Thursday night at the MRPC Annual Awards Dinner in Sullivan, Libby Sanders of Salem was presented the Eugene E. Northern Award, the highest Award for volunteerism as well as community dedication and commitment that the MRPC can bestow on anyone. Sanders, who is a retired Salem R-80 teacher, is the volunteer coordinator at the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History and has served in that capacity since its inception back in 1989. Libby is an accomplished folk musician and accomplished storyteller. She still is a faculty member of Southwest Baptist University and is well know for her favorite life skill motto, “Be kind - for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.” Sanders also served as the First Steps provider for Dent County which was a state and federally funded early intervention program for exceptional children and special needs children. She continues to be a member of numerous organizations including serving on the Board of Trustees of the Bonebrake-McMurtrey Foundation, the volunteer executive director of the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History, member of the Salem Area Arts Council, member of the Association of Missouri Interpreters, member of the Local Interagency Coordinating Council for First Steps, co-chair of the Regional Interagency Coordinating Council for Region 9 of First Steps and alternate for the State Interagency Coordinating Council. Also at the MRPC meeting Thursday night, Erin Hamby of Salem was recognized as an outstanding youth volunteer in the Dent County area. Erin is an active member of the FFA and held numerous office positions and won public speaking awards with the organization. She is involved with the National Honor Society, is a youth board member with the Salem Area Community Betterment Association and participates with Business Leaders of America, Salem High Spanish Club, Salvation Army, Salem High Drama Club and Student Council. In October, Hamby was honored with a 2007 Governor’s Leadership Award through the Missouri Community Betterment Association for her work with SACBA. Hamby is now attending college at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Congratulations Erin and Libby!!
The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that conditions in the district are still too dry for grading, so crew-members would be catching up on routine maintenance and hauling rock to the crusher. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Road 251 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 220. Tune also said that gravel would be hauled to the Huzzah Creek area and rock would be hauled to the crusher. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending the MRPC Board meeting Thursday in Sullivan and the annual MRPC Awards Banquet. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that next Wednesday she would be attending a South Central County Clerks Meeting and she also wanted to remind everyone that the courthouse would be closed Monday in observance of Veterans Day. Also at the meeting, the Commission voted to renew the counties health insurance policy with Cox Health through Gallagher Benefit Services. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving statutory rape and sodomy. On November 5th at 10:00, a Dent County Deputy received information concerning a 16-year old female and a 35-year old male involved in a sexual relationship. Information received led to the collection of various items of evidence. On November 5th at 1:16 in the afternoon, a 35-year old male was interviewed at the Dent County Sheriff’s Department concerning the reported incident. As a result of the interview and investigation, 35-year old Greg D. Smith of Salem was taken into custody and a warrant was requested. On November 6th a warrant was issued with six charges of statutory sodomy in the 2nd degree, and five charges of statutory rape in the 2nd degree. Bond is set at $80,000.
On Wednesday, November 7th at 1:50 in the afternoon, while on routine patrol a Dent County Sheriff’s deputy received a vehicle description concerning a male subject driving a vehicle and the deputy had knowledge of there being an active warrant on the subject. The deputy requested assistance and other units responded to the area. A responding deputy identified the vehicle and the wanted subject was driving. The vehicle was stopped and a 25-year old male was taken into custody on an active probation warrant. Other units responded and the vehicle was searched. The search produced two containers of alcohol beverages and a silver colored grinder with remnants of a roach and plant matter, and two packages of rolling papers. Further investigation led to a summons being issued to the 25-year old male for failure to register a motor vehicle annually and operating a motor vehicle while drivers license suspended. A 19-year old female passenger was issued a summons for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and a minor in possession of intoxicating liquor.

The St. Louis Blues will be on the road as they travel to Chicago to face the Blackhawks in their only game of the week. You can hear the game tonight on KSMO Radio at 7:30. The Blues have lost their last two games and are 7-6 on the year.
The Colorado Avalanche acquired goaltender Jason Bacashihua from the St. Louis Blues on Thursday in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2008 Entry Draft. Bacashihua appeared in 19 games last season for the Blues and posted a 3.15 goals-against average and .896 save percentage.
The Missouri Football Tigers face Texas A&M tomorrow at 11:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio. Missouri is 8-1 on the year.
Kansas City running back Larry Johnson will likely not play against division rival Denver on Sunday after the Chiefs released a statement Thursday on the condition of his right foot. The two-time Pro Bowl back injured his right foot on a fourth-quarter play in last Sunday's game against Green Bay.
The St. Louis Rams will try to get their first win of the year as they will face the New Orleans Saints Sunday. The Saints have won four straight games.

Interment for Dennis Lee Hensley of Salem, age 61, will be at a later date at the Hartshorn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
Graveside services for John R. Klinedinst of Rolla, age 56, will be held Saturday 2:00 at the Ozark Memorial Garden in Rolla. Visitation will be held prior to service from 12:00 to 1:45 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. There will be full military honors held at the graveside.
