In observance of today being Veteran’s Day, all government offices will be closed. The Post Office will not be delivering mail and all offices at the Dent County Courthouse and City Administrative Building will be closed as well.

The Meramec Regional Planning Commission recently held their 2009 Annual Dinner and also celebrated their 40^th year at the Havener Center in Rolla. Terry Bruno and Byron Burke from Lenox were honored for their community contributions and volunteer efforts. The Eugene E. Northern Award, the most prestigious award presented by the MRPC for community service and volunteerism, went to George A. Barnitz of Lake Spring. The Eugene E. Northern Award is named for Judge Northern who was a judge in the 25th Circuit Court who practiced law in Rolla and served as a city attorney for 20 years.

Dent County Prosecutor Brandi Baird filed charges late Monday afternoon against former Prosecutor Jessica Sparks from an incident that occurred Saturday morning in Dent County on Dent County Road 3193 at property owned by Bennie Maxwell. Sparks was charges with two Class C felonies of felonious restraint, two unclassified felonies for armed criminal action and a Class D felony for the unlawful use of a weapon. The incident happened Saturday when Sparks refused to let Carol Boyd and Kenneth Abshire leave the Maxwell property after Sparks had called Abshire and asked for help in moving from the property. Sparks accused Boyd of stealing her cell phone and sexually assaulting her. At that time, Sparks went to her truck and pulled out a small black gun. Boyd contacted the Sheriff’s Department and Deputy Scott Montoya arrived and handcuffed Sparks. Officers obtained consent to search the truck, but found nothing. They were denied consent to search the residence and later received a warrant to search the home at which time a black revolver was found loaded in the home. Sparks was transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office and remains in custody.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, theft, a leave without paying for fuel, assault, and two death investigations. On Friday, November 6^th at 6:30 p.m. an officer was dispatched to Stephens Steakhouse in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown driving a blue Dodge pickup backed into their fence and left the area. At 6:40 p.m. that evening, an officer was contacted in reference to the theft of money. The report revealed a 21-year old Salem man lost his wallet from his vehicle. The wallet was located in the 1200 block of Highway 32 East in the roadway and approximately $244 was stolen from the wallet.  Then at 11:15 p.m. that night, an officer was detailed to BP Convenience Store in reference to leaving without paying for fuel. The report revealed an unknown male pumped $10.16 of fuel in a white Oldsmobile and left the area without paying for the fuel. On Saturday, November 7^th at 12:45 a.m. an officer was dispatched to the area of Seventh and Henderson Streets in reference to an ambulance assist. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown had stabbed a 44-year old man from Florissant, Missouri. He was identified as Gregory Horn and was transported to the Salem Memorial Hospital and then transferred to St. Johns Hospital in Springfield. At 10:00 p.m. that evening, an officer was detailed to the 600 block of East Gibbs in reference to a golf cart left unattended in the back yard of a residence. The report revealed the golf cart was stolen from Grace Community Church located at 600 South Water. On Monday, November 9^th at 7:30 a.m. an officer was sent to the 1200 block of East Roosevelt in reference to a death investigation. The report revealed that 84-year old Betty Hibbert had passed of natural causes. At 8:30 a.m. the same morning, an officer was detailed to the 900 block of North McGrath Lane in reference to a death investigation. The report revealed that 75-year old Annabelle Nash had passed of natural causes. Anyone with information on the thefts, property damage or assault reports, which are still under investigation, is ask to contact the Salem Police at 729-4242.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving a peace disturbance. On Sunday, November 8^th at 2:21 in the afternoon, a call came in from county road 6620 and caller stated that he had been maced, struck by a vehicles and that the person was taking kitchen cabinets from the house there.  After interviewing everyone involved, it was determined that a man and his girlfriend were buying a house on county road 6620, and were making payments, but the landlord was not putting the money on the house and as a result the house went into foreclosure. The tenant was removing an island from the kitchen. Numerous members to the landlord’s family arrived on the scene and blocked the road to prevent the tenants from leaving. The tenant maced the reporting person but there was no evidence of the person being struck by a vehicle. One of the landlord’s sons became angry, took off his shirt and charged toward the tenant stating that he was dead. The son was handcuffed and put into a patrol car while the investigation continued. At 6:10 that evening, through contact in the department, there was a trooper investigating an assault that occurred on Highway VV at Highway AB in Texas County at 4:30 that afternoon. The tenant and his girlfriend had reported that the landlord’s relatives had blocked the road and that they were assaulted by several of the relatives. At 9:30, flooding of the Dent County jail was reported. Cell #3 stated that he started the shower and fell asleep. The water flowed into the dispatch area and the water was shut off.

The Salem Tiger 8^th grade Basketball Tigers lost to Willow Springs last night at the Houston Tournament by the score of 38-32.

David Perron recorded his first career hat trick to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 6-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Brad Boyes notched a goal and three assists while Andy McDonald and Erik Johnson also scored for the Blues, who ended their five game winless streak. The Blues will host Nashville on Thursday.
