The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their meeting Thursday evening. After approval of the agenda and communications, the Board was updated on the building project. The track will open tonight with a Glo Run beginning at 5:30 pm. Roofs have all been fixed, and the roof on the Junior High gym is good for about 3 to 6 months, but will need to be redone on three sides due to previous construction that was not done correctly. All the windows at the Junior High are done and matching blinds will be up next week. Both new additions are still on course for completion by mid May 2014. Parent/Teacher conferences went well and Professional Development Day was held on Friday, November 1st. Students at the William Lynch Elementary have completed several projects and fund-raisers and will enjoy their 10th PBS party Tuesday, as they will picnic in their classrooms for lunch. At the Upper Elementary 115 students participated with Science projects in Science Fair and the 5th and 6th graders will have a Christmas play in December. The Salem Junior High will have a Career Day from 11:50 am to 2:30 pm today with presenters or nearly 50 careers to speak to the students and give them a glimpse into their occupation and a Turkey Trot will be held on November 26th. The Salem Senior High wanted to congratulate Haley Cason for making the All-State Choir and she will perform January 25th at the state music conference. Four students scored 30 or higher on the October ACT test. The Varsity Quiz Bowl team recently took 2nd place at the Invitational Tournament and the Junior Varsity Quiz Bowl team took 1st and 2nd place. Blue and White night will be held Tuesday, November 26th and the regular basketball season will start on Saturday, November 30th. The Salem College Advisor Rebecca Fryer updated the Board on the various ways that she is working with Seniors and the Juniors in preparing for college now, such as their FAFSA, applications for grants, etc and there will be a parent/guardian financial night on January 28th. Three seats will be open on the Salem R-80 Board of Education, and the filings dates begin on December 17th and end on January 21st. Graduation has been set for Friday, May 16th at 7:00 pm. The Board then updated MSBA 2013B policy regarding sexual harassment that must be reported within 24 hours to the Children's Division of the Department of Social Services. And by a unanimous vote, the Board approved not to change anything in midstream as far as the current contractor and management company for the building projects. The Board then voted to go into executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel. 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released a couple of arrest reports. On Tuesday, November 12th at 10:20 in the morning, 58-year old Sylvia Gulley of Salem was arrested in Dent County for failure to wear a seat belt and no insurance. She also had a warrant from Ellington PD for no insurance. Gulley was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond. On Wednesday, November 13th at 7:00 in the evening, 26-year old Nicky Stringer of Salem was arrested in Dent County a felony Dent County warrant for larceny, a felony Crawford County warrant for a probation violation, and a misdemeanor Salem PD warrant for disorderly conduct. She was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on no bond.

Henry Josey ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns to help 8th ranked Missouri move one win away from an SEC East title with a 24-10 decision over 24th-ranked Ole Miss on Saturday. James Franklin threw for 142 yards with an interception on a 12-of-19 completion rate, but the Tigers' ground game and defense played the biggest roles in Missouri's third triumph over a ranked conference opponent this season. The Tigers clinch a spot in the SEC Championship Game if they defeat Texas A&M on Saturday.

The Missouri Tigers used an impressive second half shooting effort to pull away late, as they toppled the visiting Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 72-63 Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Arena. Earnest Ross led the way for the tigers with 17 points while Jordan Clarkson added 14. Missouri will host the IUPUI Jaguars tonight and you can hear it on KSMO starting at 6:30.

Brian Elliott stopped 34 shots and six different players hit the back of the net, as St. Louis eased past Dallas, 6-1, at Scottrade Center Saturday night. The win was No. 621 for head coach Ken Hitchcock, who moved past Bryan Murray into eighth on the all-time list. The Blues will host Minnesota tonight at 7:00 and KSMO will join the game in progress following the Missouri game.

Benny Cunningham, Zac Stacy, and Tavon Austin each tallied a rushing touchdown and the St. Louis Rams accounted for 258 yards on the ground in their 42-21 victory over the Chicago Bears. Cunningham carried the ball 13 times for 109 yards, while Stacy added 87 yards on 12 totes for the Rams (5-6), who will play the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday at 3:05.

Seyi Ajirotutu's 26-yard touchdown catch with 24 seconds left gave the San Diego Chargers a 41-38 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Alex Smith passed for 294 yards and three touchdowns for the Chiefs (9-2), who have lost two in a row after going 9-0 to start the season. The Chiefs will host the Denver Broncos this Sunday at 3:25.

The St. Louis Cardinals have traded third baseman David Freese and relief pitcher Fernando Salas to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for outfielders Peter Bourjos and Randal Grichuk. Bourjos is a career .251 batter with 24 home runs, 18 triples and 89 RBI in 354 games. He has stolen 41 bases in 54 attempts, including a career- high 22 in 2011. The right-handed hitting Bourjos is considered to be a Gold Glove caliber defender, having made just seven errors in over 2,500 innings played.

The Cardinals have also signed free agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta to a four-year deal. Peralta, 31, batted .303 with 11 homers, 30 doubles and 55 RBI for the Detroit Tigers in 2013. He also served a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal. Peralta is a career .268 hitter with 156 homers, 295 doubles and 698 RBI in 1,383 games with Cleveland and Detroit.

The Kansas City Royals signed free-agent pitcher Jason Vargas to a four-year contract on Thursday. Vargas went 9-8 with a 4.02 earned run average in 24 starts for the Angels last season. He missed almost two months in his lone campaign with Los Angeles after having surgery to remove a blood clot in his left armpit.

Funeral services for Leon Seneker of Salem, age 86, will be held today at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Clarence Purcell of Salem, age 66, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Akers Cemetery.

Funeral services for Janis Ann Carter of Salem, age 65, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Bunker Tabernacle. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service at the Bunker Tabernacle. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial services for Donna Hedley of Salem, age 71, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:30 in the morning until service time. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Ozarks Regional YMCA Strong Kids Scholarship Fund or a charity of your choice.
