The Salem Quiz Bowl Team took home second place trophies in both varsity and junior varsity divisions in their season opener at Norwood on Saturday, November 6. Salem has a large team this year. Returning seniors include varsity captain Lane Howard, Tarynn Huitt, Ashley Greenshields, and Kayce Webber. Seniors new to the team are Liz Snyder, Angie and Amy Tiefenthaler, Stetson Hanning, Kevin Presley, and Whitney Hayes. Juniors returning this year include Rachelle Hayes and Sarah Elliot. New juniors to Quiz Bowl are Madison Auten, Rabiatou Sylla, Jalaa Abu Arab, and Sara Young. The Quiz Bowl team has two sophomores this year and both are new players: Jacob Gale and Dakota O’Donnell. Freshman players this year are Tucker Connelly, and Daniel Schultz.  Tryouts are still being conducted and any new players will be considered. The teams are coached by Susan Sheeley and Wanda Nickles. 

An accident occurred at 4:45 Saturday morning in Dent County on Route H about one mile east of Phelps County. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Chevrolet driven by 75-year old Merle Burks of St. Louis, was traveling west on Route H. The accident occurred as the vehicle ran off the right side of the road, struck a curve sign, traveled up an embankment and overturned, coming to a rest on its top. Burks was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident but the status of his injuries was unknown. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing. 

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight starting at 6:00 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers. In hearing of persons, John Maledy will discuss a problem he has with the airport hanger fees. Bids will then be reviewed for a used pickup for the City. In a public hearing to be held about 6:30, Sacred Heart Catholic Church will request the rezoning of #1 South MacArthur Avenue from residential to commercial. They will also discuss a Conditional Use Permit for counseling and medical therapy at the same address. Immediately following the public hearing, there will be a public meeting discussing the same subject. After the consent agenda, Ben Bryson, Secretary of the Airport Board, will give his report from the meeting held on November 4^th. Sean Curley, Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Board, will then give his report on the meeting held at the Aldermen meeting. Mayor Gary Brown will give his public works report. In new business, filling dates for the April Aldermen election will be discussed and the Board will review the salaries for newly elected officials. City Clerk Mary Happel will then present bills for approval and the Board may vote to go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Thanks to efforts of Dean Garber, Wallis Oil Co Inc. DMG Petroleum located at 1103 South Main Street in Salem; Salem Junior High has been awarded a $750 ExxonMobil Education Alliance grant for the purchase of textbooks. Funded by the ExxonMobil Corporation, the ExxonMobil Alliance program is designed to provide Mobil retailers like DMG Petroleum with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through educational grants to neighborhood schools.

An accident happened Sunday afternoon at 5:04 in Maries County on Highway 63 about 8/10ths of a mile south of Route A. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Jeep Cherokee driven northbound by 90-year old Gertrude Hammock of Rolla, crossed the centerline and struck a 1997 Ford F-250 driven by Jason Wright of Wright City. The Jeep then went down an embankment and struck several trees. Hammock suffered serious injuries and was flown to the University Hospital in Columbia. The Jeep was totaled and removed from the scene by C&C Towing, while the Ford sustained only minor damage and was driven from the scene.

Blaine Gabbert threw for 208 yards with two touchdowns and ran for another score, as 20th-ranked Missouri outlasted Kansas State, 38-28, in Big 12 action. Gabbert completed 17-of-25 passes and was intercepted once, and also rushed for 89 yards for Missouri (8-2, 4-2 Big 12), which had suffered losses at Nebraska and Texas Tech coming into the contest. T.J. Moe chipped in with five catches for 36 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the victory.

Ray Whitney posted the hat trick and recorded a season-high five points as Phoenix got past St. Louis, 5-3. Andy McDonald scored a goal and picked up a pair of helpers for the Blues, who have dropped three in a row. David Backes and Brad Boyes also tallied, but Ty Conklin was dented for four goals on only 26 shots in defeat. The Blues will be at Colorado tonight to face the Avalanche starting at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Blues rewarded forward David Backes with a five-year contract extension on Friday. The 26-year-old Backes is in his fifth NHL season after the Blues made him the 62nd overall pick in the 2003 draft. He has two goals and four assists in 14 games this season.

Kyle Orton threw for a career-high four touchdowns and 296 yards on 22-of-34 efficiency, as Denver cruised to a 49-29 victory over AFC West rival Kansas City at Mile High Stadium. Matt Cassel completed 33-of-53 passes for 469 yards and four touchdowns for the Chiefs (5-4), while Dwayne Bowe recorded his seventh career game of more than 100 yards receiving by putting up 186 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Jamaal Charles had 121 all-purpose yards and a touchdown catch for Kansas City, which has dropped four of its last six games after starting 3-0 and was coming off a 23-20 overtime loss to Oakland. The Chiefs will host Arizona Sunday.

Joe Nedney hit a 29-yard field goal with 9:39 left in overtime and Troy Smith threw for a career-high 356 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-28 passing, as the San Francisco 49ers took a 23-20 victory over the St. Louis Rams at Candlestick Park. Sam Bradford threw for 251 yards and one score on 30-of-42 passing, and Steven Jackson rushed for 81 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown for the Rams (4-5), who have lost two of their last three. The Rams will host Atlanta Sunday afternoon.
