The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is trying something new this year during the “Trees and Trains” display to be held at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center beginning Friday, November 23^rd. “The Membership Tree” will consist of ornaments that depict each Chamber member as well as their business. Those ornaments need to be dropped of by no later than Tuesday, November 13^th.

An accident happened at 8:50 Friday night in Phelps County on Forest Road 1576 about six miles south of Newburg. According to the highway patrol report, the accident occurred as a 1994 Chevrolet Pickup driven by 33-year-old Travis Gooch of Newburg, failed to negotiate a curve. The Chevy ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Travis Gooch left the scene and charges are pending. Injured in the accident was a passenger, 21-year old Stephanie Hickman of Salem. She suffered from minor injuries and was taken to Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla, MO. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The 1994 Chevrolet Pickup sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by C & C towing of Rolla.

An accident happened at 4:10 Saturday afternoon in Dent County on Route AC about a mile south of Boss. According to the highway patrol report, a 92 Isuzu Rodeo driven by 46- year old Roger Brown of Boss was traveling south on Route AC when Brown lost control. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, overturned, and struck a fence before coming to rest. Roger Brown suffered from minor injuries and was taken by Iron County EMS to Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The 92 Isuzu Rodeo was totaled and removed from the scene by Abney’s towing of Viburnum.

For devoted anglers, November’s chilly winds bring the winter of their discontent. But Missouri’s four trout parks remain refuges for angling addicts long after other fishing holes ice over. The Missouri Department of Conservation provides fish for three trout parks operated by the Department of Natural Resources and for the James Foundation’s Maramec Spring Park near St. James. Winter fishing opportunities at state-owned trout parks have expanded in recent years and now include no-creel fishing from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm from Fridays through Mondays, now through February 11th. Anglers can get park-specific regulation pamphlets at each trout park that explains where fishing is allowed. The only permits required for catch-and-release fishing at trout parks are a fishing permit and a statewide trout permit. You can obtain the Missouri Trout Fishing guide, which is available by writing to the Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri Trout Fishing, P.O. The 2007 Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday at the Commons beginning at 6:30 pm. Tickets are available from any board member or at the Chamber office located in the Visitor’s Center at 200 South Main. Tickets are $20 and must be purchased by TODAY at noon. Entertainment will be provided by Jarred Brown and Vice President of the Chamber, Dustin Howard will be the emcee. This year’s nominees for Teen of the Year are; Jenna Homeyer, Katie Hunt and Ellie Nothaus, Citizen of the Year the nominees are; Ed Carmack, Bobbie Culver and Phil Newcom, and the nominees for Lifetime Achievement Award are; Jim and Diane Boulware, Meredith Craig and Jo Ann Wells.

The Salem Fall Sports Athletic Banquet will be held Wednesday at 6:30 at the high school cafeteria. The sports to be saluted will be football, volleyball, cross-country and softball and the cheerleaders will also be honored.

The St. Louis Blues dropped a 4-2 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks Friday night for their third loss in a row. They will be back in action Tuesday night against Detroit.

Marc Bulger threw for 302 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while running back Steven Jackson also added his first career score through the air as St. Louis held off a furious late rally to edge New Orleans, 37-29, earning its first win of the season. Bulger completed 27-of-33 passes and spread the ball around to seven different receivers for the Rams (1-8), who put a startling end to the worst start in franchise history, having surpassed the 0-6 beginning the 1962 Los Angeles- based club endured. They also ended the longest slide since the 1991-92 squad dropped 11 in a row.

Rookie Selvin Young rushed for a career- high 109 yards and a touchdown to lead the Denver Broncos to a 27-11 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Dwayne Bowe hauled in a career-high nine passes for 105 yards for the Chiefs (4-5), who have lost two straight. Damon Huard started behind center for Kansas City and struggled before being replaced by Brodie Croyle in the third quarter. Huard, who suffered a neck injury as well, was just 6-of-15 for 83 yards with two interceptions and a lost fumble that led to 14 points for Denver. Croyle went on to throw for 162 yards on 17-of-30 passing with an interception in the loss.

Chase Daniel threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Jeremy Maclin, while Tony Temple ran for 141 yards and a score as seventh-ranked Missouri held off Texas A&M, 40-26. Temple set the tone early with a 44-yard touchdown run in the first quarter while Maclin had an 82-yard TD in the second half and finished with five receptions for 146 yards for the Tigers, who reached the nine-win mark during the regular season for the just the fourth time in school history and the first time since 1969.

The Missouri Tiger Basketball team open their season tonight against Central Michigan at 6:30. You can hear the game on KSMO.

Funeral services for Glen Martin of Cherryville, age 76, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Martin Cemetery in Cherryville.

Memorial services for Jerry “Tiny” Dixon of St. James, formerly of Eminence, age 55, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 Saturday morning until service time.

Interment for Dennis Lee Hensley of Salem, age 61, will be at a later date at the Hartshorn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial services for Laura B. Musgraves of Katy, Texas, formerly of Salem, age 87, are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.
