The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. After approval of the agenda during public comments, Deloris Gray Wood, President of the Dent County Historical Society came in to speak with the Commission about a Sesquicentennial Ceremony to the held on Saturday, December 5th beginning at 2:00 pm at the Courthouse. The Dent County Historical Society will sponsor a Civil War Ceremony of the Battle of Salem. Kent Nichols will start and end the ceremony with the firing of his cannon on the courthouse lawn. There will be various presentations from dignitaries, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell will represent the southern part of Dent County, District Two Commissioner Gary Larson will represent the northern part of Dent County and Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles will represent the Dent County Courthouse. Everyone is invited to dress in blue and gray period dress and come and join the ceremony. Dent County Sheriff’s Deputy Wayne Becker brought in grant request for over $15,000 for the Deputy Sheriff’s Supplemental Salary Fund and Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles signed off on the grant. In the road reports, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Road 5610, and materials will be added and grading would be done on county roads 4080, 4100, and 6200. Purcell also said that one man would be working in the shop. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2150 and 3120, and materials would be added and then grading would be done on county roads 5320 and 5325. He also reported that two men would be working in the shop. Larson said that he attended the Council for a Healthy Dent County meeting and that Board is still short one member. Both district commissioners reported that they attended a meeting with school superintendents regarding the changes to snow routes for the upcoming year. The City of Salem Chief of Police Keith Steelman, City of Salem City Administrator Clayton Lucas and Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings came in to discuss with the Commission a city/county firing range development. The Commission agreed to work with the city on development of the project. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the sales tax revenue year-to-date is up $7,800 for both the General Revenue and the Law Enforcement accounts. Skiles attended the MRPC Board meeting in Vienna Thursday afternoon and the MRPC awards banquet Thursday night. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the Dent County Courthouse would be closed on Friday, November 11th in observance of Veterans Day. At the last meeting on Monday, the Commission discussed the health insurance deductible and all Commissioners agreed to leave the policy the same as last year. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held on Monday, November 14th beginning at 9:00 am at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

An increase in this year’s fall firearms turkey harvest could be the first concrete evidence that Missouri’s wild-turkey population is recovering. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Telecheck database shows that hunters checked 7,077 turkeys during the fall firearms turkey season in October. Juvenile turkeys made up 58.2 percent of the total, up from 55.5 percent last year. This year’s fall firearms turkey harvest is 1,150 more than last year, a 19.4 percent increase. This fall, Dent County recorded 121 total turkeys, with 11 adult gobblers, 30 adult hens, 26 juvenile gobblers, and 54 juvenile hens. Crawford County had 94 turkeys checked, with 13 adult gobblers, 16 adult hens, 24 juvenile gobblers, and 41 juvenile hens. Iron County recorded 47 turkeys, with 7 adult gobblers, 11 adult hens, 11 juvenile gobblers, and 18 juvenile hens. Phelps County checked 65 turkeys, with 4 adult gobblers, 21 adult hens, 12 juvenile gobblers, and 28 juvenile hens. Reynolds County recorded 33 turkeys, with 3 adult gobblers, 4 adult hens, 8 juvenile gobblers, and 18 juvenile hens. Texas County checked a total of 95 turkeys, with 12 adult gobblers, 20 adult hens, 21 juvenile gobblers, and 42 juvenile hens.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers had several players named to All SCA Conference Teams. Named to the All SCA First Team were infielder Samantha Parker, outfielder Kaytlyn Wells, and catcher Mackenzie Wulff. Making the All SCA Second Team was pitcher Cortney Putman. The All SCA Honorable Mention Team included infielder Sierra Hagler, outfielder Miranda Ferry, utility player Darian Grogan, and infielder Leah Whelan. 

The Blues will host the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday at 7:00. You can hear that game on KSMO.

The Missouri Tiger basketball team host SEMO tonight to open up the regular season. You can hear that game starting with the pre-game show on KSMO at 6:30.

The Missouri Tiger football team will host Texas Saturday morning. Pre-game show will get underway at 10:00 and you’ll be able to hear it on KSMO.

The St. Louis Rams will get their second chance at their second win of the year, as they’ll be in Cleveland on Sunday to face the Browns. The Kansas City Chiefs will be trying to bounce back from a tough loss to the then winless Dolphins, as they’ll be hosting the Denver Broncos Sunday. Both of those games start at noon.

Funeral services for Dianna L. Thomason of Salem, age 60, will be held today at 1:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:30 until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

Memorial services for Wade Lortz of Rolla, age 36, will be held tonight at 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the family of Wade Lortz.

Graveside service for Frieda Morrison of Salem, age 93, will be held Saturday at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem starting at 11:00. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel of Salem.

Funeral services for Louie Paul Marlow of Salem, age 90, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 until time of service. Interment will be Wednesday, November 16th at 12:00 with a Military graveside service at the Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster Mo. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice or Missouri Veterans Home in St. James.

Funeral services for Wayne A. Simmons of Grandview Mo, age 78 will be held Tuesday at 10:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery near Bunker with a Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the KC Hospice.

Funeral services for Mary ‘Mae’ Lacy of Steelville, age 97, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Steelville Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Fariview Cemetery in Butts, Missouri.

Memorial services for Barbara Caroline (Turner) Walters of Salem, age 91, will be held at a later date in Santa Monica, California. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.

Funeral services for Larry Beck of Rolla are incomplete at this time and are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
