The Salem Police Department has released several reports. On Wednesday, November 2^nd at 5:05 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of South Jackson Street in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took two garden statues valued at $40 from the yard of a residence. Later that evening at 9:25, an officer was contacted at the police station in reference property damage. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged the passenger side door glass on a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier that was parked in the 800 Block of East Hawkins. The value of the damage is approximately $100. At 9:59 that same evening, an officer was dispatched to the 600 block of North Henderson in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a Lasco portable heater valued at $200 from a residence. On Thursday, November 3^rd at 8:31 in the morning, an officer was contacted in reference to a City of Salem electric meter that had been tampered with. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown had modified an electric meter in order to steal electric on a residence in the 800 block of South Askins. The damaged to the meter was approximately $35. On Friday, November 4^th at 11:45 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the McDonalds restaurant in reference to a theft. The investigation led to the arrest of an 18-year old female of Salem for stealing approximately $715.09 from the cash drawer. She was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Saturday, November 5^th at 11:41 at night, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 600 block of South Askins in reference to a disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 20-year old female of Salem for disorderly conduct. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Mark Twain National Forest’s wild fires near Salem were declared contained as of 10:00 am Tuesday, November 8^th. Recent rain over the wild fires should result in complete control later this week, but due to heavy forest fuels, it will take awhile for the wild fires to be completely out and continual daily monitoring will continue. The two contract North Carolina firefighting crews left Monday, November 7^th and one Type 6 engine from Shawnee National Forest is still working with Mark Twain National Forest Salem Ranger District personnel to patrol the fire areas. Hunters participating in Missouri’s gun deer season starting Saturday, November 12^th, 2011 are advised to stay out of the wild fire areas because some of the trees and tree roots may have been damaged during the wild fires and may fall without warning. Hunters are asked to be careful with campfires and warming fires during the gun deer season. Mark Twain National Forest is the largest public land manager in Missouri with 1.5 million acres in 29 counties in southern and central Missouri. Mark Twain National Forest’s mission is to continue to restore Missouri’s great outdoors and maintain a healthy, working forest. Anyone who has information about how the suspected arson wild fires were started, are asked to contact Mark Twain National Forest Salem Ranger District Office at 573-729-6656 or the toll ree arson hotline at 1-800-392-1111.

Hunters age 6 through 15 checked 16,392 deer during the first weekend of Missouri’s youth deer hunt November 5^th and 6^th, a 13-percent increase from last year’s figure. Top harvest counties for the early portion of the youth hunt were Osage with 369 deer checked, Franklin with 331 and Howell with 316. Resource Scientist Jason Sumners with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) said the main reason for the harvest increase was the fact that the early youth season occurred a week later than usual. Missouri’s first youth hunt, held in 2001, was two days long and the harvest was 6,277. For the first seven years, the youth hunt consisted of a Saturday and Sunday before the main firearms deer season, and the harvest averaged around 10,000 deer. Starting with the 2008-2009 hunting season, MDC doubled the length of the youth season by adding a two-day late portion in January. For the past three seasons, the early youth harvest has averaged a little more than 13,000. This year’s early youth harvest is larger than the total youth harvest for any previous year. MDC recorded one firearms-related hunting incident during the early youth hunt. It did not involve a youth hunter, however. The father of a youth hunter fired at what he thought was a wounded deer and injured the youth hunter’s uncle.

The SCA Conference Teams were announced for football and the Salem Tigers had a number of players represented. Named to the All-SCA First Team were offense lineman Dylan Burke, defensive lineman Carson Sheppard, and defensive back Ben Adams. Making the All-SCA Second Team were offensive lineman Jade Wisdom, defensive end Tyler Wofford and linebacker Justin Moore. The SCA Honorable Mention Team included running backs Johnny Boyd and Sammy Ibrahim as well as defensive back Brady Floyd. Carson Sheppard was named the Lineman of the Year in the SCA. Congratulations Tigers!

Funeral services for Charles Ray Gibbs of Salem, age 71, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Edgar Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Gregory Allen Harrison of Salem, age 40, on tonight at 7:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5:00 until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

Funeral services for Dianna L. Thomason of Salem, age 60, will be held Friday at 1:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:30 until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

Memorial services for Wade Lortz of Rolla, age 36, will be held Friday night at 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until service time Friday night. Memorials may be made to the family of Wade Lortz.

Graveside service for Frieda Morrison of Salem, age 93, will be held Saturday at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem starting at 11:00. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel of Salem.

Funeral services for Louie Paul Marlow of Salem, age 90, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 until time of service. Interment will be Wednesday, November 16^th at 12:00 with a Military graveside service at the Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster Mo. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice or Missouri Veterans Home in St. James.
