The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce announces the 2009 nominees for their Awards Banquet that will be held tonight at the Youth Building at The Commons. Nominees for this year's new categories include Business of the Year: Country Mart, Salem Memorial District Hospital and Wal-Mart; Small Business of the Year: Common Grounds, Flat Nasty Off Road Park and Phil-Mart; Customer Service Award: Coleen Cutchen with Common Grounds, Shawna Settles with My Place Restaurant and Angie Siers with Sonic Drive In; Business Visionary Award: Common Grounds, Salem Memorial District Hospital and the Salem R-80 School District; Individual Visionary Award: Stan Podorski with KSMO Radio, Kim Stephens with Salem Public Library and Carl Williams with Village Gallery and Common Grounds; and the Youth Visionary Award: Jessica Raulston, Matt Sirois and Dalton Smith. There will also be a live and silent auction to help raise funds for the chamber of commerce. The dinner will be prepared by Salem Catering. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving thefts. On Saturday, November 7^th at 10:56 am a telephone call came in from Greg Sansegrew from Dent County Road 4030 stating that two four wheelers and golf cart were stolen from his property. A person or persons unknown had also entered the cabin and their belongings had been gone through but nothing else was missing. Reported stolen were a 1998 EZ-Go golf cart valued at $1,500; a 1995 Yamaha Wolverine 350 4x4 ATV valued at $2,800 and 1991 Polaris 250 ATV valued at $1,000. On Sunday, November 8^th at 3:22 in the afternoon, a telephone call came in from Mrs. Edna Albert on Highway 19 South reporting that a person or persons unknown had broken into her residence. Upon arrival Deputy Rodney Lewis noticed that the concaved marks on the basement door made with some type of tool. A shovel found lying on the ground nearby and held against the door revealed the marks were made from the shovel. A gun safe embedded into the wall of the basement was noticed and it was obvious that someone tried to push the gun safe due to the smudged foot prints on the lower corners of the safe. Although nothing was found missing, Mr. Albert reported that a couple weeks earlier several firearms were stolen in a subsequent incident, which he did not report at the time. Reported taken were a Smith & Wesson K22 revolver valued at $100; a Davis 38-calibur 2-shot Derringer valued at $100; a Smith & Wesson 38-calibur 5-shot revolver valued at $250; and a Ruger 10-22 rifle w/bull barrel, scope and 25-rould clip valued at $300. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Sunday, November 1^st at 9:03 the District as paged out to the 1200 block of North Jackson to assist the Salem ambulance with a patient. For firefighters responded to the call. On Tuesday, November 3^rd at 4:57 in the afternoon, the District was paged out to Highway H and Highway 72 due to a heavy odor of propane in the area. After further investigation, the smell was due to the gas company burning off tanks. A total of seven firefighters responded to the call and had the scene under control at 5:11 pm. At 7:25 that evening, the District was paged out to Highway 32 East due a motor vehicle accident. A total of nine firefighters responded to the call and assisted the Salem ambulance with a female occupant. Then at 8:47 that same evening, the District was paged out to Highway 19 North to assist the Salem ambulance with a male patient. A total of seven firefighters responded to the call and had the scene under control at 9:08 pm.

A $150,000 donation from The Doe Run Company will be used to fund the foundation for a new mine building at the Experimental Mine site operated by the Department of Mining and Nuclear Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in Rolla. The foundation project, tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2010, will be the first of series of massive updates planned for the Experimental Mine site. The two-story, 7,500-square-foot mine building will include three laboratories, mine rescue and mucking stations, separate mine warehouses for men and women, three large classrooms, office space and a mining industry historic center. The Experimental Mine is one of only a few such mineral engineering facilities on a university campus. The mining engineering students use the Experimental Mine extensively to supplement their classroom studies with practical experience. Located on Bridge School Road, just west of Rolla about 1.5 miles from Missouri S&T, the 19-acre site features two underground mines and two small quarries. It is staffed by two full-time people, and a variety of mining equipment is available for instructional and research purposes.

The “Trees and Trains” exhibit at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center has become a tradition with an amazing display of Christmas Trees and model trains. This is one exhibit you won’t want to miss out on and you may even decide that you would like to decorate a tree for the display and that is artificial trees only. Setup will take place beginning Monday, November 16th and all trees must be in place before Tuesday, November 24th. The exhibit will run Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 1:00 pm from November 24th through December 24th. St. Louis Cardinals Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright became just the sixth battery to win Gold Glove Awards, and the first since Rick Reuschel and Tony Pena did so with Pittsburgh in 1985. Molina, who threw out 40.7 percent of would-be basestealers, took home his second straight Gold Glove behind the plate, while Wainwright won the award for the first time in his career, as he did not commit an error in 56 chances. Wainwright supplanted the retired Greg Maddux, who had won this award in 18 of the last 19 seasons, including the last five years.

The St. Louis Blues host Nashville tonight at the Scottrade Center starting at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a pair of roster moves Wednesday, placing veteran guard Mike Goff on injured reserve and signing linebacker Justin Rogers.
