The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual awards banquet Thursday night at the Youth Building in The Commons. Selected as the 2007 “Teen of the Year” was Katie Hunt for her dedicated involvement with school and church commitments. Ed Carmack was then presented the 2007 “Citizen of the Year” for his dedicated service to the Crisis Center of which he has been president for nearly 20 years. The “Lifetime Achievement Award” was presented to Meredith Craig for her many years of “behind the scenes” work on the Salem Library Board, Sheltered Workshop Board and her volunteer work with the SACBA Teacher’s Closet. Congratulations to the winners and all the nominees!
The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 508, 551, and 624 and the rest of the District 1 crew would be doing repair work on the crusher. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 309, 312, 330,and 529 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 220. Tune also had to step down from the Restitution Fund Board of Trustees, because of a revision to Senate Bill 22. The bill now states that no current or former county employee may serve on the board. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles appointed Dave Nichols to replace Tune. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the county will be receiving $222.50 per voting precinct for the 2008 election year. The money is available through the Help America Vote Act and will help pay for poll worker training. Curley and Commissioner Skiles also reported that they would be attending the Missouri Association of Counties meeting this Sunday through Tuesday at the Lake of the Ozarks. Also at the meeting, Tom Vanhatten, Chairmen of the 100 Acre Road Rally, stopped by to let the Commission know that the road rally is scheduled for February 22nd and 23rd and will run the same course as last year. At the previous meeting, the Commission took bids from Erb Equipment and Fabick for a wheel loader; the Commission voted to accept Fabick’s bid of $15,000 for two years. Tom Haines from the National Forest Service came in and updated the commissioners on the area east of Salem where the F-15 plane went down two weeks ago. Haines said that the work is progressing nicely and the area could be open again in about a week if work continues at the current pace. The next meeting of the Board of Commissioners is Monday at 9:00, and is open to the public.
The Conservation Commission approved staff recommendations for the sale of an estimated 3,312,753 board feet of timber located on Logan Creek Conservation Area in Reynolds County. The Commission also accepted a donation of approximately .125-acre tract of land in Franklin County as an addition to Reiker Ford Access and they will exchange 11 acres of Pilot Knob Conservation Area in Stone County for two acres of land adjacent to Pilot Knob Conservation Area. The owner of the two-acre tract will pay the difference in value of the two tracts. The Commissioners also suspended numerous hunting and fishing privileges for those people who have been caught poaching or violating other rules and regulations.

The Salem Football Tigers placed nine players on the All-SCA teams. Named to the All-SCA First Team for Salem were linebacker Jordan Thompson, defensive lineman Landie Oliver and offensive lineman Andy Flett. Named to the All-SCA Second Team were running back Max Ball, linebacker Cody Wofford, lineman Brady Adams, defensive back C.J. Smith and offensive lineman Vince Jackson. Yousef Ibrahim was named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention team as a running back. Congratulations Tigers!!!
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers placed three girls on the All-SCA Teams. Named to the First All-SCA Team was Allison Jones, named to the Second All-SCA Team was Hannah Kettner and Kristy Bermudez was named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention Team. Congratulations ladies!!!
It will be a full day of basketball Saturday at the Salem High School Gymnasium as the annual Blue and White scrimmages will be held. The seventh graders will start the night out at 5:00 followed by the 8th grade boys at 5:30. The 9th graders will then play starting at 6:00 with the varsity and JV girls hitting the floor at 6:30 followed by the boy’s varsity and JV at 7:00. Admission is a sport’s drink or bottled water than can be used by the players during the season.
The Missouri Basketball Tigers will be back in action as they host Southern tonight at 7:00 at the Mizzou Arena. Missouri is 2-0 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO stating at 6:30.
The St. Louis Blues will honor former defensemen Al MacInnis on being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame tonight prior to the game with Columbus. MacInnis was inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame Monday night in Toronto after being selected in his first year of eligibility. KSMO will join the game in progress tonight after Missouri Basketball. The Blues will then travel to Nashville on Saturday to face the Predators at 7:00. You can hear that game on KSMO.
The Missouri Football Tigers will take their 9-1 record and #5 AP ranking into the game tomorrow with Kansas State. Game time is set for 11:30 and you can hear the contest on KSMO Radio.

Memorial services for Jerry “Tiny” Dixon of St. James, formerly of Eminence, age 55, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 Saturday morning until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Dixon Family.
Memorial services for Lura Boyd Musgraves of Katy, Texas, formerly of Salem, age 87, will be held Saturday, at 1:00 at the Mt. Hermon Methodist Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services for Michael D. Crocker of Hazelwood, age 49, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Saturday. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Michael Crocker family.
Funeral services for Loretta Faye Rider of Salem, age 61, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
Funeral services for Geneva Gladin Hilderbrand, of Salem, age 83, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
Funeral services for Shirley Ann Sapaugh of Salem, age 64 will be held Monday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
