Fair weather helped participants in the Early Youth Portion of Missouri’s Firearms Deer Season post the second-largest harvest on record. Hunters ages 6 through 15 checked 18,676 deer during the hunt November 2^nd and 3^rd. Top counties for the early youth hunt were Franklin with 424, Osage with 421, and Howell with 409 deer checked. Now in its 13^th year, the youth season is developing its own traditions as experienced hunters discover the rewards of mentoring youths during a season set aside especially for that purpose. When Missouri held its first youth hunt in 2001, the Show-Me State had approximately 40,000 deer hunters under age 16. By 2012 they numbered more than 70,000. Youth seasons are one facet of ongoing efforts to recruit new hunters. The Conservation Department also uses low-cost permits, partnerships with private mentoring programs, an Apprentice Hunter Authorization, and outdoor-skills training to encourage Missourians to take up hunting. Missouri’s $17 Resident Firearms Any-Deer Permit is a bargain compared to the average of $46.63 for equivalent privileges in surrounding states. Missouri charges only $8.50 for a resident any-deer permit for hunters under age 16. Resident youths pay just $3.50 for antlerless-deer permits. The Apprentice Hunter Authorization costs $10 per year and allows people 16 and older to buy hunting permits for two years without having to complete hunter-education training first. Authorization users must buy the appropriate hunting permits. They also must hunt in the immediate presence of a properly licensed hunter 18 years or older who is hunter-education certified or exempt from the hunter-education requirement due to age. Missouri’s hunting tradition is essential to managing the state’s deer herd. It also contributes substantially to the state’s economy. Deer hunters spend approximately $700 million on their sport annually in Missouri, generating $1.1 billion in business activity and supporting 11,000 jobs. Next on Missouri’s deer-hunting calendar is the November portion of firearms deer season Nov. 16 through 26. This portion normally accounts for approximately 80 percent of the state’s firearms deer harvest.

An accident occurred on Thursday, October 24^th at 1:43 in the afternoon on a private road behind the Salem High School. According to the Salem Police report, Ronald Carrico of Mascoutah, Illinois was driving a 2005 Freightliner under low hanging wires and made contact with the wires. The pole and wires sustained extensive damage, but no injuries were reported.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their November meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from their previous meeting, the Board reviewed a financial report and for the 2013 budget the department has spent 67% of the total budget compared to 83.7% for the same time period in 2012. In the monthly reimbursement report there was a total of 23 calls for the month of October. Calls included: three structure fires, one brush fire, two car fires, three landing zones, five first responders, four vehicle accidents, two mutual aid, one haz-mat, one for a meeting and one for training. The total calls-to-date is 282. Chief Brad Nash also reported that there were 186 fire call man-hours and 52 for training. In new business, the Board discussed purchasing new turnout gear and getting a rotation started. Nash stated that he would like to purchase six sets of turnout gear at $1,660 per set and also stated that the department is in need of two Thermal Cameras at $4,800 each for a total of $19,560. The cameras allow firefighter safety in the fact that they can locate hot spots in walls that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Currently the department has to borrow thermal imaging from Rolla Fire. After a Board discussion, a motion was made and carried for all, to use insurance money received from a truck wreck to purchase six sets of turnout gear and one thermal camera and then use the remaining money going toward parking lot repair. Chief Nash reported that the department has settled with the insurance company on the Haz-Mat accident for a total sum of $20,606 and the check has been received. The Board then set their December meeting for December 3^rd at the fire station beginning at 6:00 and the meeting was then adjourned.
