while Zayne Kyser followed with 12 points. The Tigers will play at Northwest on Saturday at noon.

The Salem Lady Tiger basketball team will open up their season on Saturday when the play at Northwest. That game is set to start at noon.

Raphael Davis scored 22 points on seven field goal attempts and Purdue crushed Missouri 82-61 in a consolation round game of the Maui Invitational. Johnathan Williams III and Keith Shamburger scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, for Missouri (2-3). The Tigers will play Chaminade today and you can hear it on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 1:00.

Alex Chiasson's goal with 41 seconds left in the third period tied the game, and Bobby Ryan was the only player to score in the shootout of Ottawa's 3-2 win over St. Louis. The Blues will host the Edmonton Oilers on Friday and will be in Minnesota on Saturday to face the Wild. You can hear both games on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.

The 17^th-ranked Missouri Tiger football team will host the Arkansas Razorbacks on Friday in their regular season finale. Missouri 9-2 on the year and 6-1 in the SEC. With a win on Friday, the Tigers will advance to SEC Championship game. You can hear Friday’s game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 12:30.

The St. Louis Rams will host the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, while the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Denver Broncos. The Rams are 4-7 on the year while the Chiefs are 7-4. Kickoff for the St. Louis game is set for noon, while the Kansas City game will be at 7:30 Sunday night.

Funeral services for Myla J. Kickbush of Rolla, age 86, will be held at 10:00 Wednesday morning at the First United Methodist Church in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Funeral services for Bradley P. Lovell of Salem, age 36, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to a charity of your choice.

Funeral services for Wanda French of St. James, age 72, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Interment will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Funeral services for Kevin Woods of St. Charles, age 46, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be at 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery, Steelville.

Funeral services for Marvin Wisdom of Salem, age 75, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Round Pond Cemetery. Memorails may be made to the Round Pond Cemetery.

Funeral services for Georgia Helen Martin of Boss, age 84, will be held at 2:00 on Sunday at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Project Win.

Graveside services and interment for Barbara Carroll of Steelville, age 95, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:30 at the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Community Childcare Center in Steelville of the Gibbs Care Center in Steelville. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville.
