Hunters checked 69,614 deer during the opening weekend of Missouri’s November firearms deer season. The Missouri Department of Conservation says weather was the most significant factor affecting the number of deer checked. This year’s opening-weekend harvest is 22 percent below last year’s figure. Windy, unseasonably warm weather on Saturday limited deer movement, making them less available to hunters. Wind and rain on Sunday probably kept many hunters indoors or huddled around campfires, further limiting the opening weekend harvest. Top harvest counties during the opening weekend were Howell with 1,464 deer checked, Texas with 1,435, and Wayne with 1,430. Totals for deer checked so far in our area during the 2012 fall firearms season include 1,515 in Dent County, 1,655 in Crawford County, 1,161 in Phelps County, 833 in Reynolds County, 1,388 in Shannon County, and 2,295 in Texas County. Deer hunting is a treasured cultural tradition and a significant factor in state and local economies. Missouri’s more than 500,000 deer hunters spend more than $690 million directly related to deer hunting each year. These expenditures generate more than $1 billion in business activity and support more than 12,000 Missouri jobs. Besides putting food on the table and encouraging healthful outdoor recreation, deer hunting is an indispensable tool for regulating Missouri’s deer population. By keeping deer from becoming overpopulated, hunters reduce the potential for deer disease outbreaks and minimize deer-vehicle accidents and damage to crops and other property. Because more than 90 percent of land in Missouri is privately owned, MDC works with private landowners to ensure good deer management and maintain healthy deer populations. MDC recorded one nonfatal firearms-related hunting incident during the opening weekend.
Nonprohits in the Lake Ozark-Rolla region of Missouri have received grants totaling $210,000 from Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH). Grant funding supports nonprofit organizations that work to improve the health of thousands of Missourians. The local grants are part of a $3.2 million round of funding recently approved by MFH’s Board of Directors. MFH made a grant to each of the public health departments in our area, which include; Crawford County Nursing Service and Health Department in Steelville, Dent County Health Center in Salem, and the Phelps/Maries County Health Department in Rolla. One local mini-grant was made under MFH’s Community Health and Prevention (CHP) funding program. The Council for a Healthy Dent County in Salem received $10,000. With funding, the organization is offering healthy cooking programs and providing residents with market vouchers for fresh produce.
The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Sunday, October 28th at 1:39 in the afternoon, 6 firefighters were dispatched to Highway W and Highway EE in Salem to provide manpower. All units were back in service at 2:27. On Thursday, November 1st at 7:00 in the evening, 10 firefighters were called for training at the Fire Department. All units were back in service at 10:00. On Friday, November 2nd at 1:21 in the afternoon, 8 firefighters were sent to the 1000 block of East Center to investigate a fire at the residence. All units were back in service at 1:42. On Saturday, November 3rd at 9:32 in the morning, 5 firefighters were dispatched to the 2100 block of Highway F for fire extinguishment. All units were back in service at 10:51. That same morning at 10:51, 6 firefighters were called to the 100 block of South Henderson to a multifamily dwelling for a shut down system. All units were back in service at 11:50. Later that afternoon at 1:20, 7 firefighters were dispatched to County Road 4255 to establish fire lines for wildfires. All units were back in service at 3:03. On Monday, November 5th at 11:46 in the morning, 3 firefighters were called to the 800 block of North Jackson for emergency medical services and mutual aid at the Salem Memorial District Hospital. All units were back in service at 12:10.

The Salem Tiger Benchwarmers will be hosting a Blue/White Night on Saturday at the Salem High School Gym. Doors open at 4:30. Events will include a chili supper and a bake sale. Starting at 5:00, the girl’s and boy’s basketball teams from 7th through 12th grade will be introduced and showing their skills. Bring water and/or sport drinks as your admission to the event. The Salem Tiger Benchwarmers is a Booster Club for the basketball teams. Booster Club t-shirts will also be available. Phil Pressey scored a game-high 21 points and the 14th ranked Missouri Tigers punished the Alcorn State Braves, 91-54, outscoring them by 30 points in the second half. Earnest Ross and Alex Oriakhi each posted double-doubles in the win for Missouri (2-0). Ross finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Oriakhi tallied 12 points and 10 boards for the Tigers, who will next play Nicholls State on Friday.
The St. Louis Cardinals have signed veteran catcher Rob Johnson to a minor league contract with Triple-A Memphis and extended him a non-roster invite to the team’s 2013 Spring Training camp. Johnson, 30, has compiled a .201 career batting mark in 245 games. The Cards also gave pitcher Kyle McClellan his unconditional release.

Funeral services for Cathy Leimkuehler (Coleman) of Leslie and formerly of Davisville, age 63, will be held today at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Cherryville Baptist Cemetery.
A Rosary service for Trudy Hammack of Rolla, age 92, will be held tonight at 5:30 at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla, followed by visitation until 8:00. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Otterville Mo. At 3:00 pm. Memorial are suggested to the St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
Funeral services for Norman E. Short will be held Thursday at 11:30 at the Macedonia Baptist Church near the Boss Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 3:00 to 8:00 at the Kutis Funeral Home located at 5255 Lemay Ferry Road in St. Louis. Visitation will also be held from 10:30 until service time at the Macedonia Baptist Church Thursday morning. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
