The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, both commissioners wanted to let the public know that conditions are very dry and any grading done unless some rain is received will not last very long before the road becomes rough again. Also grading dry roads takes it toll on the grader blades. Once the area receives rain, extensive grading will resume. District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that some grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 6570, 6575 and 6590. He said that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 4210 and 5590, and two trucks will be hauling brown rock. Purcell said that another worker would be helping with the work on the county road and bridge department building. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 2083 and 3160, and that the part is in and repair work will be done on Brush Cutter #4. Larson stated that brown rock is going to be stockpiled, some grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 4260, and that another worker would be helping on the building project. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that people should refrain from doing any outdoor burning at this time due to the extremely dry and windy conditions. He said that the MRPC Annual Awards Dinner would be held tonight at Linn State Tech and Dent County will be well represented. Skiles reported that Stacey Stockstill from the Public Defender’s Office said that he is looking at some different options to increase space for their office and hopes to have another proposal to the commission to review. Skiles said that the courthouse would be closed Thursday for Veteran’s Day and the next commissioner’s meeting would be Monday, November 15^th at 9:00. At the budget hearing to amend the Tourism Tax Budget for 2010 held Monday, the commissioners unanimously approved an increase of $15,000 in expenses in the Tourism Tax budget and that would leave an ending balance in that fund of $81,279.46. The commissioners then went into closed session to meet with the state auditors to discuss their findings in the county audit.

The University of Missouri Extension announced Monday plans to conclude its partnership with all TCRCs in the state of Missouri, including Salem, by November 8, 2011. The Salem TCRC is an educational center associated with the University of Missouri Extension’s TeleCenter Network. The Salem TCRC is located in the Salem Freedom Activity Center and was established through a Memorandum of Agreement in February 2000. Since opening in the fall of 2000, Salem TCRC programs and events have numbered nearly 2,400 with over 22,000 participants. Current funding for Salem TCRC’s $260,621 operating budget includes a combination of participant fees (12.2%), local partner contributions (43.1%), University of Missouri Extension partner contribution (40.9%) and gifts and grants (3.5%). Salem TCRC Coordinator Ray Walden voiced appreciation for the local community support of the Salem TCRC, including the following local partner organizations: Bank of Salem, City of Salem, Salem Memorial District Hospital, Salem R-80 School District, Town and Country Bank, and U.S. Foodservice. Walden reported plans to meet with the local partners to discuss possible alternatives for continuing offering programs and services to the community within available resources. Other TeleCenters are located in Mexico, Jefferson City, Nevada, Kirksville, Poplar Bluff, Portageville, Reeds Spring and Mineral Area. More than 30 school districts, businesses, cities, educational institutions and other entities have served as partners with MU Extension in supporting the TeleCenters. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) reminds Missouri landowners that sign-up deadlines are quickly approaching for two popular programs that offer financial and technical assistance. Although people may sign up for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) at any time, only those people who sign up by November 19 will be eligible for the next round of funding, says State Conservationist J.R. Flores. EQIP promotes agricultural production and environmental quality. Through EQIP, farmers and ranchers receive financial and technical assistance to help install structural conservation practices and to implement management systems that promote conservation. WHIP enhances habitat on eligible land for upland and wetland wildlife, threatened and endangered species, and other types of wildlife identified as rare or declining species. Many types of land, including grassland, woodland, wetlands, stream and riparian areas, agricultural land and non-agricultural land may be eligible for WHIP funds. Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson has reportedly inked a five-year contract extension that could be worth just over $34 million. Johnson, a Texas product, was set to be an unrestricted free agent last offseason before free agency was changed due to the issues with the collective bargaining agreement. Instead, Johnson signed a restricted free agent tender that kept him with the Chiefs for this season. In his sixth year with the Chiefs, Johnson has 65 tackles, three forced fumbles, an interception and a touchdown this season, helping Kansas City to a 5-4 record, which is currently atop the AFC West.

St. Louis Blues netminder Jaroslav Halak took home the Third Star of the NHL weekly honors after allowing only one goal on 59 shots in two starts. The Slovakian has posted an 8-1-1 record with a 1.46 goals-against average, .944 save percentage and three shutouts this season.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips was fired just one day after a dismal 45-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has been promoted to head coach on an interim basis.
