The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5600 and 6420 while materials were going to be added to Dent County Road 4210. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that he had one man hauling brown rock in from the creek and another man screening gravel. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the MRPC Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner last Thursday in Hermann, Missouri. The commissioners discussed a request to extend the real estate contract on the piece of property at 5th Street and Iron that the county is purchasing to make into a parking lot. The property was to be ready for a commissioner walk-through by November 15th and the request was to extend the contract for the walk-through to be held on December 15th. The new closing date would be December 20th. The commissioners signed the extension. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated that she and the commissioners would be attending the Missouri Association of Counties Conference in Jefferson City from Sunday, November 18th through Tuesday, November 20th so there will be no meeting of the commissioners on Monday. She also wanted to remind everyone that the Dent County Courthouse would be closed on November 22nd and 23rd for Thanksgiving. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be held on Monday, November 26th at 9:00 at the courthouse and it will be open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released several reports. On Tuesday, November 5th at 8:04 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Dent County Veterinary Clinic in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a cash drawer and $175 from a cash register. On Tuesday, November 6th at 3:30 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 21-year old St. James female for stealing merchandise valued at $16.88. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, November 7th at 6:45 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the Casey’s General Store located on South Main Street in reference to a theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that the driver of a white or silver passenger car pumped $30 in fuel and left without paying. On Thursday, November 8th at 11:30 at night, an officer responded to a residence in the 300 block of East Third in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone had forcibly entered a residence and took a television set valued at $1,200. On Friday, November 9th at 10:44 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took vases valued at $100 from the porch of a residence. That same morning at 11:54, an officer was dispatched to the Dent County Animal Shelter in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took an iPod valued at $200 from inside the building. That afternoon at 1:30, an officer responded to the 700 block of South Pershing in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took three solar lights and a concrete mushroom valued at $45 from a flowerbed of a residence. Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster announced that Missouri would receive more than $2 million as part of a $90 million consent judgment with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) LLC to resolve allegations that GlaxoSmithKline unlawfully marketed its diabetes drug, Avandia. Koster and 36 other Attorneys General allege that GlaxoSmithKline misrepresented Avandia’s cardiovascular risks and safety profile. Koster said GSK marketed its drug by touting certain safety benefits when GSK did not have competent and reliable scientific evidence to substantiate these representations. As part of the Consent Judgment, GlaxoSmithKline agreed to reform how it markets and promotes diabetes drugs. The consent judgment requires GSK to pay $2,075,691.24 to the Missouri Merchandising Practices Fund.
The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Monday, November 5th at 7:11 in the evening, 12 firefighters were dispatched to the junctions of Highway 32 and 72 for emergency medical services. All units were back in service at 8:54. That same evening at 8:16, 9 firefighters were dispatched to the 900 block of West Third Street for fire extinguishment of a smoking flue. All units were back in service at 8:46. On Wednesday, November 7th at 9:47 in the evening, 7 firefighters were called to County Road 5015 for fire extinguishment of a 2009 Chevy Silverado. All units were back in service at 10:50. On Thursday, November 8th at 5:34 in the morning, 7 firefighters were sent to the Salem Memorial District Hospital to investigate the cause of smoke that was found in a blower motor malfunction in the wall heater near the cafeteria. All units were back in service at 6:47.

The Salem Tiger Benchwarmers will be hosting a Blue/White Night on Saturday at the Salem High School Gym. Doors open at 4:30. Events will include a chili supper and a bake sale. Starting at 5:00, the girl’s and boy’s basketball teams from 7th through 12th grade will be introduced and showing their skills. Bring water and/or sport drinks as your admission to the event. The Salem Tiger Benchwarmers is a Booster Club for the basketball teams. Booster Club t-shirts will also be available. The 14th ranked Missouri Tiger basketball team will host Nicholls State tonight. Mizzou is 2-0 on the season and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio, starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.
The Missouri Tiger football team will be playing Syracuse in non-conference play on Saturday. Both teams are 5-5 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 5:00.
The St. Louis Rams will be hosting the New York Jets Sunday. The Kansas City Chiefs will also be home, as they will host the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday. The Rams are 3-5-1 on the year and the Chiefs are 1-8. Both games start at noon.
Left-hander Brian Fuentes, who pitched 12 Major League seasons for six teams, has decided to retire. Fuentes, 37, pitched for the A's and Cardinals this past season. He was released by Oakland and appeared in only six games for the Cardinals before asking for a leave of absence because of family issues. A four-time All-Star, Fuentes led the Majors with 48 saves in 2009. He finishes his career 26-43 with a 3.62 earned run average and 204 saves.

No services will be held for Robert Fleeman of Salem, formerly of St. Louis, who passed away Friday at the age of 68 years. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
