The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire at 4:29 Monday morning out Highway 19 North to County Road 448 at property owned by Casey Hemken and occupied by Marcel Dozier of Salem. Upon arrival, firefighters found a smoldering fire possibly caused by a heat lamp. With mutual aid from the Cherryville Fire Department, firefighters extinguished the fire. Damage is estimated at about $3,000. No injuries were reported and a total of four firefighters responded to the call.
An accident occurred at 1:58 Friday afternoon at the intersection of Highways 19 and 32/72. According to the Salem Police report, a tan 2005 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Sheila Conaway of Salem was traveling west from the Crossroads parking lot crossing Highway 19. Conaway did not see and made contact with a red 1994 Chevy driven by Carrie Clark of Salem traveling southbound on Highway 19. Clark suffered unknown injuries. Both vehicles sustained moderate damage.
An accident happened Monday afternoon at 5:52 in Maries County about seven miles north of Vichy on Highway 63 that involved two Salem residents. According to the highway patrol, a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by 66-year old Bobby Stephens of Salem, hydroplaned on the wet pavement, skidded off the left side of the roadway, then struck a sign. Overturned and came to rest on its top. Suffering minor injuries was Bobby Stephens and his wife, 71-year old Nancy Pfeiffer-Stephens. Both were taken by the Maries-Osage Ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Both were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident and the Ford was totaled in the accident. The Ford was removed from the scene by Beck Motors of Freeburg.
The 2007 Christmas Parade “It’s A Wonderful Life” will be held on Saturday, December 1st beginning at 5:30 pm. The parade will be from the old Fairgrounds to the Courthouse. Entry forms are available and must be turned in to the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce located in the Visitors Center at 200 South Main no later than Tuesday, November 27th. PLEASE…NO ATV’S or DIRT BIKES.
U. S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced that small businesses in the 30 Missouri counties named in the federal disaster declaration as a result of the severe drought are eligible for low-interest disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Drought conditions affect more than just our agricultural operations they also hit ag-related business very hard. These small businesses in our rural communities can now apply for disaster loans from SBA to offset the economic losses caused by the extremely difficult dry conditions. SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) of up to $1.5 million at a four percent interest rate are available to qualifying small businesses in counties in our area including: Crawford, Dent, Reynolds, Shannon and Texas county.
Senator Frank Barnitz announced that district legislative assistant Wilma Rowden of Vienna would continue her listening posts in November at locations throughout the 16th Senate District. Rowden will be in Rolla at the Phelps County Commissioners meeting on Thursday, November 15th from 9:00 to 11:00 am. The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks will be holding a blood drive in Salem today from 1:00 to 6:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem on West Third Street. Proof of identification is required for first time donors. In order to donate blood, you must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.
Work to replace the bridge over Beaver Creek on Route 63 in Phelps County, will begin Monday, November 12th. This project is located about 1.3 miles north of Route W on Route 63. The contract has been awarded to Magruder Construction Co. Inc. of Eolia at a total cost of $1,347,205.18. The contract calls for a wider bridge deck and improvements to the roadway leading up to the bridge as well as stream crossing improvements, which will improve safety. The Salem Fall Sports Athletic Banquet will be held Wednesday at 6:30 at the high school cafeteria. The sports to be saluted will be football, volleyball, cross-country and softball and the cheerleaders will also be honored.
DeMarre Carroll scored 23 points to lead the Missouri Tigers to an 87-76 win over the Central Michigan Chippewas in the opening round of the CBE Classic at Mizzou Arena. Leo Lyons also had a big night for the Tigers (1-0), scoring 18 points on 8- of-9 shooting from the floor. Keon Lawrence and Stefhon Hannah also chipped in with 10 points apiece.Missouri shot 51.6 percent from the field in the first half to take a 43-38 lead into the break. The Tigers kept the pressure on in the second half, converting 15-of-31 field goal attempts, while adding 13 points at the foul to capture the 11-point victory. Missouri dominated CMU in the paint, outscoring the Chippewas 44-30 in the post. With the win Missouri moves on to face Fordham in the next round of the tournament tonight starting at 6:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
The St. Louis Blues will face the Detroit Red Wings tonight starting at 7:00. The Blues have lost three in a row. KSMO Radio will join the game in progress after Missouri Basketball.
The NHL's second-leading scorer of all time, Mark Messier, highlighted the 2007 Hockey Hall of Fame class, which was inducted on Monday. Also inducted were players Ron Francis, and former Blues players Al MacInnis and Scott Stevens. NHL executive Jim Gregory was also voted in under the builder category. All four players were on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time.
Veteran left-hander Andy Pettitte was among seven players to file for free agency Monday. Last week, Pettitte chose to decline his $16 million option from the New York Yankees and he's reportedly been contemplating retirement. Also filing for free agency Monday was New York Mets first baseman Jeff Conine, Pittsburgh shortstop Cesar Izturis, Seattle outfielder Jose Guillen, Tampa Bay pitcher Al Reyes, and Texas pitcher Jamey Wright.

Funeral services for Lawrence M. Blair of Licking, age 82, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Fox Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Beulah Cemetery.
Memorial services for Jerry “Tiny” Dixon of St. James, formerly of Eminence, age 55, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 Saturday morning until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Dixon Family.
Memorial services for Laura B. Musgraves of Katy, Texas, formerly of Salem, age 87, will be held Saturday, at 1:00 at the Mt. Hermon Methodist Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
Interment for Dennis Lee Hensley of Salem, age 61, will be at a later date at the Hartshorn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
