The Salem Police Department released their reports involving shoplifting, a disturbance, an object being thrown from a vehicle, and a stolen auto. On November 6^th at 7:36 p.m. an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a report of shoplifting. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 31-year old Salem woman for shoplifting. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On November 8^th at 12:42 a.m. while on patrol, an officer observed a disturbance on the Wal-Mart parking lot. The investigation of the incident led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem woman who was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated. A 31-year old Salem man was also issued a summons to appear in court and he was released. On November 8^th at 9:14 p.m. while on patrol an officer observed an object being thrown from a vehicle. The vehicle was stopped and the investigation led to the arrest of a 24-year old Salem man for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and littering. He was released pending the issuance of a warrant. On November 9^th at 7:19 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Ozark Auto located at 1916 South Highway 19 in reference to a stolen auto. The investigation of the report revealed that between November 7^th at 6:00 p.m. and November 9^th at 7:00 p.m., a person or persosns unknown stole a maroon in color 1994 Ford Explorer from the lot. The theft is under investigation. Anyone with any information regarding the stolen auto is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report for the month of October. For the month there were 108 9-1-1- calls, of which all were responded to with 24 of the calls being prank calls. The Department served 164 papers consisting of 86 civil papers, 75 criminal papers and three notices to vacate, plus they served 21 felony warrants and nine misdemeanor warrants. During the month, there were six drug arrests and 20 domestic disturbance calls were addressed. The Sheriff’s Department issued 31 tickets, made two DWI arrests, conducted 72 traffic stops, aided on 17 ambulance assists and assisted on 16 traffic accidents. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department also conducted three death investigations. For the month of October, the Sheriff’s Department investigated five burglaries, five assaults, eight thefts, six property damage reports, four crimes against children, and one trespassing or property line dispute. The Department spent seven hours working in court, five hours testifying and 80 hours in training. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department handled a total of 191 calls during the month. In the Dent County Jail Report for October, there were 46 prisoners incarcerated for the month with an average daily total of 16. There three transfers to or from other departments and two transfers to a mental facility. During the month of October, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 14,364 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.

Due to numerous telephone calls received at Troop A Headquarters, the Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind the public of a telephone scam involving long distance telephone service theft. The victims of the scam receive a telephone call indicating a loved one has been seriously injured in an accident. The victims are then directed to dial “star (*) 72” followed by a telephone number to obtain further information. Star (*) 72 is a telephone company service that allows call forwarding. Dialing the number supplied by the caller allows the caller to have their call billed to the victim’s telephone number. This is not the procedure law enforcement agencies use to notify family members that a loved one has been injured or killed. Anyone who has been victim to this type of call should contact their telephone service provider to request credit for any fraudulently placed calls. 

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has referred the issue of an unauthorized road in the new Current River State Park in Shannon County to the Missouri Attorney General's Office. The issue in question concerns a road built recently by Shannon County road crews on an old trail from Highway 19 in Shannon County through the new Current River State Park, which is currently under development and closed to the public. The road was built without the department's permission and has damaged a number of natural resource features as well as created operational and park visitor security issues. The new state park is being built on land transferred earlier this year from the Missouri Department of Conservation to the Department of Natural Resources for development of the park. In addition to being built on private property without the department's permission, the road presents several resource damage issues. The commission apparently bulldozed an old trail to make it wider and more accessible and the trees that were uprooted were pushed to the side of the new road. The road, which is more than a mile long, travels about 200 feet down a steep hillside. This has created erosion gullies with resulting sediment that runs into a pristine stream and eventually the Current River, which is listed as an Outstanding National Resource Water. On the way down the valley, it passes through a fen in Jones Hollow. At one point, the streambed itself is used as the corridor for the road. The road also provides another access into the park, which creates many security issues. The road's location in close proximity to the planned special use camping area may threaten the area's use by Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and youth groups.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers defeated Missouri Southern in their final exhibition game of the year last night, 87-58. They will face Prairie View A&M Saturday in the regular season opener.

The St. Louis Blues will try to end their five game losing streak tonight as they will be at Buffalo to face the Sabres. The Blues are 1-3-1 on the road this year. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

San Francisco Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum has been named the 2008 National League Cy Young Award winner by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
