The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that working with a small crew, he would have a crew out picking up old tires on Dent County Roads 6370, 6410 and 5015. He also said there would be a man stockpiling rock at the Road and Bridge Department for future use. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported he also was working with a small crew, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2590 and one man would be stockpiling rock as well. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to express his desire for everyone to have safe travels for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and to also stop a moment and be thankful for all that you have. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that work continues on budgets. There will be no Commission meeting on Monday, November 24^th due to Commissioners attending the Missouri Association County Conference. There also will be no meeting due the Dent County Courthouse being closed in observance of Thanksgiving on Thursday and Friday. The next meeting will be Monday and it is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of October. During the month, they wrote three equipment repair orders, 29 summons to appear in court, 17 warning tickets, and 26 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 15 accidents, three assaults, three burglaries, two reports of disorderly conduct, one report of domestic assault, three reports of domestic violence, seven reports of driving while intoxicated, one report of driving while revoked and/or suspended, two reports of endangering the welfare of a child, one report of forgery, and one report of a minor in possession of intoxicants. The department also investigated two reports of open beer and/or liquor containers, six reports of property damage, 15 reports of stealing, one report of unlawful possession of a firearm, one report of unlawful use of a weapon, one report of tampering, one report of trespassing and one 96-hour commitment. They also investigated two reports of possession of amphetamine, one report of possession of barbiturate, two reports of possession of benzodazephine, three reports of possession of marijuana, one report of possession of opium or derivative, five reports of possession of drug paraphernalia, one report of possession of synthetic drugs and one report of selling amphetamine drugs. The Salem Police Department also conducted two reports of sudden death. The police department received 1,727 calls for service during the month, handled 146 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 80 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 22 hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff and spent 20 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in October included 18 calls for escorts, four calls for an intoxicated driver, two calls for a prowler, four calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, seven intoxicated pedestrian calls, 16 calls for domestic disputes, and eleven calls for a wrecker. There were seven 911 calls, eight calls for peace disturbances, five calls for alarms sounding, six calls for fights in progress, 11 ambulance assist calls, one call for drag racing and/or speeding vehicles, two fire calls and seven calls for property damage.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,406 miles and arrested 23 males and 16 females during the month of October.

Native trees, shrubs, and woody vines can help improve wildlife habitat and soil and water conservation while also improving the appearance and value of private property. The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) George O. White State Nursery near Licking offers Missouri residents a variety of native seedlings for reforestation, windbreaks, erosion control, as well as for wildlife food and cover. The State Nursery provides mainly one-year-old bare-root seedlings with sizes varying by species. Seedlings are available in quantities of 10, 25, or 100 per species. Prices for seedling quantities range from $6-32 per bundle. Receive a 15-percent discount up to $20 off seedling orders with a Heritage Card. Orders can be placed until April 15, 2015. Orders will be shipped or can be picked up at the State Nursery from February through May. Quantities are limited so order early. Seedlings varieties include pine, pecan, oak, dogwood, tulip poplar, cottonwood, sweetgum, cypress, birch, hickory, willow, persimmon, pawpaw, deciduous holly, redbud, wild plum, ninebark, witch hazel, serviceberry, mulberry, elderberry, and many others.
