An accident happened in Iron County on Iron County Road 85 about a third of a mile west of Highway 49 at 12:54 Wednesday afternoon that took the life of woman from Boss. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Kia Sportage, driven westbound by 48-year old LaDonna Waller of Boss, traveled off the right edge of the roadway. Waller then overcorrected and traveled off the left side of the roadway where the Sportage overturned, ejecting Waller from the vehicle. Iron County Coroner Tony Cole pronounced Waller dead at the Quad County Ambulance Shed at 2:00. Waller was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Kia Sportage was totaled and removed by Abney’s Wrecker. The body was released to the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum.

An accident occurred on Wednesday at 6:55 in the morning in Crawford County on Highway 19 about two miles south of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Saturn driven by 20-year old Lauren Bourbon of Viburnum went off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. He suffered moderate injuries and was transported by the Steelville Ambulance to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. The Saturn sustained extensive damage and was towed by Miles and Sons Towing.

The Salem Hospital Home Health Agency has once again received the TOP 100 Home Care Elite Award and has achieved that award for the last five years in a row. The Salem Hospital Home Health Agency received one of three awards that were given in the State of Missouri with the other two awards being awarded in the St. Louis area. The award is based on three areas, which include; improvement in patient outcomes, improvement in process measures and financial performance. The services provided are: skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, home health aide and speech-language pathology. The Salem Hospital Home Health Agency began back in July of 1985. The City of Salem Board of Alderman had scheduled a Special Meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington for tonight beginning at 6:00 pm. The Special Meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday, November 29th beginning at 6:00 pm. The Board of Alderman will be reviewing the recommended changes to the City of Salem’s Municipal Code as provided by Sullivan Publications. That meeting is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular monthly meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal will address the parent-teacher conferences and professional development day. In new business, the Board will discuss CIA, set the Board election filing dates, set graduation date and approve the auditor’s report. During old business there will be the selection of Energy Service Companies (RFP). The Board will then adjourn and move into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing student issues. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The National Weather Service (NWS) along with the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) are promoting Winter Weather Awareness this week and are offering these tips for winter safety and preparation. Maintain at least a half tank of gas during the winter season. Prepare a winter emergency kit for your vehicles, which should include; a shovel, windshield scraper and a small broom, a flashlight, a battery powered radio, extra batteries, water, snack food, matches, extra hats, socks and gloves or mittens, a First Aid Kit with a pocket knife, any necessary medications, blanket(s), a tow chain or rope, road salt or sand, booster cables, emergency flares, and a distress flag. Drive only if it is necessary, in the day, don’t travel alone, and keep others informed of you schedule and route. Stay on the main roads and avoid back roads. In the State of Missouri remember to call the Highway Patrol Emergency Assistance number at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone to report traffic crashes, crimes being committed, or other emergencies on Missouri’s highways.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol released their arrest reports for Dent County. On Friday, November 9th at 10:03 in the evening, 26-year old Shyla Decker of Salem was arrested on a felony warrant out of the Wright County Sheriff’s Office for fraud. She posted bond and was released. On Tuesday, November 13th at 11:20 in the morning, 72-year old Ralph Ryder of Salem was arrested on a Texas County warrant for a traffic offense. He is being held in the Dent County Jail on bond. On Wednesday, November 14th at 12:40 in the afternoon, 24-year old Kenneth Dixon of Salem was arrested on a felony Phelps County warrant for possession of a controlled substance. He is being held in the Dent County Jail on no bond. Later that evening at 5:17, 67-year old Lenley Schofield of Salem was arrested on a felony Dent County warrant for driving while intoxicated. He is being held in the Dent County Jail on bond. At 6:13 that evening, 42-year old Ronnie Barton of Salem was arrested and charged with a felony driving while intoxicated, felony distribution of heroin, felony possession of hydrocodone with intent to distribute, and felony 1st degree endangering the welfare of a child. He is being held in the Dent County Jail on no bond. A little later at 6:31, 48-year old William Phillips of St. Louis was arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and put on a 24-hour hold.

The Salem Tiger Benchwarmers will be hosting a Blue/White Night on Saturday at the Salem High School Gym. Doors open at 4:30. Events will include a chili supper and a bake sale. Starting at 5:00, the girl’s and boy’s basketball teams from 7th through 12th grade will be introduced and showing their skills. Bring water and/or sport drinks as your admission to the event. The Salem Tiger Benchwarmers is a Booster Club for the basketball teams. Booster Club t-shirts will also be available. A Mass of Christian Burial for Trudy Hammack of Rolla, age 92, will be held this morning at 10:00 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Otterville, Mo. at 3:00 pm. Memorial are suggested to the St. Jude’s Children Hospital.

Funeral services for Norman E. Short will be held this morning at 11:30 at the Macedonia Baptist Church near the Boss Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:30 until time of service. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Virginia Bertha Helton of Salem, age 84, will be held tonight at 7:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 5:00 until service time. Graveside services will be Friday at 11:00 at the New St. Marcus Cemetery in St. Louis.

Funeral services for LaDonna Marie Waller of Boss, age 48, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Viburnum Chapel. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 Friday. Interment will be in the Barton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Barton Cemetery.
