Tonight at 6:30, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual Awards Banquet at The Commons where the 2007 Citizen of the Year, Teen of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards will be named. Chamber Vice-President Dustin Howard will be the emcee and the entertainment will be provided by Jarred Brown. Nominated for the 2007 Teen of the Year Award are Jenna Homeyer, Katie Hunt and Ellie Nothaus. For the 2007 Citizen of the Year Award, nominated were Ed Carmack, Bobbie Culver and Phil Newcom; and nominees for the Lifetime Achievement Award are Jim and Diane Boulware, Meredith Craig and Jo Ann Wells.
Senator Frank Barnitz announced that district legislative assistant Wilma Rowden of Vienna would continue her listening posts in November at locations throughout the 16th Senate District. Rowden will be in Rolla at the Phelps County Commissioners meeting this morning from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Those who cannot make it to the listening posts can contact Rowden in the district at (573) 201-6207.
The Conservation Department issues more than 600 First Deer and First Turkey certificates every year. Any hunter age 15 or younger who kills his or her first deer or turkey can get a certificate. The Conservation Department’s First Deer/Turkey Program gives participants free commemorative certificates suitable for framing. If the application includes a photograph of the hunter and his or her first deer or turkey, the photo is incorporated into the certificate. The tangible recognition of young hunter’s achievements provides permanent reminders that can either substitute for or complement a taxidermist’s mount. Hunters checked 10,857 turkeys during Missouri’s 2007 fall firearms turkey season, the lowest number in more than 20 years. This was the third year that Missouri’s fall firearms turkey hunt spanned the entire month of October. The harvest fell 1,070 or 9 percent short of last year’s. Top harvest counties were Laclede with 252 turkeys checked, Franklin with 247 and Wright with 224. The Missouri Department of Conservation recorded one firearms-related fall turkey hunting accident.
Captain Randy L. Becker, commanding officer of Troop I, Rolla, announces Troop I’s involvement in the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s special traffic safety campaign. Entitled, “I’m saving lives. Help Wanted.” This campaign’s focus is on safety and reducing the number of traffic fatalities in Missouri. In 2006, Missouri led the nation when it experienced a 13 percent decrease in traffic deaths for that year. Current statistics indicate traffic deaths continue to decline. Thus far in 2007, 12 percent fewer people have been killed on Missouri roadways compared to the same time period in 2006. The Patrol has adopted a goal of less than 1,000 traffic fatalities in 2008. The key message of the “I’m Saving Lives. Help Wanted.” campaign is that troopers are saving lives on Missouri’s roads, and we want motorists to help in our effort. Motorists can help by wearing your seat belt, pay attention when you’re driving, avoid drinking and driving, obey the speed limit and be a courteous driver. Currently, the new “Help Wanted” bumper stickers are being placed on Troop I MSHP vehicles to promote the campaign. This new campaign will not affect the “Move Over” campaign. The Patrol will still enforce the “Move Over” law and promote compliance through educational programs, PSAs, and news releases. The “Help Wanted” campaign will work in conjunction with the “Move Over” campaign. Posters promoting the “Help Wanted” campaign and safe driving will be displayed at Troop I Headquarters. The Missouri State Highway Patrol urges motorists to continue to do their part to reduce traffic fatalities. Help us keep the fatality numbers moving in the right direction. Missourians can help further make the roads safe by reporting dangerous drivers by calling the Patrol’s Emergency Report Line at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers will host Southern tomorrow night at 7:00. Missouri is 2-0 on the year. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 6:30.
The St. Louis Blues will be off until tomorrow night when then host the Columbus Blue Jackets and will be Al MacInnis Hall of Fame Night. Game time is slated for 7:30 and KSMO will join the game in progress after Missouri Basketball.

Funeral services for Alexies Licklider Marshall of Ironton, formerly of Steelville, age 57, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Interment will be in the Hibler Cemetery in Steelville.
Funeral services for Violet Mae Conway of Cook Station, age 83, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Carr Cemetery in Cook Station.
Funeral services for Carmen Ann Horning of Salem, age 54, will be held today at 1:00 at the North Wood R-4 Gymnasium. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be private. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
