The 2007 Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday, November 15
th at the Commons beginning at 6:30 pm. Tickets are available from any board member or at the Chamber office located in the Visitor’s Center at 200 South Main. Tickets are $20 and must be purchased by Monday, November 12
th at noon. Entertainment will be provided by Jarred Brown and Vice President of the Chamber, Dustin Howard will be the emcee. This year’s nominees for Teen of the Year are Jenna Homeyer, Katie Hunt and Ellie Nothaus; for the Citizen of the Year, the nominees are Ed Carmack, Bobbie Culver and Phil Newcom; and the nominees for the Lifetime Achievement Award are Jim and Diane Boulware, Meredith Craig and Jo Ann Wells.
The Salem Junior Varsity Quiz Bowl kept the First Place Trophy home in Salem at the annual Salem Quiz Bowl Tournament. This was the first competition for Salem and for many of the teams attending. While Salem Varsity did not advance to the afternoon finals, the Salem Junior Varsity did advance and took First Place. Two Salem players medalled as Matt Prince took the third place medal and Zach Moser took the eighth place medal home. The Salem Varsity Quiz Bowl members are: Juliana Bermudez, Angie Gee, Megan Greenshields, Jenna Homeyer, Zach Moser, Sarah Reeves and Cricket Stroburg. The Salem Junior Varsity Quiz Bowl members are: Alex Bay, Caety Brantley, Brett Capps, James Fredericks, Seth Gott, Ashley Greenshields, Bret Hagler, Lane Howard, Chris Jimerson, Phillip Moser, Cody Nickles, Matthew Prince, Lena Sherrill, Rebecca Soard, and Kayce Webber. The Salem Quiz Bowl teams are coached by Susan Sheeley and Wanda Nickles.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving traffic stops. On October 26th at 3:50 in the afternoon, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of an 18-year old O’Fallon, Illinois, male for possession of marijuana. He was released with a date to appear in court after posting bond. At 5:24 the same day, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 17-year old St. Peters female for possession of marijuana. She was released with a date to appear in court after posting bond. Then at 8:06 the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of an 18-year old St. Charles male on a fugitive warrant from the St. Charles County Department of Corrections. He was incarcerated pending extradition from St. Charles County. At 11:12 that night, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 20-year old Brumley male and a 17-year old Ulman male for minors in possession of intoxicants, and a 21-year old Brumley female and a 17-year old Ulman male for possession of marijuana. They were released with a date to appear in court after posting bond. On October 27th at 7:06 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 30-year old Maryland Heights male on warrants from Jefferson County and the St. Charles County Department of Corrections. He was unable to post bond and was incarcerated pending extradition. Later the same evening at 10:37, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 17-year old and a 16-year old male juveniles, both of Arnold, for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The 17-year old was given a date to appear in court and released on bond. The juvenile was released to his parents and the report will be referred to the juvenile officer.
Last night at the Salem City Hall Auditorium, a small crowd of about 25 showed up to hear more about rural addressing in Dent County. Susan Cunningham of Spatial Data Research described exactly what they would be doing. The rural addressing will provide a physical address for each rural resident and business, develop GIS data for addressing to help with map production and emergency location, and develop all addressing in conjunction with the US Postal Service and 9-1-1. This change in addressing will allow for faster emergency response time, make getting deliveries easier, plus will help residents in obtaining passports, driver’s licenses and gun permits. Cunningham said that Dent County has chosen to go with the Equal Interval Addressing System where addresses are based on the measured distance along the road with 1000 addresses being assigned for each mile of road. Even numbers will fall on south and east sides of the road while north and west numbers will be odd. Your house number will tell emergency responders how far down the road your driveway is so they can find you. She said the country roads will be four digits and the private roads will be three digits, and all state highways will be indicated in the address as a state highway. Currently Spatial Data Research is mapping all structures using GPS technology and a homeowner interview where needed. The personal information they received can only be used for addressing so they can determine what fire district, school district and ambulance district you live in. They will then develop digital map layers and assign addresses to the properties, submit the addresses to the US Postal Service for conversion, and once the change occurs, notify each resident by mail of their new address. Residents will have at least one year of mail forwarding from their old address after the change occurs which is expected sometime in the late spring. Residents are then being asked to put their new house numbers on their home, as well as on their mailbox or at their driveway. Cunningham said that another public meeting would be held in the spring to inform citizens of the address changes.

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson is expected to return to the team's lineup on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Jackson has been struggling with back spasms that forced him to leave the team's 27-20 loss to the Cleveland Browns on October 28. The Rams had a bye this past weekend.
Third baseman and reigning World Series MVP Mike Lowell highlighted a group of six players that filed for free agency on Tuesday. Lowell hit a career-best .324 for the Boston Red Sox in 2007, clubbing 21 homers and driving in a career-high 120 runs. His Red Sox teammate Mike Timlin, a power arm out of the bullpen, along with fellow reliever Octavio Dotel of Atlanta, Colorado relief pitcher Matt Herges, New York Mets second baseman Jose Valentin and Seattle right-hander Chris Reitsma also filed on Tuesday.

Funeral services for Jerry Dale Howard of Piedmont, MO, age 56, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Ellington. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 this evening. Interment will be in the Mann Cemetery in Annapolis, Missouri.
Funeral services for Louise Mc Daniel of St. James, age 89, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
Funeral services for July Marie Setzer of Salem, age 55, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Seller Cemetery in Dillard.
Interment for Dennis Lee Hensley of Salem, age 61, will be at a later date at the Hartshorn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
