On Monday at 1:40 in the afternoon, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department was notified that a deer hunter off of Highway BB had located what appeared to be skeletal remains of a human. The Sheriff’s Department responded and was led to a wooded area near where the Chevy Blazer belonging to Jeremy B. Blanchard had been found the latter part of the week before. Upon investigation of the scene and evidence located there, it was determined the cause of death was an apparent suicide. Located were a shirt, pants and sandals which fit the description of items worn by Jeremy B. Blanchard at the time he was last seen. A wallet containing identification belonging to Blanchard was also located. Blanchard had been missing since July 2nd. Assisting the sheriff’s office in the investigation were the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Salem Police Department and the Dent County Coroner. Dent County Coroner Eddie Wilson pronounced the death of 32-year old Jeremy Blaze Blanchard at 3:50 pm on November 20th.
The body of 53-year old Guy Raymond Schmitz of Salem was found at 2:30 Monday afternoon by family members in the woods off the end of Highway EE on Dent County Road 522. Dent County Coroner Eddie Wilson pronounced Schmitz dead at 3:00 pm in the woods on Fiebelman property on Dent County Road 522. Schmitz had not had contact with his family in 24 plus hours. Dent County Coroner Eddie Wilson determined the cause of death was an apparent heart attack after killing a deer off Dent County Road 522.
The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire on Tuesday, November 21st at 2:32 in the morning in the 400 block of East Second Street in Salem. Upon arrival, firefighters found the structure fully involved. The fire started on the northeast corner of the house but cause of the fire is unknown at this time and it was a total loss. The Dent County Fire Protection District received mutual aid from the Montauk and Jadwin Fire Departments. A total of seven firefighters responded to the call.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting last evening. Controller Stephanie Wofford reported that the summary of operations for the month of October showed an excess of revenues over expenses of $155,247 for the month and a year to date total of $244,943. Director of Nursing, Carol Lacy, gave statistics for the month of October. There were 777 emergency room visits, 169 ambulance runs, 27 surgeries, 242 home health visits, 7,381 lab tests, 1,120 radiological procedures, 21 MRI scans, 121 dialysis procedures visits and 23 mammograms were performed. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that the hospital auxiliary will have their Christmas Bazaar in the hospital library on December 1st from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and have their home tour on December 3rd from 1-4 pm. Tickets for the Home Tour can be purchased at any local bank and the offices of Edward Jones for $6. There are 5 stops on the tour. Pryor gave the Chief of Staff report for Dr. Yvonne Prince. The board approved the Chief of Staffs recommendation to allow active staff privileges to Dr. Sherry Turcotte and courtesy staff privileges to Dr. Ryan Pharr. Joe Hayes, Chairman of the physicians office building committee, recommended that the building be constructed with two completed and two uncompleted offices at a cost of $931,500. A USDA loan through Intercounty Electric will be sought in the amount of $750,000. This loan would be at zero interest for ten years. Pryor announced that the employee holiday dinner will be held on December 4th at the City Hall and the joint Board of Directors and medical staff dinner will be held on December 11th at Holiday Inn Express. In the strategic planning committee meeting, there are three potential doctors being recruited to come to SMDH. They include Ryan Pharr, DO, Angela Casteel, DO and Paula Lindner, MD. The board approved selling an obsolete Acuson Ultrasound Unit to Diagnostic Equipment sales for $1,501. Pryor announced that election filing would begin on December 12th at 8 AM and continue through January 16, 2007. The seat currently held by Joe Brand will be up for re-election. The board then went into closed session.

Jordan Davis scored 18 points and Cody Wofford added 12 more as the Salem Tigers jumped out to a 24-8 first quarter lead taking advantage of missed Steelville shots and beat the Cardinals, 60-44. Steelville was led in scoring by Stephen Hille with 17 points and Heath Turnbough with 12 points. Salem is now 1-0 on the year and they will be in the Farmington Tournament next Wednesday afternoon against Jackson starting at 5:00.
The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers started out their season on a high note as they blasted Viburnum Monday night, 62-32. Kirsten Stephens had 27 points to lead the Tigers followed by Natalie Howard with 16. Salem will travel to Fatima on Monday night with the JV game at 6:00 followed by the varsity action.
The St. Louis Blues will be in Columbus tonight to face the Blue Jackets starting at 6:00 on KSMO. The Blues will then be in Detroit Friday night to face the Red Wings at 6:30 before coming home on Saturday night to play Phoenix. You can hear these games on KSMO.
The Missouri Football Tigers close out their regular season on Saturday against Kansas with the game starting at 11:00. Missouri enters the game with a 7-4 record, but have lost 4 of their last five even though Big 12 officials admit they blew a call last weekend against Iowa state that would have given Missouri the win. The undefeated Missouri Basketball Tigers will face Stephen Austin University Saturday night at 6:00 with the pre-game show starting at 5:30. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Guy Raymond Schmitz of Salem, age 53, will be held Friday at morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be 9:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Guy Schmitz family.
Funeral services for Donald Barton of St. James, age 81, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the United Methodist Church in St. James. Visitation will be held Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James with Masonic services at 7:00. Interment will be in the Haskell County Cemetery in Kansas with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the New Organ Fund at the United Methodist Church and Shriner’s Hospital.
