The people of Dent County passed in 2006 a sales tax to promote tourism in the Dent County area and in 2013 calendar year; the Tourism Tax Commission has approved 14 proposals and budgeted $75,000 to fund those proposals. To date, the commission has already paid out over $60,000 of the budgeted funds. Some proposals are funded entirely and others are funded partially as determined by the commission. Some of the requests received in 2013 that were funded were the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce ads for the AAA Magazine, Missouri Life Magazine and July 4th fireworks event in the Farm magazine as well as the ad in the 2014 Missouri Guide and county tear off maps. The tax also helped pay for the billboards on Highway 44 and 63, the placards for the Salem Walking Tour and the quilt exhibit banner at the firehouse as requested by the Salem Area Community Betterment Association. Also being funded were advertisements for the Dent County Fall Festival, Current River Cruise-In, Rose Holland Trout Derby, the Timber Industry Expo at the Commons, the 100-Acre Wood Rally and more. The tourism tax is a 2% sales tax that is to be collected by motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts, cabins and campgrounds and then paid over to the Dent County Collector for the sole purpose of promoting tourism in Dent County. Most of the tax dollars collected are provided by out of town guests and put to good use to continue to promote special events as well as the beauty of our county.
