The Dent County Commission met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4070, 4080, 5400, 6480, 6485 and 6500. He added that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 5610 and brown rock would be hauled in from the creek. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 3330 and 5300; and materials would be added and grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2370 and 5335. Larson went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2540 and the brown rock will be hauled in from the creek. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended the Public Transit Planning Meeting on Tuesday at the MRPC to discuss transportation needs and that he presided over two Public Housing Authority cases. Leona Walker attended the meeting and had some issues with her tax bill that had items on it that she did not own for the second year in a row. Ray Turner also attended the meeting and asked if Dent County Road 2230 was a public or private road and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that it is a county road up to the gate at the Fulton property. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that over 71% of registered voters voted in the General Election and that things went very smooth. She and the commissioners wanted to thank the 50 poll workers for the efforts during the election. She also said that the courthouse would be closed on Monday for Veteran’s Day. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams came in and said that the sales tax received in November from the state of Missouri came in $4,057.16 less than last November. For the year, Dent County is up $30,058.25 in sales tax collections over last year. The Commissioners agreed to purchase a used 4X4 pickup truck from the mid 90’s to early 2000’s. Bids received on the truck will be opened at 10:00 AM on Thursday, November 29th. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock brought in his scheduled extended hours for people to make their tax payments. His office will have extended hours on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, December 26th through the 28th, until 5:30. His office will also be open until 5:30 on Monday, December 31st. The collectors’ office will also be open on two Saturdays in December: the 1st and the 15th from 8:00 until noon for the convenience of the people who can’t make it in during the week. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be next Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
Republican Representative Jason Smith of Salem was selected by his colleagues in the House Majority Caucus to serve as Speaker Pro Tem for the 97th General Assembly. Smith currently serves as Majority Whip for the 96th General Assembly. When the legislature convenes in January for the 2013 legislative session, a full vote of all House members will confirm Smith’s role as Speaker Pro Tem. Smith will succeed Speaker Pro Tem Shane Schoeller who is leaving after serving two years as Speaker Pro Tem. Smith says, "This is a great honor and a responsibility I will take very seriously as I work with the leadership team to make our great state even better. I’m thrilled by the support my colleagues have trusted in me and so thankful for their willingness to allow me to serve as Speaker Pro Tem.” The Speaker Pro Tem presides over the floor debate in the absence of the Speaker of the House. This is the second highest ranking position in the Missouri House of Representatives. In addition, the Speaker Pro Tem is an ex-officio member of all House committees and is an integral member of the leadership team. Of notable mention, Smith is the youngest to serve in this position within the last one hundred years or more. In addition, he will be the first person from his region to ever earn the level of Speaker Pro Tem. The 97th General Assembly will convene for the 2013 legislative session on Wednesday, January 9.
The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their meeting on Tuesday. After approval of the agenda, financial statements were reviewed. A motion was made and carried to invest $30,000 for the 2013 year. The reimbursement report for October showed a total of 19 calls came in for October, which then brought the total number of calls thus far for the year to 286. The calls for October consisted of three calls for structure fires, two calls for landing zones, two first responder calls, two motor vehicle calls, three calls for Mutual Aid, one fire alarm call, one storm spotter call, one call for a meeting and one call for training. Chief Brad Nash then reported on the Royal Oak fire and stated that a total of 10 departments were involved. The board then set their next meeting for December 4th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm and the meeting was the adjourned.

Louisville Slugger announced on Thursday that Kansas City Royal Billy Butler won the 2012 Silver Slugger Award at DH in the American League. This is the first time that Butler has won the award, hitting .315 with 23 home runs.
The Missouri Tiger football team will face the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday. Missouri is 4-5 on the year and kick off is set for 11:00. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio.
The Missouri Tiger basketball team will open up the regular season Saturday afternoon at 4:00 when they host SIUE. You can hear it on KSMO.
The St. Louis Rams will be in San Francisco on Sunday to face the 49ers at 3:25. St. Louis is 3-5 on the year and in last place in the NFC West.
