The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular meeting tonight beginning at 7:00 PM in the district administrative offices boardroom. The agenda will consist of approval of the minutes from the previous meeting along with approval of bills, the food service report, the attendance report and the substitute list followed by all communications. Superintendent Steve Bryant will discuss the parent-teacher conferences along with professional development day and will give a UE building addition and renovations update in his reports. New business to be addressed will be the auditor’s report along with several program evaluations. They will also consider a revision of the BOE policy BBE, review and select BOE candidate applicants for interview, set the board election filing dates and there will be the selection of the MSBA Belcher Scholarship recipient. The board will then adjourn and go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and discipline. The regular meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

Today has been designated as “Winter Weather Awareness Day” by the National Weather Service and numerous state agencies. People should use this day to review the hazards and safety rules of winter weather so that they can be prepared for the upcoming winter season. Winter storms and extreme cold cannot be stopped, but lives can be saved by being prepared. The NWS will transmit winter weather safety information on the NOAA Weather Wire Service and over NOAA Weather Radio during this day and during the week. SEMA will send out information to local emergency managers and public safety directors across the state. Extreme cold temperatures are a big danger during winter months in Missouri. Prolonged exposure to the cold can cause frostbite, hypothermia, or in extreme cases death. In fact, excessive cold is one of the leading weather-related causes of death across the country. Infants and the elderly are most susceptible to extreme cold. The Department of Health Senior Services (DHSS) reports that the deaths for the winter of 2005-2006, 20 deaths occurred from November 2005 - March 2006. Since the DHSS surveillance program began in 1979, there have been 416 hypothermia related deaths in Missouri.

The Salem Chamber of Commerce has announced that the theme for this year’s 2006 Christmas Parade of Lights is “Let It Snow”. The parade will be held on Saturday, December 2nd and will begin at 5:30 pm. Entries for the Christmas Parade of Lights are being taken from now until November 28th. Don’t forget that ATV’s and dirt bikes are no longer allowed to be in the parades. To get your entry in for the Christmas Parade be sure and go by the Chamber office located at 200 South Main or for more information you can even call the Chamber office at 729-6900.  

The Dent-Phelps R-3 PTO will hold their annual “old time” chili supper and basket/pie auction tomorrow at the school. The doors open at 5:00 with dinner at 5:30 and the auction at 6:00. Everyone is welcome!

The monthly older adult library program will meet Tuesday morning at 10:00 in the Library meeting room to discuss “The Day Kennedy Was Shot” and what you were doing on that day. Refreshments will be served and it is free!

SCA conference awards were voted on Tuesday night for football and volleyball. In volleyball, named to the All-SCA First Team was Kirsten Stephens with Hanna Kettner named to the All-SCA Second Team. Allison Jones and Ellie Nothaus were named to the All-SCA Honorable mention team. Named to the All-Region and All-District Teams were Kirsten Stephens and Allison Jones. Congratulations Lady Tigers!!!

In Football, named to All-SCA First Team were offensive lineman Justin Hanger, punter Billy Jackson, defensive end Nathan Friend, and linebackers Daniel Decker and Mike Sullivan. Named to the All-SCA Second Team were running back Billy Jackson, offensive lineman Vince Jackson, offensive lineman Andy Flett, defensive lineman Adam Pace, defensive lineman Ryan Thompson and defensive back Cass Jones. Honorable Mention All-SCA Team members include quarterback Matt Whitaker, wide receiver Soloman McNeal and defensive back Jared Kirker. Congratulations Tigers!!

The Missouri Basketball Tigers will host Libscomb tonight at the Mizzou Arena starting at 6:30 with the pre-game show. Missouri is 3-0 on the season going into the contest that you can hear on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced that center fielder Jim Edmonds underwent right shoulder surgery on Wednesday. Dr. George Paletta performed arthroscopic debridement of the AC joint and labrum in Edmonds' non-throwing shoulder. Edmonds will begin rehab in a week and should be ready for opening day.

The St. Louis Blues continue their long road trip in Edmonton tonight starting at 8:00. KSMO will join the game in progress at the conclusion of the Missouri-Libscomb game. The Blues did recall goaltender Jason Bachashua to replace the injured Curtis Sanford.

Funeral services for Iva Jean Havens of Doolittle, age 80, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Olive Baptist Church

A funeral mass for Paul Frederick Smith of Bixby, age 85, will be held today at noon at the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary. Interment will be in the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lumes C. Turner of Bixby, age 93, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Crocker/Stricklin Cemetery in Bixby.

Funeral services for Loretta Kay Simily of Brunswick, Maine, age 61, will be Friday at 10:00 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery, under the direction of James and Gahr.

Graveside services for Daisy Cooksey of St. Louis formerly of Salem, age 86, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
