An accident occurred at 6:55 Sunday evening in Dent County on Highway 32 about four miles east of Salem that took the life of California woman and two of her young grandsons from Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Toyota driven by 60-year old Wilma Shaffer of Bangor, California, was traveling northbound on highway 32. The Toyota was pulling onto highway 32 and pulled into the path of an eastbound 2000 Chevrolet pickup driven by 65-year old Richard Brown of Edgar Springs. The Chevrolet struck the driver’s side of the Toyota. The driver of the Toyota, Wilma Shaffer as well as passengers 6-year old Johann Hickernell and 9-year old Joe Hinkernell were all pronounced dead at the scene by Dent County Coroner Gina White at 7:20 pm. Other passengers in the Toyota, 10-year old Jack Hinkernell and 7-year old Jeremiah Hinkernell suffered serious injuries and were flown to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis by Air Evac. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Toyota was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The Chevrolet sustained moderate damage and was removed by the owner. 

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damages, thefts, domestic disturbance, an active warrant, and traffic violation. On Tuesday, November 17th at 6:45 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 700 block of South Pershing in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed person or persons unknown damaged three yard light fixtures valued at $75.00 Later that morning at 10:04 a.m. an officer was sent to the 900 block of West Hobson in reference to property damage. Investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke the glass of a door on a commercial building that belongs to Bank of Salem and valued at $200. Further on that afternoon at 3:04 p.m. an officer was dispateched to a residence on Redbud in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a gold “Next” boys bicycle valued $85.00 from the yard of a residence. On Wednesday, November 18th at 5:36 p.m. an officer was sent to the 1100 block of South Gertrude in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation of the report revealed a 27 year-old male of Salem had assaulted a 27 year-old female of Salem. Further investigation led to the arrest of the male who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that evening at 6:55 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed a 32 year-old male of Salem had reportedly taken 22 prescription oxycontin pills from a purse at a residence in the 600 block of South Jackson. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. On Thursday, November 19th at 12:20 p.m. an officer made contact with a 20 year-old female of Salem who had an active City of Salem warrant. She was taken into custody and later released on $1,000 bond. Later that night at 11:47 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 28 year-old male of Salem for driving while intoxicated. The suspect was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. The Salvation Army Service Unit of Dent County would like to announce that this year’s Christmas kettle campaign would begin on Wednesday, November 25th and run every weekend until Saturday, December 26th.  The kettles will be located at Wal-Mart, Country Mart and Dollar General. Counter Kettles will be placed at various locations around Dent County. The 2010 goal is $21,000 and, with the continuation of a local mail appeal and the hundreds of volunteer hours donated by individuals, businesses and clubs to ring the bell at the Christmas kettle, The Salvation Army is hopeful that local citizens will support this campaign generously as they have in the past. This year Progressive Ozark Bank VP/Market Manager, Scott Shults will serve as the Honorary Christmas Campaign Chairman and would like to thank everyone for their donation of money, time, or both during the Christmas season to help make a brighter 2010 for those less fortunate. The funds raised during this campaign will be used to assist the citizens of Dent County with utility assistance, and prescriptions.  The Salvation Army also supplies local school children with backpacks, and provides assistance to families who have lost everything due to a fire. The generosity of the citizens of Dent County will enable the local Salvation Army to continue to meet the needs of those who need assistance in 2010. University of Missouri senior linebacker Sean Weatherspoon (Jasper, Texas) has been named one of five finalists for the Butkus Award, which goes annually to the nation’s top collegiate linebacker. Weatherspoon ranks 3rd on Mizzou’s career tackles list. The 2009 winner will be named on December 8th.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers take their 2-0 record into the game tonight against Chattanooga as part of the South Padre Invitational. You can hear the game on KSMO radio starting at 6:30 with the pre-game show.

Milan Lucic's score late in the second period proved to be the winner, as Boston doubled up St. Louis, 4-2, at Scottrade Center. Keith Tkachuk and Carlo Colaiacovo netted a goal each for the Blues, whose two-game win streak was halted. Chris Mason took the loss after yielding all four goals on just 23 shots. The Blues will be in Dallas tomorrow night and in Nashville Friday night. Both games can be heard on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger will miss the next three-to-six weeks with a broken tibia suffered in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals. Kyle Boller will now start for the Rams, with Keith Null serving as the backup.

Funeral services for Lola E. Mason of Salem, age 98, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Betty A. Shipley of Salem, age 76, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 9:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Baker Cemetery in Marble Hill. Memorials are suggested to the Shipley Family.

Funeral services for Wilma June Shaffer of Salem, age 60,will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem.

Funeral services for Joseph Edward Hickernell age 9 and Johan Sebastion Hickernell age 6, of Salem, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem.  

Funeral services for Nancy Irene Gapsch, of Anuut, age 69, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Jim Hewkin of Cuba, age 77, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. John Untied Church of Christ Cemetery, Bern Mo.

Funeral services for George Keener of Salem, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
