The Dent County Fire Protection District will be hosting the 2012 Dent County Toy Drive. Toys are being collected from now through Monday, December 19th. Please make sure all toys are either new or just slightly used. If donating used items, please make sure all items are clean and in good working order. You can drop off your new or slightly used toys at the Dent County Fire Station, the Salem Police Department, Dollar General or the KSMO lobby. Monetary donations will be accepted in person at the Dent County Fire District or by mail to #2 South Main Street, Salem, MO 65560. Participants can sign up for the toy drive on Wednesdays, December 5th and December 12th from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at the fire station. Eligibility requirements include; proof of residency (electric bill, postmarked mail, etc), proof of children in the home (tax return, DFS printout, letter from school, etc), and proof of children’s date of birth (birth certificate(s)-printout from DFS). Participants will get a scheduled time for pickup of the toys at registration. Toys will be picked up on December 21st between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. Hunters shot 204,668 deer during the November portion of Missouri’s firearms deer season, topping the past four years’ harvests and confirming predictions by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). This year’s statewide November deer harvest is 7.7 percent more than last year and only 1.3 percent below the previous 10-year average. Top harvest counties during the season November 10th through the 20th were Howell with 4,037, followed by Texas with 3,916, and Benton with 3,756. MDC recorded five nonfatal and three fatal firearms-related hunting incidents during the 11-day November firearms deer hunt. Counties in southern Missouri had a strong harvest due to of a poor acorn crop. Local county harvests include: Crawford with 2,998, Dent with 2,672, Phelps with 2,118, Reynolds with 1,491, and Shannon with 2,360. Deer hunting contributes approximately $1.1 billion annually to the state and local economies and supports more than 12,000 jobs in Missouri.

The Salem Police has released several reports. On Monday, November 12th at 12:51, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of North Water in reference to a disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of an intoxicated 41-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was incarcerated on a 12-hour hold and issued a summons to appear in court. On Tuesday, November 13th at 11:33 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to Casey’s General Store in reference to a theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that a male driving a tan vehicle pumped $19.98 in fuel and left without paying. Later that afternoon at 3:45, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of North Hickory in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a birdhouse valued at $25 from the front yard of a residence. On Wednesday, November 14th at 11:35 at night, an officer was dispatched to the 300 block of South Hickory in reference to the occupants of a white Durango throwing eggs. The investigation revealed that two 18-year old females and a 17-year old male, all of Salem, had hit a number of vehicles with eggs. They were arrested for tampering, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. On Thursday, November 15th at 11:00 at night, an officer was dispatched to Burger King in reference to someone drinking alcohol on the premises. That investigation led to the arrest of a 32-year old Salem male for an open container. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Cortney Putman scored 22 points to lead the Salem Lady Tigers to a 62-43 win over the Northwest Lady Lions in their season opener on Saturday in Rolla. Putman grabbed eight rebounds while Kaytlyn Wells added 17 points and six rebounds. The Lady Tigers are now 1-0 on the year and will play Sullivan on Thursday.

Phil Pressey drained the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:18 on the clock as 13th ranked Missouri edged VCU, 68-65, on Saturday in the consolation game of the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament. Laurence Bowers scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Negus Webster-Chan added 12 points and five boards for the Tigers (5-1), who will play Appalachian State on Saturday.

Johnny Manziel threw for three scores and ran for a pair of touchdowns, as the ninth-ranked Aggies blew out Missouri, 59-29, in the final regular season game for both teams. Corbin Berkstresser finished 20-of-38 for a career-high 276 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception for Missouri (5-7, 2-6), which failed to become eligible for a bowl after losing three of its final four contests.

Janoris Jenkins returned two interceptions for touchdowns to carry the St. Louis Rams over the slumping Arizona Cardinals, 31-17, at University of Phoenix Stadium. Sam Bradford completed just 8-of-17 passes with an interception, but totaled 205 yards and two scores through the air for St. Louis (4-6-1), which had not won since October 4th. Steven Jackson amassed a season-high 139 yards on 24 carries in the win. The Rams will host the 49ers on Sunday.

Peyton Manning tossed a pair of touchdown passes and the Denver Broncos held off the reeling Kansas City Chiefs, 17-9, at Arrowhead Stadium. While Kansas City (1-10) played well defensively, the offense continued to struggle, as the Chiefs were unable to find the end zone all day in dropping their eighth straight contest. The Chiefs will play the Panthers on Sunday.

The NHL has cancelled the 2013 All-Star Weekend. The festivities were scheduled to be hosted by the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on January 26-27. The league also wiped out another wave of regular-season games, eliminating two more weeks through December 14th. The lockout, which began on September 16, has now caused the cancellation of 422 regular-season games.

Funeral services for Pearl W. McGrail of Salem, age 86, will be held today at noon at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Virgie Alvena Huston of St. James, age 88, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Walker Cemetery in Vichy. Memorials are suggested to the People First of Rolla.

Funeral services for Barbara Ann (Sinkora) Helm of Salem, age 70, will be held tonight at 6:00 at the New Harmony Church. Visitation will be from 5:00 until service time at the church. Memorials may be made to the family of Barbara Helm. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Letha Mahurin of Salem, age 89, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Marcel Dozier of Salem, age 52, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
