The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices boardroom. Superintendent Steve Bryant reported that the parent-teacher conferences went well with the bulk of the conferences being held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and then teachers had that Friday off. There were several program evaluations including instructional effectiveness, the library and media centers, curriculum, instruction, assessment, measurable learner objectives and an overview which all corresponded with the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) and how they inter-relate. Bryant emphasized and wanted reported that the CSIP has five over-arching, broad goals. Number One, Salem R-80 will develop and enhance quality educational and instructional programs to improve student performance and enable students to meet their personal, academic and career goals. Number Two, Salem R-80 will recruit, attract, develop, and retain highly qualified staff to carry out the LEA (local educational agency) district mission, goals, and objectives. Number Three, Salem R-80 will provide and maintain appropriate instructional resources, support services, and functional and safe facilities. Number Four, Salem R-80 will promote, facilitate, and enhance parent, student, and community involvement in LEA District educational programs. And Number Five, Salem R-80 will govern the LEA District in an efficient and effective manner providing leadership and representation to benefit the students, staff, and patrons of the district. The CSIP will be posted online at www.salem.k12.mo.us for the next month for all to view. Comments from teachers, staff as well as others are welcome. The Board will then vote on the CSIP at next months meeting. Mrs. Jenkins gave program evaluations on Special Education, Federal Programs and Parent Education. Currently in the Salem R-80 school district there are 219 in the Special Services program. Jenkins also emphasized the importance of the Federal Programs and the importance of Parent Education and involvement in the schools. The Board voted to appoint Doug Walter as the Salem R-80 School Foundation Chairperson. The election filing dates were set to be during normal business hours 8:00 to 4:00 and will begin on Tuesday, December 18th and run through 5:00 pm on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. Greg Stevens, Steve Watson and Jimmy Williams hold the three terms ending in April. The Salem R-80 Board will be closed on Monday December 24th, Tuesday December 25th and Tuesday January 1, 2008. The Salem R-80 Board holiday hours will be from 8:00 to 3:00 beginning Friday December 21st through Wednesday January 2, 2008. The Board voted to accept the two-week resignation of Cheryl Shelton that began November 12th as the Jr. High Special Ed Para-Professional. In Closed Session, the BOE selected Luke Heithold as the Salem R-80 recipient for the MSBA John Belcher Memorial Scholarship.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00. After the approval of the consent agenda, in unfinished business, the Board had postponed any decision concerning the closing of a 20’ alley in Grover’s Addition, Block “A” that had been requested by Ed & Gail McElfresh until the Board could look at the situation. Alderman Bill Riley, Mike Whitley, Jim McDaniels and Jim Jackson would like to discuss miscellaneous items involving the city. McDaniels would also like to discuss the soccer fields, the Al Brown fields, a water problem on West Hunt and West Fourth and trash in the streets. Mayor Gary Brown will then give his comments on various items involving the City of Salem. During the Introduction and reading of bills, Bill #3111, an ordinance repealing certain provisions of Chapter 3 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Salem relating to the Salem Airport and providing for new provisions to said Chapter 3. This Ordinance was requested by the Board to establish the duties and responsibilities of the Airport Board. In new and miscellaneous business, Mike Perry of Sullivan Publishing will appear before the Board to clarify and answer questions concerning the codification of the City’s Code Book. Gary Penrod will appear before the Board to discuss the possibility of the City using his company, Insituform Technologies USA, Inc. to rehabilitate sanitary sewers, storm sewers and force mains. The City of Salem will hold a Municipal Election on April 8th, 2008 for the purpose of electing one West Ward Alderman, one East Ward Alderman, and a mayor. After the approval of bills, the Board of Alderman will go into closed session to discuss personnel, real estate and litigation.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will host the Viburnum Lady Blue Jays tonight starting with the JV contest at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow at the Salem High School Gym.
Jeremy Maclin caught a pair of touchdown passes and returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score, leading sixth-ranked Missouri to a 49-32 victory over Kansas State. Maclin finished with a school-record 360 all-purpose yards and set a Football Bowl Subdivision freshman record for most all-purpose yards in a season with 2,309 yards, shattering the old mark of 2,026 set by Rutgers' Terrell Willis in 1993. Chase Daniel completed 28-of-41 passes for 284 yards with four touchdowns for Missouri (10-1, 6-1 Big 12), which has won five in a row and will now play Kansas for the Big 12 North Division title next week in Kansas City. The Jayhawks remained unbeaten on the season with a 45-7 win over Iowa State Saturday.
Brad Boyes scored the lone goal of the shootout and also tallied one in regulation as the St. Louis Blues defeated the Nashville Predators, 3-2, at the Sommet Center. David Perron also scored for the Blues, who have won three straight after dropping the previous three. Toivonen stopped 35 of 37 shots in the victory in the opener of the home-and- home series. The Blues face Nashville again tonight at 7:30 on KSMO.
Adam Vinatieri atoned for a pair of earlier misses by hitting a 24-yard go-ahead field goal with three seconds remaining to give the Indianapolis Colts a 13-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at the RCA Dome. Brodie Croyle, in his first start under center for Kansas City, completed 19- of-27 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown. The Chiefs (4-6) have dropped three in a row following a 4-3 start.
Marc Bulger completed 21-of-32 passes for 155 yards and the only touchdown in the game, helping lead the St. Louis Rams to a 13-9 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Torry Holt caught the touchdown, and had seven total receptions for 55 yards, as the Rams (2-8) are on a two-game winning streak after losing the first eight games of the season. Steven Jackson ran 23 times for 92 yards, and Jeff Wilkins made two field goals in the win.
Missouri Basketball beat Southern Friday night, 95-50 and will face Michigan State tonight in the O’Reilly Classic starting at 8:30 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Evelyn Hilgedick, formerly of Salem, are incomplete at this time. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
