The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices. After the consent agenda, Superintendent Steve Bryant reported that the parent teachers conferences on October 26
th and 27
th went very well, and that the teachers utilized their professional development day on November 3rd. Bryant updated the board that the contract has been sent to Gentry Construction of Houston for the Upper Elementary School Building addition and renovations with a completion date stipulation to be finished before the start of school next year. The board heard the auditor’s report and the school finances were sound with the only negative aspect being that the district does not segregate the duties of the office personnel that would prohibit the possibility of embezzlement or fraud. The auditor does state that this is common with smaller districts as they just can’t afford to have that many office personnel. The board heard program evaluations on the library and media centers, special education, federal programs and parent education. The board approved revising the board policy BBE, and agreed to interview the three persons who have submitted their name as a replacement for Mark Nash who has resigned from the board due to his moving from the district. The board set the election filing dates from 8:00 AM on December 12th to 4:00 on January 16th. The office will be closed on December 25th, 26th and January 1st. Reduced office hours from 8:00 – 3:00 will be in effect from December 22nd through January 2nd. The two three-year terms up for election are those of Wade Jadwin and John Boyle, and the unexpired term of Mark Nash will also be up for election for one year. The board selected William Van Ronzelen, IV as the MSBA Belcher Scholarship representative with April Hafner the first runner-up. The board accepted the resignations of C.J. Seals as the Senior High Yearbook instructor effective immediately, and William Lynch Elementary Principal Mrs. Ginger Joyner effective at the end of the 2006-2007 school year. The district will open up the William Lynch principal position for applicants within the district until November 27
th, and they will interview finalists at the December board meeting. Interested staff will need to contact Assistant Superintendent Cindy Rumpf for details. The board then went into closed session where they employed Phyllis Freeman in upper elementary food service, and employed Jeannie Shipman as the Senior High Yearbook instructor. The meeting was then adjourned.
An accident happened Saturday morning around 8:45 in Phelps County on a private drive on Route JJ about 11 miles north of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2002 Bombardier ATV driven by 45-year old Brenda Dunning of Salem, was backing rapidly out of a garage when the vehicle overturned on top of Dunning. Dunning suffered serious injuries and was taken by the St. James ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. The vehicle sustained minor damage.
The Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting tonight at the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, the board will hear bids for inspecting the 150,000-gallon water tower at the water department. In unfinished business, a decision on joining the Missouri Public Utility Alliance will be made before the board will hear reports from each alderman. Alderman Jim McDaniels would like an update on the par grant inspection, receive an update on the installation of the emergency generator at the city hall auditorium, get an update on the street signs, get an update on the water and sewer lines on Third Street and discuss miscellaneous items. Alderman Bill Riley wants to discuss amending a city ordinance and also discuss miscellaneous items. Aldermen Mike Whitley and Jim Jackson will also discuss miscellaneous items. Under new business, the board will set the dates for filing for the next municipal election for one west ward and one east ward alderman. Offices are for two-year terms and applicants must be at least 21 years of age, be a US citizen and live in the ward they want to represent. The dates for filing will be from December 12th starting at 8:00 and last through January 16th at 5:00. There is a $25 filing fee. The board will then discuss setting the salaries for the alderman. Currently, each alderman receives $100 per meeting. The board will then approve the bills before going into closed session to discuss personnel, real estate or litigation. The meeting tonight is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will travel to Viburnum to face the Lady Jays starting at 6:00 with the JV game with the varsity contest to follow.
The University of Missouri agreed to terms with head football coach Gary Pinkel on a new five-year contract on Friday. Mizzou started the season 6-0 for the first time since 1973 and will play in a third bowl game in the past four years under Pinkel. He is 36-33 at MU and owns a 109-70-3 overall record in 16 seasons.
Ryan Kock was all over the field, rushing for 179 yards on 32 carries, finding the end zone twice, as the Iowa State Cyclones downed the Missouri Tigers 21-16 at Jack Trice Stadium. Bret Meyer completed 15-of-27 passes for Iowa State (4-8, 1-7 Big 12), on his way to 153 yards passing. Chase Daniel connected on 29-of-44 passing attempts, racking up 310 yards passing and one touchdown. Tommy Saunders led Missouri (7-4, 3-4) with seven receptions and 72 yards.
Matt Lawrence poured in a game-high 22 points in leading the Missouri Tigers to an 81-75 win over the Davidson Wildcats in non-conference action from Mizzou Arena. Lawrence finished the game 8-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-10 from long range, as the Tigers (5-0) are now off to their best start since the 2002-03 season. Stefhon Hannah added 20 points and six steals in the win, while Leo Lyons had 18 points and eight boards off the bench.
DeAngelo Williams ran for 114 yards and Mike Rucker had two sacks, including one for a safety, to lead a Panthers defense that held St. Louis to just 111 yards of offense, as Carolina came away with a 15-0 win over the Rams at Bank of America Stadium. Marc Bulger ended 19-of-34 for 142 yards with an interception for St. Louis (4-6), which has lost five in a row.
Larry Johnson rushed for 154 yards on 31 carries with a pair of touchdowns and rookie Jarrad Page intercepted a potentially game-winning pass in the end zone, as the Kansas City Chiefs held off the Oakland Raiders, 17-13, at Arrowhead Stadium. Trent Green returned to the field to complete 9-of-16 passes for 102 yards for the Chiefs (6-4), who have won four of their last five. Michael Bennett rushed for 43 yards on three attempts, and Samie Parker caught three balls for 44 yards.

Funeral services for Gracie A. Barksdale of St. James, formerly of Salem, age 93, will be held today at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 this morning until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Raymond W. Moreland of Vichy, age 82, are incomplete, but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary.
