The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning.  At the meeting Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that conditions are too wet for grading. Both District 1 and 2 have received numerous reports about trees and debris in roadways and crews would be clearing those out today. Dent County Clerk Janet Inman reported that the clerk’s office took phone bids for unleaded gas and #2 diesel for the Road and Bridge Department. Hocker Oil Company was awarded the bid for 1,000 gallons of unleaded gas at $1.855 per gallon and MFA was awarded the bid for a transport load of #2 diesel at $2.051 per gallon. At the previous meeting Tom Stehn with MoDOT attended the meeting to ask the Commission if he could be of any assistance to the county. Commissioner Tune asked about the approach from Dent County Road 438 and Commissioner Simpson asked about the approach to Dent County Road 508 and how those could be made safer. Stehn said an agreement would have to be made between the county and state before any action could be taken. Tune also said the sight distance at the intersection of Routes C and O in Anutt needs to be addressed, the bridge on Route H west of Route DD, and the Standing Rock Bridge on Highway 19 South need to be widened. MoDOTs 2007 through 2011 Scoping and Design Projects for highway and bridge for Dent County include; improvements on Highway 32 from Route P to Highway 72 South and on Highway 32 from Route AC in Dent County to Route DD in Iron County, shoulder construction and partial relocation from Dent County Road 605 to Route F, improvements on Spring Creek Bridge on Highway 32 East, Dry Fork Bridge on Route NN and Dry Fork Bridge on Route H.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce held their Annual Awards Banquet Thursday evening at The Commons Youth Building to name the 2006 Teen of the Year, Citizen of the Year and present the Lifetime Achievement Award. Karen Pace awarded the “Teen of the Year” Award to Luke Heithold while State Representative Jason Smith awarded the “Citizen of the Year” award to Gail Gravely for her work at the Senior Citizen’s Center. Bob Parsons, one of last year’s “Lifetime Achievement Award” winners, named the winner of the 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award and it went to Bill Bond for his work with the Lion’s Club and the Christmas Toy Drive.

Congratulations to these individuals on their accomplishments. The silent auction held at the banquet raised $2,407, and the entertainment for the evening was Richard Vickers with selections from his “Elvis Lives” performance.

The Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main in Salem, will have a special holiday display titled, “Trees and Trains”, from November 18th through December 23rd. They will be introducing an exciting new Christmas display with over 20 decorated Christmas trees and trains of various eras. It will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Motor vehicle crashes on interstates occur all too often. This has prompted Missouri to join other states in taking action to reduce the severity of these accidents by installing median guard cable. Most recently, guard cable was installed in the median of Interstate 44. Research in states where guard cable has been in place for some time has shown its ability to reduce the likelihood vehicles will cross the median and enter travel lanes on the other side of the road. Guard cable has been found superior to more expensive, traditional concrete or metal barriers. According to the Federal Highway Administration, guard cable is more forgiving and reduces the forces transferred to passengers inside the vehicle. Commanding Officer Captain Randy Becker Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Rolla, wants to remind motorists on Interstate 44 and any Missouri road should be aware that they are responsible for damage to guard cable when their vehicles come in contact with it. When more than $1,000 in property damage goes unreported due to the driver leaving the scene, it is considered a felony.

Funeral services for Loretta Kay Simily of Brunswick, Maine, age 61, will be this morning at 10:00 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.

Graveside services for Daisy Cooksey of St. Louis formerly of Salem, age 86, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
