The Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners will hold a public meeting tonight at 5:30 p.m. followed by the regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman at 7:00 pm. in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington. At the planning and zoning meeting, there will be a discussion of re-occupancy permits and application process as well as a review of the city limit boundaries. The Salem Board of Aldermen will then conduct their meeting. After approval of the agenda and during the hearing of persons, Willis Stagner wishes to discuss the fence around the old County Cemetery on Lough Lane, and Gale England and Dan Salyer are requesting the vacated portions of East Ellis Street that adjoins Salem Heating & Cooling and DJS Rental, LLC be deeded to them. In unfinished business, City Administrator Clayton Lucas will report on his findings concerning the employee’s health insurance and how it would affect the budget. Mr. Jerry Craig will then report on the Planning & Zoning Commission meeting held earlier it the evening. Lucas will also report of various projects in the City before Mayor Gary Brown will then give his report. In new and miscellaneous the City will hold a municipal election April 8, 2014 for the purpose of electing a Mayor, and one West Ward and one East Ward Alderman. Filings will begin at the City Administrative Offices on Tuesday, December 17th at 8:00 am and run until Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 5:00 pm. A $25.00 filing fee is required. The Board will also discuss the salaries for the newly elected officials before the filing date. Lucas will then present bills for over $3,000 and the Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing contracts. The meetings of the City of Salem Board of Alderman and Planning and Zoning Board of Commissioners are open to the public.

An accident happened at 4:20 Thursday afternoon in Iron County on Highway 32 about a mile north of Bellview. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Dodge Neon driven by 18-year old Tiffani Webb of Bixby was traveling eastbound. The Dodge Neon ran off the right side of the roadway, Webb overcorrected and ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting Webb. Webb suffered moderate injuries and was taken by Air Evac to St. John’s Mercy in Creve Coeur. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge Neon was totaled and was towed from the scene by Adams Custom Auto.

An accident occurred Friday morning at 1:12 in Phelps County on Highway 8/68 about a mile and a half east of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2009 Nissan Frontier driven by 62-year old Terry Jones of Salem was traveling eastbound and struck a deer. Jones suffered minor injuries and was treated by the St. James ambulance and released. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Nissan sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene.

The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Sunday, November 3rd at 2:26 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the Walnut Motel in reference to a disturbance. That investigation revealed that an intoxicated 53-year old Salem male was beating on the door of a room and creating a disturbance. He was placed under arrest for peace disturbance, issued a summons to appear in court, and released to the Southwest Behavioral Health Center. On Monday, November 4th at 5:52 in the evening, an officer responded to the 200 block of North Grand in reference to a male that had touched a female inappropriately. The investigation led to the arrest of a 53-year old Salem male for 1st degree sexual misconduct and 3rd degree assault. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Wednesday, November 6th at 11:49 at night, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 19-year old Salem male on an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. He was incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Thursday, November 7th at 1:13 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Phil-Mart on Highway 19 in reference to shoplifting. That investigation revealed that a 32-year old Salem male picked up a bottle of vodka, valued at $8.53, and left the store without paying. On Friday, November 8th at 10:54 in the morning, an officer was detailed to Casey's General Store located on East Highway 32 in reference to a theft of fuel. The investigation revealed that a male driver of a black Chevrolet Cavalier pumped $10 in fuel and left without paying. At 11:05 the same morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone entered a red 2001 Ford truck parked in the 1300 block of West Third and took hunting related items valued at $610. Then at 11:31 the same morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to fraudulent use of a credit card. The investigation revealed that a credit card was used by another to make unauthorized purchases totaling $72.01. Later that afternoon at 3:16, an officer was dispatched to the Fourth Street Mall in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone stole a Craftsman ratchet valued at $20. On Saturday, November 9th 10:15 in the morning, an officer responded to the Gas Plus Convenience Store located on East Highway 32 in reference to a theft of fuel. The investigation revealed the driver of a gold Toyota Corolla pumped $17.96 in fuel and left without paying. Anyone with any information regarding these reports is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

Led by 23 points from Jabari Brown, the Missouri Tigers defeated the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, 92-80, in non-conference action at the Sprint Center. For the Tigers (3-0), Jordan Clarkson added 13 points, Earnest Ross scored 12 points and Tony Criswell chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds. Missouri is now off until Saturday when they host Gardner-Webb.

Alex Steen picked up the game-winning goal early in the third period, as St. Louis took down Carolina, 4-2, on Saturday. Roman Polak, David Backes and T.J. Oshie also lit the lamp for the Blues. On Sunday, Alex Ovechkin scored twice while Braden Holtby made 46 stops as the Washington Capitals took a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Blues. Vladimir Sobotka scored the only goal of the game for the Blues, who had won five of six coming into the game. The Blues will play the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.

The final undefeated team has fallen. And that means two clubs are tied atop the AFC West. Peyton Manning threw a touchdown pass, Montee Ball ran for two scores and the Denver Broncos posted a 27-17 win over Kansas City, denying the Chiefs their first 10-0 start in team history. Alex Smith had two touchdown passes for Kansas City (9-1), which was coming off its bye. The Chiefs will play the Chargers Sunday.

Funeral services for Wilda Beamon of St. James, age 79, will be held today at 11:00 at the First Assembly of God Church in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Assembly of God Church or MDA. All arrangements are under direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Melvin L. Givens of Jadwin, age 77, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery.

Funeral services for Harley Orin Turner of Vienna, formerly of Salem, age 71, will be held Friday at 1;00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 in the morning until service time Friday. Interment will be in the Rector Cemetery in Shannon County.
