At the 2010 Meramec Regional Planning Commission Banquet held on Tuesday evening, at the Linn State Technical College, over 200 citizens of the Meramec Region as well as members from the Missouri Department of Economic Development were in attendance to salute community volunteers. Four people from Salem and Dent County honored for their contributions during the 2009-2010 year. They include Jay Anderson for his work with the year-long Sesquicentennial celebration, the downtown walking tours and his continued effort in compiling the history of Dent County; Jim and Diane Boulware for their work with the Salvation Army, Agape Home, Senior Center and Friday Night Music; and Lane Howard was a youth recipient for his extensive work and achievements in 4-H and FFA. The Eugene E. Northern Award was presented to John A. Klebba of Linn, MO for his community work in Osage County and Linn. Congratulations to all the award winners from all the counties for their volunteer efforts in making the Meramec Region a better place to live.

An accident occurred at 8:15 Tuesday morning in Crawford County on Highway 19 about five miles south of Cuba. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by 45-year old Richard White of Salem was traveling southbound on Highway 19 slowing for traffic and was struck from behind by a 1995 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by 52-year old Carl Smith of Salem. White suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla by ambulance. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Peterbilt sustained moderate damage and was driven by from the scene. The Volvo sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Miles and Sons Towing.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 2nd. After approval of the agenda, minutes were reviewed with no changes. Bills were paid and the 2011 budget was discussed in great detail. The calendar was then reviewed and approved. There were a total of 22 calls for October consisting of two calls for structure fires, three calls for brush fires, two landing zones were created, seven ambulance assists calls, three calls for motor vehicles, two calls for mutual aid, one call for a search and rescue and there was one meeting and one training session during the month. In old business, the station inventory is still in progress; roof repair is in the works, of which part has been completed. The strategic planning update was tabled until after the first of the year. In regards to the annual audit, a motion was made to hire Verkamp and Malone LLC to complete the audit. The Board then voted to go into closed session to discuss personnel. The regular meeting was then opened back up and in new business, the Board evaluated salary distribution for Dent County, payroll summaries for 2009/2010 were projected. After discussion, a motion was made to increase Chief Brad Nash’s pay by 3 percent, which failed by a 3 “no” to 2 “yes” vote. After more discussion was held, a motion was made to increase the salary by 2.5 percent and passed with 3 “yes” to 2 “no” vote. A revision of the minutes was discussed to be in outline form to make it easier to read and the Board approved. Chief Nash reported that it is time for the trucks to be serviced and asked the Board to have two engines serviced in Springfield and St. Louis, as they need to have special items checked and the Board agreed. Nash then reported that the garage doors are installed and in operation. Nash also informed the Board that he would be furthering his education by taking classes and it might affect Board meetings. The Board asked if Nash could have a representative to appear at the meetings. The Board then set their next monthly meeting for Tuesday, December 7th at the fire station at 6:00 pm. The meeting was then adjourned.

Central Missouri organizations interested in improving health care in their communities are invited to an upcoming meeting hosted by the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH).  The meeting is an excellent opportunity for attendees to hear about MFH funding available in 2011, and to learn more about the foundation, which awards a total of $40 million to $50 million in grants each year to nonprofits working toward better health for Missourians. The meeting will be held on Friday, November 19th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at The Centre located at 1200 North Holloway in Rolla. The meeting is free and designed for nonprofits focusing on community action and health care.  Community service clubs, other human service providers and community leaders also are welcome to attend.  Refreshments will be provided. Currently, MFH funds grants that provide operational support and address specific health issues including tobacco use, obesity, mental health and substance abuse, health literacy, primary care and women's health. The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind the public that driver examination station throughout the state would be closed in observance of Veteran’s Day on Thursday, November 11th. Normal operations will resume on Friday, November 12th.

Funeral services for Arvilla “Billie” Parker of High Ridge, Missouri, formerly of Boss, age 84, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Boss Assembly of God Church.

Funeral services for Hazel Lorene Spencer of Rolla, age 76 will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be at the Upper Davis Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Upper Davis Cemetery.

Funeral services for Samuel Elvin Tripp of Salem, age 82, will be held Friday at NOON at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Flatwoods Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Flatwoods Cemetery.

Funeral services for Irene M. Turner of Salem, age 85, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery in Dent County. Memorials are suggested to the Stone Hill Cemetery.

A funeral mass for Margaret “Maggie” Monachesi of Licking, age 96, will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 at the St. John Catholic Church in Licking. Visitation will be held from 9:00 until 10:30 Saturday morning. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the St. John Catholic Church in Licking or the Licking Residential Fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Memorial services for Charles “Chuck” Owen Medley, formerly of Dent County, age 77, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Grace Community Church with Pastor Mickey Davis officiating, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Charles Medley Memorial Fund c/o Ozarks Chapel United Methodist Church or the Old Soldier’s Home in Warrensburg or the VA Hospital in Columbia.
