An accident occurred at 9:30 Wednesday morning in Crawford County on Highway 8 about 13 miles east of Steelville that took the life of a Steelville man. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Chevy Cavalier driven by 22-year old Matthew Rodebaugh of Steelville was traveling westbound on Highway 8. Rodebaugh lost control of the Cavalier on the rain-covered roadway. The Cavalier traveled off the left side of the roadway, down an embankment, struck a concrete culvert, went airborne and struck several trees and then overturned ejecting the driver. Coroner Paul Hutson pronounced Rodebaugh dead at the scene at 10:14 am. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevy Cavalier was totaled and removed from the scene by Miles Towing.

An accident happened at 7:05 Wednesday night on Highway 49 about a mile south of Dillard in Crawford County. According to the highway patrol report, 21-year old Charles Mennemeyer of Viburnum, driving a 2003 Ford Taurus northbound, lost control on wet pavement and skidded off the left side of the roadway and struck an embankment. Mennemeyer suffered moderate injuries and was taken by the Iron County Ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Mennemeyer was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident and the Taurus was totaled and removed from the scene by Abney’s Towing of Viburnum.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the minutes from the October 22nd meeting, Administrator Dennis Pryor will update the Board on the Auxiliary report, hospital activity calendar and legislative issues. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will then give the summary of operations and statistics reports for October along with the nursing services and ancillary service reports, followed by the Chief of Staff report. During old business, the Board will discuss the SMDH video, there will be a strategic planning update, an annual bylaw review and the Board will discuss the hospital lagoon. The Board will also address the joint Board of Directors and Medical Staff dinner to be held on December 10th and employee holiday and awards dinner being held on December 11th. In new business the Board will discuss the election filing that begins December 15th and ends January 19th, as there is a 6-year term in District 3 and the remainder of a 6-year term in District 2. The Board will then address hospital purchases and may then vote to go into closed session. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Dent County Health Center has received a large shipment of H1N1 vaccine and can now offer it to the public. Both the H1N1 shot and the H1N1 FluMist are available at the walk-in clinic to be held today from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. For more information call the Dent County Health Center at 729-3106. The vaccine will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular monthly meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda including the minutes from the previous meeting along with bills, the food service report, the attendance report and substitute list, Superintendent Steve Bryant will address communications followed by the Parent/Teacher conferences and Professional Development Day. Bryant will also give a facility update, a PTO/William Lynch playground update and address student recognitions and accomplishments in his reports. In new business, there will program evaluations on the library/media centers, special education and parent education along with an 8th grade PLC Team simulation of a PLC meeting. The Board will then address the MSBA/MASA annual conference report, set board election filing dates and address the selection of the MSBA Belcher Scholarship recipient. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel and discipline. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public. 

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Saturday, November 7th at 08:00 a.m. the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to the 1200 block of Gertrude Street due to an electrical fire. Upon arrival a total of five firefighters found there was nothing showing. After further investigation the fire was a faulty light. There was no damage and the scene was brought under control at 08:28. On Monday November 9th at 10:17 p.m. the fire district personnel was paged out to set up a landing zone at the fire station. A total of 5 firefighters responded to the call. On Tuesday November 10th at 4:57 p.m. the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to Highway 19 north due to a motor vehicle fire. Upon arrival, eight firefighters found the vehicle was fully involved. The cause of the fire is unknown. On Saturday November 14th at 02:51 a.m. the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to assist a Salem ambulance with a patient. A total of six firefighters responded to the call. On Sunday November 15th at 8:39 p.m. the fire district was paged out to Highway 68 North due to a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, seven personnel assisted the Salem ambulance with three patients. The scene was under control at 9:15 p.m.

The Salem Fall Athletic Banquet will be held tonight at 6:30 at the Salem High School Cafeteria starting at 6:30. The banquet will honor varsity and JV football, softball, volleyball and cross country participants as well as the cheerleaders.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Phoenix Coyotes tonight starting at 7:00 at the Scottrade Center. The Blues have lost seven of the last eight games. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The National League Cy Young Award Winner will be announced today. Yesterday, Colorado’s Jim Tracy was named the NL Manager of the Year with Tony LaRussa coming in second.

St. Louis Cardinals have added pitchers Tyler Norrick, Adam Ottavino and Francisco Samuel, catcher Bryan Anderson, infielder Mark Hamilton and outfielders Allen Craig, John Jay and Daryl Jones to the 40-man roster.

Funeral services for Carl W. Keeney of Salem, age 73, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Miner Cemetery in Salem. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Memorial services for Angel Domonic Liam Ritchhart will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

Funeral services for Brenda Harrison of St. James, age 62, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Edwin Wayne Coffman of Salem, age 64, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Coffman Family.

Funeral services for Betty Louise Derrick of Salem, age 80, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Veterans Plot of Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
